Chapter 13:

What's Happening Here?

From the Depths of an Emotionless Heart

Mika was forcibly taken to a café by the two girls. As they walked by, passersby stared at them in astonishment. Understanding that resistance would lead him nowhere, he ceased resisting and eventually joined them at the café table.

"First, let us introduce ourselves. I'm Rin, and this excited girl next to me is Eirin."

"Um, okay."

The girls had certain expectations from Mika, and as he noticed their anticipatory gazes, he comprehended their wants.

"I'm Mika."

"Alright, we're sorry for bringing you here forcefully, but we were really curious."

"Well, you mentioned the reason for your curiosity, but isn't this a rather unusual situation?"

"Of course! You're a nonchalant person of our age who occasionally wanders around and helps people. Isn't that intriguing enough?" Eirin spoke excitedly.

"İndeed,  you don't look like a bad person, I mean if you had tattoos or walked around with a hood on, maybe we wouldn't be curious, but you're handsome too..." Rin said, offering an excuse-like explanation.

"Hmm, a hood and tattoos, huh... maybe I can get them," Mika murmured thoughtfully.

"What? Anyway, since we brought you here, the coffee is on us."

"But I didn't ask for such a thing."

"Come on! At least accept it as an apology." Eirin said with a saddened yet determined voice, looking into Mika's eyes.

Mika remained unable to entirely grasp the situation.

Bringing someone somewhere out of curiosity, ordering something, why would they do that.

"Okay, let it be filter coffee then."

"Eww, how can you drink that?" Rin stood up to place the order.

"Well, if you can drink those overly sweet things, I can easily drink what you call 'poison'."

"Alright, moody boy, since you said that... I'll leave you two alone to chat," Rin said before going to place the order.

"W-what? To chat... alone?" Eirin was embarrassed and angry at Rin's action.

Mika looked at the clock. He was losing time by staying here when the time was crucial to him.

"Hey, Eirin."

"Y-yes?" Eirin looked at Mika.

"Can I ask you something?"

"S-sure." Eirin looked at Mika with curiosity and excitement, waiting for what he was about to say.

"After I finish my coffee, can I leave?"

"W-what? S-sure, you can leave. It was a mistake to keep you here from the beginning. I apologize on behalf of Rin. She tends to ignore moral rules when she's curious."

"Hmm, I see."

So, the reason their actions didn't make much sense was that they went against etiquette. It's good that it's not a problem for me.

"Yes, by the way, this may be a bit personal, and you can choose not to answer if you want, but can I ask you a question?"

"U-um, yes, you can ask."

"Is there a reason for not going to school?"

Mika hesitated for a moment, torn between whether to say it or not.

"I'm sorry, I can't answer that."

"Okay, no problem."

After a moment of silence, Mika looked at Eirin. Eirin seemed a bit embarrassed and uncomfortable with the silence. She kept glancing at Rin, seemingly wondering when she would arrive.

If she feels like that, it must be tough. I can distract her at least:

"Hey Eirin, what are you two doing here?"

"U-um, we were waiting for a friend. But she took a long time, she was supposed to come from the hospital, but it seems like their work got delayed."

"Hmm, I see," Mika said monotonously, then remembered that his behavior might seem strange from the outside, so he tried to appear thoughtful and look outside as if lost in thought.

Finally, Rin came back with the coffee on a tray.

"Sorry for keeping you waiting."

"It's okay, there was a long line anyway," Mika said flatly.

After a moment of silence and sipping their coffees, Rin spoke up:

"So, did you have a chance to talk?"

"R-R-Rin! W-what do you mean by 'talk'?" said Eirin shamefaced.

Mika didn't fully understand the question.

Maybe she meant chatting, but why would she be curious about that? After all, they were the ones who dragged him here.

"Yeah, we talked," Mika said straightforwardly. Rin and Eirin were surprised by his acceptance, and Rin seemed to have high expectations.

"Hmm, really? Then, what do you think of Eirin?" Rin said, leaning her elbow on the table and sipping her coffee with her left hand.

"Rin!" Eirin started hitting Rin's shoulder in embarrassment.

"Hey, watch out! I have coffee in my hand, you'll spill it."

"What do you mean? What do you think of her?" Mika tried to understand the logic behind the question.

Why were they curious about it?

Rin looked at Mika in astonishment, finding his lack of embarrassment and not understanding the question equally strange.

"What am I thinking about, what do I think about her?" Mika tried to understand the logic behind the question.

                                    Why were they curious?

Rin looked at Mika in astonishment, finding it odd that he didn't feel embarrassed or understand the question.

"What would it be for, a beautiful girl like her-" Rin began to say, but her mouth was quickly covered by Eirin.

"Oh, Rin, just stop it!" Eirin blushed with embarrassment, unable to look even at Mika.

Now Mika understood the question. However, he wondered why they were inquiring about it.

But why were they asking him this?

Still, two  of curious eyes were fixed on him.

"Well, she's a beautiful girl, has a simple style, and a shy personality. She would probably be the type that guys like." Mika replied.

Rin burst into laughter, while Eirin lowered her head in embarrassment. Eirin was taken aback by Mika's response. Finally, Rin chuckled and said,

"Well then, would you like to go on a date?"

"I don't understand." Mika realized how big and absurd the question was, and he wondered why they would ask such a thing.

How could they ask someone they had just met?

Eirin couldn't take it anymore and shouted,

"Oh, Rin, what are you saying! I can't stand it anymore!" She stood up.

"Hold on, where are you going, the shy girl about to cry tears of happiness?" Rin was still laughing.

"What are you saying? I need to go to the restroom." Eirin turned away, but just as she did, someone appeared right in front of her.

"What's going on here?"

Mika recognized the voice. As he put his coffee cup down on the table, he looked up. The one asking the question was Saya.

They made eye contact. Both of them trying to understand what was happening.
