Chapter 9:

Unveiling the Arcane Path

Bound by Redemption

"So, how's Azrael?" Zephyra inquired, settling herself on a small bench outside the gym alongside Katarina and Valeria. Taking a seat beside them, I shared my observations. "Not bad, but he seems to focus primarily on utilizing his strength rather than honing his actual sword skills. That could prove to be a disadvantage when facing opponents who are fast, agile, or possess greater stamina," I explained, settling into a comfortable position on the bench. A playful remark escaped my lips, "I hope you won't use the techniques I've taught him to invade us humans." Zephyra's gaze locked onto mine, a hint of curiosity in her eyes. "Cid, do you genuinely believe that we demons can prevail against your kind?" she asked, her voice carrying a mixture of skepticism and intrigue. I shrugged my shoulders, a playful grin spreading across my face. "Who knows? Perhaps you demons have some secret plans up your sleeves," I replied, emphasizing the uncertainty in my tone. "After all, today I witnessed a Demon City, complete with a Demon Academy..." Zephyra interrupted, her voice conveying a sense of exasperation and understanding. "Why is that surprising, Cid? We demons are a civilization too, with schools and cities of our own," she stated matter-of-factly. Her words resonated within me, reminding me to shed the preconceived notions I had inherited from the human perspective. "I apologize," I interjected genuinely, acknowledging my oversight.

Zephyra let out a sigh, signaling a shift in topic. "Regardless, the first step of your magical training is complete. You possess a natural affinity for magic, which is why you were able to use the teleportation crystal," she explained, her voice tinged with a hint of surprise. This revelation struck me, as typically humans who don't practice magic at a young age lack the ability to wield it throughout their lives, unless they receive a transfer of magical affinity. Considering my father's disdain for mages, I couldn't recall ever being exposed to magic at such a young age. Zephyra stood up, her gaze fixed on me as I remained seated on the bench. Bending over, she placed her hand gently on the center of my chest, her feet positioned between mine. A seductive aura emanated from her, the warmth of her hand and her breath drawing me closer. "Isn't it fascinating? Someone who has never practiced magic before possessing an affinity for it," she whispered, her words captivating. At that moment, my heart raced, captivated by the beauty of this demon queen. Though she belonged to a different race, she had an undeniable allure that made my heart skip a beat. "U-um, I don't know," I stammered, feeling a wave of embarrassment wash over me as I leaned back on the bench. Sensing my unease, Zephyra removed her hand from my chest and stepped back, a playful smirk playing on her lips. "Haha, first time?" she teased, motioning for me to follow her as she walked towards another building in the academy, situated across from the gym.

"This is another gym, where we teach magic," Zephyra announced, introducing me to the instructor present. "Cid, meet Sylvana. She's the instructor here, and Sylvana, this is my human friend, Cid," she introduced us with a warm smile. My eyes widened as I took in Sylvana's appearance. She was a striking woman, likely in her thirties or forties, although it was difficult to gauge with demons and their unique aging process. My eyes widened as I took in Sylvana's striking appearance. She exuded an air of confidence and allure that was impossible to ignore. Dressed in a revealing cheongsam, the fabric hugged her curves in all the right places, emphasizing her ample bosom and accentuating her hourglass figure. The vibrant blue hue of her skin created a mesmerizing contrast against the crimson silk of her attire. Sylvana's long, elegantly tapered ears, reminiscent of those belonging to the elves, gracefully framed her enchanting face. Her piercing gaze, intensified by the slightly oversized glasses she wore, added an air of intellectual mystique to her captivating features. Cascading raven-black tresses cascaded down her back, adding a touch of seductive allure to her overall appearance. The plunging neckline of her cheongsam revealed a tantalizing glimpse of her ample cleavage, drawing attention to her sensual femininity. The fabric clung to her every contour, accentuating her shapely hips and accentuating her graceful movements. It was a bold choice, one that exuded confidence and an unapologetic celebration of her physical beauty.

I felt a mix of awe and shyness as I mustered the courage to introduce myself. "U-um, hi, I'm Cid," I stammered, my voice betraying my nervousness. In the background, I could hear the faint giggles and whispers of the demon children, finding amusement in my presence. Sylvana greeted me with a sweet yet confident voice, her words resonating through the room. "Hello, Cid." Zephyra wasted no time in explaining my situation to Sylvana. "Sylvana, Cid wants to learn magic and possesses some magical affinity. Could you guide him?" Zephyra inquired. A gleam of excitement sparkled in Sylvana's eyes, akin to a delighted puppy receiving a treat. With great enthusiasm, she eagerly nodded in response. "Yes, my lady!" Sylvana exclaimed, her eagerness slightly catching me off guard. It was a departure from the composed image she initially projected. Caught in the midst of their exchange, I mustered an awkward smile and silently observed Zephyra as she left the gym, leaving me in Sylvana's capable hands. Turning her attention back to me, Sylvana spoke in a manner that evoked a tale waiting to unfold. "So, Cid, a human who does not practice magic but possesses magical affinity somehow," she mused. I nodded in confirmation, acknowledging the unique circumstances. "Are you ready to enter the world of magic?" she asked, her voice carrying a sense of anticipation and wonder. Bowing my head respectfully, I replied, "Yes, thank you for the guidance you'll be providing."

"A special student, eh?" Sylvana remarked, her gaze sweeping over me as she circled around. There was an air of intrigue and suspicion in her eyes. Zephyra and Sylvana found it extraordinary that I possessed magical affinity despite never having practiced magic before. Taking hold of my hands, Sylvana's touch sent a surge of warmth coursing through my veins, causing my palms to grow increasingly hot. "Such a significant magical affinity... Are you absolutely certain you've never practiced before?" she inquired, studying me with a hint of skepticism. Assured of my lack of magical training, Sylvana ceased her questioning, albeit with a lingering sense of doubt. She promptly placed me in a demon class she was currently teaching, where I could undergo the basics of spellcasting. Fortunately, the class I joined was at an introductory level, ensuring that I wouldn't impede the progress of more experienced students. Over the course of an hour, Sylvana meticulously covered the fundamentals. I listened attentively, absorbing the knowledge while contemplating the enigma of my innate magical affinity. However, I soon relinquished the thought, realizing that my understanding of the subject matter was limited.

"Magic also requires specific keywords to cast spells," Sylvana explained, extending her hand before us. "Fireball... Strong, swift, and I command it to ascend!" With her invocation, a blazing fireball materialized, shooting skyward with astonishing velocity. I gazed in awe at the display, observing other students attempting the same feat. Some conjured nearly identical fireballs, while others produced nothing more than mere sparks. Encouragingly, Sylvana reminded us not to be disheartened if our fireballs were small or nonexistent. Even a basic spell held the essence of magic within it.

"Remember, magic is a give and take," Sylvana continued, her voice carrying a sense of caution. "When you create something, it draws from your magical reservoir. Basic spells like fireballs and waterballs consume a portion of your magical energy, which typically replenishes within a day or two. However, there are spells that demand much more. Necromantic magic, for instance, may deplete your entire magical affinity or even claim years from your lifespan." Her words sent a shiver down my spine, reminding me of the inherent risks associated with delving into certain branches of magic. I resolved to tread cautiously, aware that venturing into necromancy could bring about dire consequences. Yet, for the time being, such concerns seemed distant and inconsequential, given my current inability to conjure even a small fireball. Suppressing a chuckle, I refocused my attention on Sylvana's teachings, occasionally finding my gaze drifting to the gentle breeze that playfully teased her short and revealing cheongsam.
