Chapter 18:

La-La Land, part 3

Watch Over You

Misako and I had found a park bench under a shade of trees not too far away. We had resolved to sit down so that I could continue my research on finding the taxi company. A few children played on the swing set and in the sand as we rested. Parents and onlookers watched the children with careful eyes. I noticed that others were looking at me and Misako for a reason not known to me. Then, I caught on as to why. I had only realized afterwards that I did not set Misako down on the bench, rather, she was atop my lap, and we still held each other. She did not utter a word to me, so I did not know my mistake.

“Sorry Misako, I didn’t put you on the-” I began.

“It’s okay, don’t say anything.” She interjected.

She kept her hold on my neck and shirt. She did not want me to let her down.

“No luck finding your chair.” I said to her.

“It’s fine, I will most probably have to get another.” She said…dejected.

“I won’t let that happen, Misako. I will find it.”

She took a moment to herself. She wanted to believe me, but she knew our search was fruitless. Misako then flicked my ear with her finger, and I jumped back.

“You keep saying it…” She muttered to me.

“Saying what?” I asked.

“My first name, Misako.”

“Oh. I didn’t mean to, Ishiha-”

She placed her head in my chest, I fell silent like a newborn.

“It’s fine. It’s only fair, since I call you by your first name.” Misako commented.

My heart began swimming marathons in my chest. I had to take breathers to qualm myself. She was kind, even through a terrible situation, she was kind. I felt my hand hold her tight around her waist.

“Misako, you have not ruined this day. In fact, you made it more fun.” I said to her after a moment of peace.

“You are the one who carried me.” She responded.

“Then, we made it fun.”

She nodded as she buried herself deeper in my chest.

“It’s sooo embarrassing though.” She chirped.

“It is. If Hiroshi found out…” I began, then my thoughts caught up with me. “Hiroshi!” I yelled.

“W-what?” Misako blurted.

I immediately took out my cell phone, searching for Hiroshi’s number. With a press of a button, I dialled him.

‘ring.’

‘ring.’

‘ring.’

‘fwip.’

“WHAT’S UP PAL?” Hiroshi yelled on the other line.

He picked up, my heart calmed itself. I needed him more than ever.

“Why are you yelling?” I asked.

“WE ARE AT THE ARCADE, IT’S LOUD IN HERE.” He replied.

“Well, I need you.”

“WHAT? I CAN’T HEAR YOU.”

“I need your HELP! We are at a park in Akihabara.” I yelled.

I could hear Hiroshi gasp on his end of the call. Then he spoke to Yuta beside him. Without another second passing, Hiroshi hung up the phone call. Misako looked at me with her violet eyes as I put my phone away.

“Why call him?” She asked.

“You’ll see.” I replied.

Fine whole minutes passed, then, in the distance, the children playing with one another had all begun screaming. Their parents and guardians panicked and pulled them to safety, from a monstrous duo. There they were, the demons of Tokyo. Yuta, with his signature special agent sunglasses, was atop Hiroshi’s shoulders. Yuta was equipped with two toy-guns in each hand. He sprayed gel-bullets like a madman as he yelled like a demon from the pits of hell. Hiroshi laughed manically as they drove-by-shot parents and children alike.

“DAAAAVIDDDDD! I’VE COME FOR YOUUUUU.” Hiroshi squealed.

“Twarget found.” Yuta said in a fake-deep voice.

The bystanders at the park all scattered, leaving us alone in a massive park. Yuta had a proud “mission accomplished” look on his face. Hiroshi had sweat pouring down his face as he tried to catch his breath. I explained our predicament to Hiroshi, asking if he knew the taxi company name.

“You should have come to me sooner.” Hiroshi said, “My dad owns most of the Taxi companies in and around Tokyo. I know the company you speak of good sir.”

Without a second to waste, Hiroshi dialled a number on his cell phone. Hiroshi proceeded to walk a distance away from us as he spoke on the phone with someone. After he ended the call, he walked back towards us.

“Done.” Hiroshi gloated.

Not even ten minutes transpired when the exact car and driver arrived on the sidewalk of the park. The driver had driven like his life was on the line. I was afraid to discover the truth behind that thought. The driver grovelled before us, begging for forgiveness and his dire mistake. I pleaded for him to get up, stating that it was an honest mistake.

“Mistwakes should be pwunished…by dweaf.” Yuta said as he cocked his toy gun.

The wheelchair was returned to us, in Yuta’s words: Mission complete.

“Hey Hiroshi, thank you.” I said to him with a hand on his shoulder.

I was truly grateful to have a friend like him. Hiroshi turned his back to me, but for a split second I saw him blush.

“Of course, friend.” He replied.

“And thank you as well, Secret Agent Yuta.” I said as I bent down to ruffle the hair of Yuta.

“I’m not a Secret Agent, I’m master Hiroshi’s disciple.” He replied.

“Do you guys want to hang out with us?” Misako asked.

“Sure!” Yuta and Hiroshi said together as they showed a thumbs-up.

As the two not-so demons walked ahead, I placed Misako in her wheelchair. Though, as I was about to push her, she stopped me at the tug of my pants. Her head was down as to not show her emotions to me.

“Thank you, David. I was afraid of losing this. I don’t have the money to get a new one.” She said to me.

I bent down to her level, I wanted to look her in the eyes. I saw her with a face full of tears streaming down her cheeks. I used my hands to wipe the majority of her tears away, and she looked at me again, with those eyes. I hated seeing her cry, it made me want to cry with her. I wanted to see her happy, see her smile. Those violet eyes gleamed. And I smiled at her. I rarely smiled - ever since my accident.

“That was a fun date, don’t you think?” I stated.
