Chapter 47:

Jack vs Selphine

Beyond The Void

Selphine wasted no time bombarding me with a barrage of spells, most of which I had no answer to. Luckily, the soul transfer had replenished my entire energy reserves, but I feared that even that would not be enough to protect me from the monstrous wrath of the woman facing me, thus I could do nothing but remain on the defensive and dodge everything.

However, her onslaught didn’t seem to slow down for even a single second, my evasive maneuvers were good but naturally I couldn’t keep them up, and eventually I got struck by an electric arrow. Selphine took advantage of the hit to multiply the intensity of her attacks even further, and the more I got hit, the less I could dodge, which meant the more I ended up getting hit.

Eventually, it reached point where nearly all of her attacks connected, whether that was ice particles, electric arrows, fireballs, everything was hitting, and my body was taking devastating damage, even as I tried to block what I couldn’t evade.

I had to start taking action soon before I ended up being completely overwhelmed, unable to do anything. Unfortunately, my magic was nowhere near the level of Arthur’s, despite being in the same body….wait, no! I completely forgot that I’m not in his body anymore! What an idiot!

I came up with a theory and tested it out by enhancing my right fist and striking an ice block that came straight towards me, instantly shattering it into a million pieces. Well, not a million, technically, but I didn’t really have the time to count the exact amount.

As I thought! I have access to Louise’s tremendous strength! What a stroke of luck!

The fact that my theory was thus proven correct boded incredibly well for me, as pure, physical strength might have been the only way for me to win this matchup, which I conveniently had…No, it wasn’t convenient. Arthur had done this on purpose, he’d planned it out the entire time. What an idiot! He could have at least informed me of his intentions, instead of telling me to simply just trust him! Either way, what’s done was done, I had to concentrate on this fight.

I charged right at Selphine, to which she immediately started jumping back. As I suspected, she wasn’t eager to engage in a battle of fists, and had been perfectly content to keep me at bay. Now that I’d realized my advantage, she halted her assault and opted for a tactical retreat, as she knew that a single hit from me could prove lethal to her. The entire momentum of the fight had swung toward me in a single instant!

Unfortunately for her, not only was I superior in terms of pure power, but also in terms of speed. I ran much faster than her, closing in the distance. She attempted to teleport away, but I grabbed her arm, pulled her towards me, and punched her right in the stomach with everything I had.

Selphine doubled over and threw up a pool of blood as her knees buckled. I grabbed her by the hair and tossed her towards the nearest wall, and the pain of the stomach hit had made her groggy, so she just slammed right into it and fell flat on her face, nearly limp

I knew this wouldn’t be enough so I ran towards her once again, but her recovery was much faster than I expected. She got up and instantly crafted a shield strong enough to withstand my punch. Of course, the shield shattered immediately, but it had bought her enough time to teleport back up onto the balcony, before falling on one knee.

I didn’t chase her, because I knew that would prove to be useless. The distance between us was great enough for her to teleport away, she wouldn’t try retreating on foot anymore as that had proven to be a grave error that nearly cost her the fight. From now on, she’d be willing to expend energy simply to keep away from me, I’d blown my chance to end her and didn’t know if I’d get another one anytime soon.

My thoughts shifted to Arthur and the masked men but I quickly shook my head and returned to the matter at hand. Suddenly, Selphine opened a portal and took out a familiar object: The Hourglass.

“I didn’t expect to have to use this, to be honest…” she muttered. “But the body of this girl is too much of a threat for me to take lightly. You should thank Arthur for that.”

“What are you going to use that for?” I asked.

“Fool, do you really expect me to explain to you how I’m going to defeat you? All you need to know is that there’s far more to this hourglass than to test people, like that so called order of Arthur’s had done.”

“Well, to be honest, I kinda did expect you to explain, that’s what all villains usually do in anime.”

“I’m not a villain, idiot! You’re the villain! Besides, this isn’t an anime!”

“That’s exactly what a villain would say!” I exclaimed.

“Fine, then I am a villain, in that case!”

“See, I told you! You’re a villain!”

“What the-so I’m a villain either way?” She complained. “How is that fair? Wait, no! We’re getting side tracked, enough of this! Time to meet your doom!”

“More proof that you’re a villain…” I muttered in reaction to those cliche words she’d just spoken.

Suddenly, the hourglass lit up in a pale blue light, as if the moon shone within it.

“What the hell?” I was startled, after all, I hadn’t for the hourglass to be a major player in this final battle.

“Behold, this is what happens to those who try to undermine and destroy the planet known as Obrillis, and all of its inhabitants!” Selphine spoke.

The blue light started shining even brighter and was now enveloping the entire large room we stood on.

“Annihilation.”
