Chapter 41:

The Dream

How Not to Be a Medium

I rolled over again and sighed heavily. Camilla hasn't had time for me lately because of her final exams. She spent her days at her desk except for the hours she had to spend on duty. And I won't say I was bored. Zoey was busy too because she was preparing the exhibition. She was one of the best and hardest working people in her year, despite the hard times she had recently experienced.

An evil plan popped into my head, I walked over to my girlfriend and hugged her from behind, and started kissing her neck. At first, I thought she gave in, shivered, and started purring something, but then I got hit over the head with the book.

"What for?" I asked, offended, rubbing the place of impact.

"For bothering me," Camilla replied, looking at me tenderly. "I want to finish everything on time so I can have as much free time as possible, but I can't do it if you keep distracting me."

"If only I was efficient enough," I muttered under my breath.

"You are, but this time my determination is a little stronger," she tried to comfort me.

"But I'm so bored!"

"What were you doing for a hundred years before you started tormenting me?" She laughed heartily but turned back to the desk.

"Mostly lounging on the beach in Hawaii and getting into a lot of romance" I replied with a slight sigh, not that I miss it much, but those were fond memories.

"You sound like you miss it so much. I'm not forbidding you to do it again." Camilla was surprisingly serious as she said the words.

"Is this some kind of test?" I asked, hugging her again but not trying anything else.

"No way," she replied tartly but didn't push me away.

I watched her work for a while as she leafed through the great dictionary and the table of varieties, deftly finding her way through the chaos. Although she could easily cheat and ask for help from many spirits, she never considered it. She was self-employed, and I respected and loved her for that, even if it meant she ignored me a little in hard work mode.

"Do you have any plans or dreams that you would like to fulfill?" she asked worriedly. "Now you have more options to do so."

"No," I replied, surprised by her question. "I didn't even have them in my lifetime. All that mattered was the present moment, I was young and stupid, and I didn't think about the future. Maybe if I did, I'd finally settle down, probably have children, and grandchildren, and try to run the stables as well as my ancestors. I'm glad my sister turned out to be much better at it than I ever would have been."

"I'm sure you'd do great," she said, placing her hand on my cheek.

"Even after death, I wasn't interested in how this world changed, and then suddenly it seemed so interesting to me because you and Zoey were part of it." I smiled, grateful that she wasn't criticizing me, just trying to understand. "And are you dreaming of something?"

"I don't have specific goals." She nodded. "I would like to finish my studies, explore the world a bit, and above all, be a good partner for you, a good friend, sister, aunt, medium, remaining true to myself. However, if something pops into your head, let me know."

"In fact..."

"I'm listening, what do you wish for?"

"I've never been to the cinema," I replied a bit embarrassed, but her smile made me understand that she would do anything to make it come true quickly.
