Chapter 16:

Would You Like to Go With Him To The Doctor?

From the Depths of an Emotionless Heart

Saya and Mika's grandmother exchanged astonished glances. Meanwhile, Mika pondered his words, trying to find the right thing to say,

It's bit late, and there's a girl at my house at this hour. There's a high chance of my grandmother misunderstanding... Although, wait, she knows I don't have feelings. Anyway, I need to put an end to this before things get any weirder.

"Hello, grandmother. This is Saya, she's my friend from school. She came to visit." Mika said, then thought to himself,

"If I said it was from the internet instead of school, she might object. So, I can introduce her as someone from my old school."

Mika looked at Saya, and they exchanged a brief glance.

Yes, I'm Saya. It's a pleasure to meet you. I came to visit Mika because he's been absent from school, and I was concerned," Saya explained.

Grandmother's eyes sparkled.

"Oh, really? That's delightful. I'm Ava, Mika's grandmother. But feel free to call me Ava."

"W-what? I can't do that suddenly. It would feel disrespectful," Saya replied, her face flushing with embarrassment.

"No problem for me sweetie." Ava said.

"Anyway, please come inside, grandmother," Mika gestured for her to enter.

After they all entered, Mika and Saya briefly and vaguely described their day, mixed with lies.

"I see, I was happy too, my dear Mika. Or, well..." Grandmother stopped herself mid-sentence, realizing what she had said, but Mika noticed.

"Grandmother, you know that I-"

"I know, but I was still very surprised that you had a girl or, well, anyone over at the house."

"Well, yes..." Mika glanced at Saya. It all started because of Saya's insistence. Saya also looked at Mika and smiled.

"Well, then, I should get going. Thank you for everything. I'm glad Mika is doing well." Saya said.

Yes, thank you for coming over. Allow me to see you off," Mika and Saya rose from their seats, but grandmother called out to them.

Hey, wait a moment. I know Saya might seem a bit rude, but would you mind staying a bit longer? That is, if you're not relying on public transportation."

"W-what? No, my house is, um, pretty close." Saya turned around in surprise to answer.

"What are you saying, grandmother?" Mika asked, trying to understand what was happening.

"Mika, the stores are still open. You know I can't relax without a cup of tea at night. Take my wallet from my bag and buy a pack of tea."

"What? Is it really the right time for that?" Mika couldn't make sense of it.  Why now?

Saya shifted her gaze between the two of them, attempting to grasp the situation.

"Just do as I say. In the meantime, I need to have a little chat with Saya."

"But drinking tea at night keeps you awake."

"Don't worry, I have an early doctor's appointment tomorrow, so I need to wake up early. I'll drink it accordingly." Grandmother laughed.

Saya turned to Mika in astonishment.

You have a doctor's appointment tomorrow?" Saya inquired, her curiosity piqued.

"Yes..."

"That's why I came in the first place." Grandmother responded happily.

Saya felt disappointed and thoughtful as she looked down at the ground while the others continued talking.

"Well, then, I'll go to the store." After taking money from his wallet, Mika left the house.

Why was my grandmother keeping Saya at home to create an awkward situation? I hope my grandmother doesn't realize the lie.

Mika was back from the market

"I'm back."

He opened the door and headed towards the kitchen. While he was brewing tea, his grandmother called out to him.

"Mika!"

"Yes?"

"Tomorrow, you'll go to the doctor with Saya."

"What?" Mika walked in, and Saya and his grandmother were sitting there.

"I said, tomorrow, you'll go to the doctor with Saya.

"Why?"

"Well, um... Your uncle is coming over tomorrow, and I need to be home. Saya mentioned that she is available," his grandmother explained, glancing at Saya.

"Y-yes..." Saya said, feeling embarrassed.

"Okay, I understand, but why so early? Besides, will you be home in the morning?" Mika asked.

"Yes, I'll see you off and then come back."

"Okay..." Saya looked happy.

After having a cup of tea together, Mika accompanied Saya to the front door to see her off.

"Thank you for today, Saya. You've been a great help with the photos."

 "You're welcome."

"Oh, by the way, I almost forgot. You left your drawing tablet. Wait, let me get it."

Mika turned around and was about to go inside when Saya grabbed his arm. When Mika turned around involuntarily, they made eye contact. Saya let go of his hand, and she clasped her hands in front of her chest.

"W-well, t-there's no need. I'll be back tomorrow anyway, and the d-drawings aren't finished yet. So, if it's convenient for you..."

Mika looked at Saya.

Why was Saya behaving so strangely?

"Okay, sure." Mika said. Saya seemed relieved.

"Well then, see you tomorrow," Saya bid farewell with a wave.

"See you." At that moment, from behind the living room door, Ava, who had interrupted them, saw everything and smiled.

"Why does all this have to happen to me?" said and  he went inside.
