Chapter 22:

Shadows of the Western

Silent Shards

The exploration of the western side of the Republic of HarmonVale led us into the depths of an ancient and abandoned forest. The darkness of the cursed land seemed to seep into our very bones as we traversed through the dense canopy of trees. The once vibrant and flourishing forest had succumbed to a relentless drought and unforgiving dryness, leaving it desolate and haunted.

As we ventured further, we stumbled upon the remnants of an abandoned village. Crumbled structures lay in ruins, their walls covered in dust and debris. The eerie silence was interrupted only by the soft rustling of leaves and the creaking of timeworn wood.

Curiosity gnawed at me, and I turned to Arin, the scholarly genius of our group, seeking an explanation. "What happened to this place?" I inquired, my eyes scanning the forlorn surroundings.

Arin furrowed his brows, deep in thought. "It appears that a sudden and prolonged drought struck this area," he replied. "The lack of water and the harsh conditions drove the inhabitants away, leaving this village to wither and perish."

Vice Captain Foria chimed in, her connection with nature offering her insights. "The locals must have believed the land to be cursed due to its relentless dryness," she mused. "Such hardships can breed superstitions and fears."

Amidst the ruins, I couldn't help but wonder about the mysteries concealed within this forsaken place. However, our primary objective remained clear—to find the components of the poison responsible for the turmoil in the kingdom.

"Where might we find the components of this poison?" I asked Arin, eager to get on with our task.

Arin's eyes gleamed with the spark of intellect. "Based on my analysis and sensory abilities," he began, "I believe the components should be somewhere in this vicinity. They emit a distinctive energy signature, and I can sense it nearby."

With his guidance, we split up, each of us determined to cover more ground in search of the elusive components. Arin ventured into what seemed to be a partially intact structure, its appearance strangely preserved amidst the decay. Vice Captain Foria gracefully moved through the dense forest, her abilities attuned to the secrets of the land. And I carefully explored the area near the debris, hoping to unearth any hidden clues.

Inside the ancient structure, Arin meticulously examined the surroundings. Layers of dust had settled on every surface, but he remained undeterred.

He called out to us, his voice cutting through the eerie silence, "Hey, guys, come over here." Without hesitation, I and Foria made our way toward him. As we drew closer, we noticed something peculiar in his hand—a small vial-like container, partially obscured under a mound of rubble.

Amidst the debris, I couldn't help but ask, my curiosity piqued, "What is that thing?"

Before anyone could respond, a sudden, sharp voice echoed in my head, sending shivers down my spine, "Master, it appears something is moving."

Recognizing the voice as Sylphalope's, I inquired, "What's moving?"

Before I could process the answer, a chilling sight unfolded before us—a group of corpses, seemingly animated, emitting an ominous aura. Vice Captain Foria blurted out, "What in the world is happening?"

Arin, with a hint of uncertainty, replied, "I don't know. But it seems they are coming straight for us."

I furrowed my brow, thinking quickly, while staying attuned to Sylphalope's insights about the area. Her knowledge proved invaluable as she revealed a crucial piece of information.

"Listen carefully. We need to run, and don't stop to question anything," I directed the group.

Arin was about to voice her concerns, but I interjected, urgency in my tone, "No time for questions. Take the container and stick close to me."

Exchanging glances, Arin and Vice Captain Foria understood the gravity of the situation. Their heartbeats quickened, and beads of sweat formed on their brows as fear and determination flickered in their eyes. We dashed towards a tall, relatively intact building nearby.

However, as we approached the building, the eerie corpses emerged from its shadows. My mind raced as I sought answers from Sylphalope, "What does this mean?"

"Master, something isn't right," Sylphalope responded.

"What do we do now?" I inquired silently.

"I apologize for not mentioning it earlier. There's a hidden passage to the left corner of that building. Hurry, make your way there," Sylphalope advised urgently.

"Got it," I replied, the sense of purpose guiding our movements.

Arin glanced at me, curious and concerned, "What's the plan? And why are you whispering to yourself?"

"Sorry for the secrecy. There's a safe place in the left corner of that building. Let's head there immediately," I explained, pointing towards the building's destination.

Vice Captain Foria sighed, a hint of exasperation in her voice, "Well, I suppose it would've been better to know that earlier."

As I said about the safe passage, Arin and Vice Captain Foria went all out, taking out the corpse in front of us in our way. But as they were engaging in combat, it was all null. In frustration, I remarked, "Seems like there is no use in physical engagement."

"Yeah, you are right," Vice Captain Foria said, her breath slightly ragged from the exertion.

Thus, they began doing something, and those threads started to become visible. Even though it was inside them, I could see it now. "What is it exactly?" I wondered.

To this, Sylphalope reminded me, "Master, it's Aurorush. The energy flow of this world, which Piro has mentioned."

Understanding a little better now, we knew that these threads represented the Aurorush energy, something we had encountered before. It was a mystical force that permeated the world, said to be both life-giving and dangerous when misused. But there was no time to ponder its mysteries further.

As we prepared to run, a new threat emerged. A few of the corpses started to merge, transforming into an instinct-driven wild creature. It swiftly rushed towards us, teeth bared, and claws poised to strike. Vice Captain Foria, ever the courageous warrior, made a quick decision.

"You two, go ahead. I will take care of this creature," she commanded, her eyes determined.

"But..." Arin began to protest, concern etched on his face.

Interrupting him, Vice Captain Foria reassured, "Don't worry. I'll catch up with you later. Just go now!"

Feeling torn between leaving her behind and understanding the urgency of the situation, Arin reluctantly nodded. We went near the passage and stepped inside. However, as we did, we were met with a sudden surprise. It wasn't just a passage; it led to a hidden chamber.

Before we could make sense of our surroundings, the passage beneath our feet gave way, and we both fell. We tumbled down through darkness, our hearts pounding with fear and anticipation. As we landed, a soft glow illuminated the chamber, revealing ancient runes etched on the walls and artifacts that seemed to emanate a mystical energy.
