Chapter 59:

Beyond The Void

Beyond The Void

“Happy two year anniversary!” I was immediately assaulted by an onslaught of balloons as I opened the door to the apartment.. Maria picked me up like I was a toy, my face immediately flushing red.

“H-Hey, stop that!”

“I know you like when I pick you up, don’t deny it!” She smirked smugly and ruffled my hair, then tossed me onto the couch.

“What’s the occasion?” I asked.

“Our two year anniversary from escaping the void!”

“Seriously? What’s next, the anniversary of when you walked into a random room, or something?”

‘Shut up.” She pinched each of my cheeks and squeezed them while laughing.

“Anyway, I got to run somewhere, real quick, I’ll be back soon.” I got off the couch.

“No!” She wrapped her arms around me and winked as I squirmed helplessly. “I’m coming with you!”

“O-Okay, yeah, but all I’m doing is to go pick up some supplies. I need a new amplifier for my guitar, since my last one broke, remember?”

“Cool, I’m paying.” She grabbed me by the hand and started dragging me out the house.

“Wait, no I can pay for it, I-”I wasn’t able to finish that sentence, as she placed a finger on my mouth, leaving me speechless.

Later, we walked on a sidewalk, side by side.

“So, when are you guys playing next?” Maria asked. “I get so hyped at every single one of your shows, I actually can’t wait!”

“You’re only saying that because I’m part of the band…the truth is, we suck.”

“No, you don’t! I may not be the best judge of music, but even I can tell you guys are pretty good!”

“I don’t know about that…”

For some reason, I began to think about what a nice day it was. I started to squeeze Maria’s hand a bit tighter, and she planted a kiss on my cheek in response. We then kept walking forward to our destination together, hand in hand, shoulders touching. She caught me staring at her multiple times, winking every time as I looked away in embarrassment.

And then, to my left, a young man passed. His body was pretty small, but not to the point of being malnourished. He had long blonde hair, enough to make anyone else jealous. His eyes were blue, clear as the sky. But what stood out was his clothing. He did not wear a suit, but a shirt and shorts, both of which were dark blue.

We weren’t friends, but we weren’t enemies. Acquaintances wasn’t exactly the right word, either. Perhaps there would never be a correct word to describe our relationship.

I looked back for a split second, as did he, and our eyes met. I had been wrong, it seems. At that time, I thought that would be the last time I ever saw him.

The boy nodded slightly in a polite manner, as did I. We then turned around and kept walking in opposite directions.
