Chapter 4:

No Going Back.

Machines of War

Mai was staring out of the window of the car, moving exactly 64 mph. They'd already spent almost exactly an hour and 24 minutes in the car, and they were getting close to the field where the exam was being held. There was no doubt Mai was a smart girl, she was an almost straight A student all throughout school, and it's even a miracle she was accepted to take the exam. Tens of thousands of high school students from around the world submit applications, portfolios, so many things just to be one of the five thousand extremely lucky kids, handpicked by only the best fighter pilots in the world, to even take the entrance exam. Then, only half of those kids are picked to attend the academy for then next four years, not even mentioning the kids who got expelled during their time at school. Her thought was broken by Kelly tapping her shoulder with a worried expression. Mai looked over to her.

"Are you okay?" She asked, her face returning to a neutral expression. "You looked worried and a bit scarred." She said. What Mai lacked in understanding human emotions, Kelly made up for.

"It's nothing." She said. She continued to look through the window at the quickly-moving landscape. She was reviewing in her head, but she looked over to Kelly, who seemed to be thinking hard and holding the skin of her thumb in her mouth. "You wanna review together?" She asked, smiling. Kelly looked over to her, taking her thumb out of her mouth to speak.

"You'd be willing to up up with me?" She asked. Sure, Kelly could be a bit loud and dense at times, but she was still Mai's only friend, and she'd found ways to shut her up at times.

(Mai, Kelly)

"Of course. I want to get in together, and like you always say, 'I wont go if you're not going.' and I really want to go here."
"That's sweet, but you promise not to take the offer if i don't get it, right?"
"I won't. I may be cold, but I'm not that mean."
"Thank you. I don't want to be alone for four years at high school without you.
"Same, so let's get as much studying in as we can."
"Alright!"
"Just don't be to loud, ok?"
"Yeah, sorry."

After about 15 minutes of studying, the car parked in a lot with about 40 other cars. They were doing entrance exams in groups of 59 since there were so many kids. Kelly and Mai stepped out of  the car and stretched their legs before walking into the field to wait for the exam to start. There were a few big metal ball that looked to be a small mechs. She looked over to see Kelly staring at them in amazement as she walked, then smiled about how dorky her friend was when it came to the towering machines. They kept walking towards the groups of kids already split up and talking in groups of about three or four, waiting for the exam to start. There really was no going back now.
