Chapter 10:

Upcoming Events

Kai & Takumi

Okay, Everyone, we have a school festival coming up in November," the teacher's announcement filled the classroom, sparking a wave of animated discussions and eager suggestions. The air crackled with anticipation as my classmates fervently proposed their ideas for this year's theme.

"How about we do a maid cafe!" one student exclaimed, a mischievous grin on their face. "Man, I'd love to see hotties in maid outfits!" Laughter erupted, and nods of agreement followed suit.

"Yeah, totally dude! I'm down for the maid cafe theme," another student chimed in, eliciting more chuckles.

Then, a different voice chimed in, its owner presenting an intriguing twist. "Yes, we should do a maid cafe, but the other way around. How about dressing you boys up in maid outfits?" A female student suggested, and a flurry of excited chatter erupted as everyone pondered the prospect.

Amid the growing excitement, playful arguments erupted over who would make the most amusing maid. The teacher's soothing voice attempted to restore order. "Okay, everyone, settle down. We're still in August, so you have two months to decide on a theme. Let's not argue over this. Class is dismissed. Head to your clubs now," she instructed, her words bringing a temporary end to the spirited debate.

A school festival, huh? The thought lingered in my mind as the classroom began to empty. Hachimura's voice broke through my contemplation, seeking my opinion. "What do you think, Takumi?" he asked.

I sighed, my response laden with a tinge of indifference. "Oh, um, I'm not really all that thrilled about school festivals. It's the same thing every November," I replied, my focus already on gathering my belongings.

"Sigh, you're no fun, Takumi. Come on, you gotta live a little and have some fun," Hachimura teased, following me as I headed toward the calligraphy club.

As Hachimura continued to talk about the school festival, I couldn't help but wonder why he was accompanying me to my club. "Anyway, Hachimura, why are you following me to my club?" I inquired, genuinely puzzled.

Hachimura's confusion was palpable. "Hm? You don't remember? We talked about it on the rooftop. I said I was interested in joining the calligraphy club. I was thinking about it, though but I had some time to think it over, and now I'm in the same club as you," he explained, his arm casually draped over my shoulder.

Realization dawned on me, and I offered a sheepish acknowledgment. "Right, I guess I totally forgot about that part of the conversation," I admitted, a faint hint of a smile tugging at my lips.

Together, we made our way to the calligraphy club room, Hachimura taking in the surroundings. "So, you're the only member here?" he asked, glancing around.

"Yeah, I am," I confirmed, my attention drawn to my calligraphy tools.

Hachimura's curiosity prompted him to probe further. "But don't you ever feel lonely being in the club by yourself, with no one to share your passion with?"

I shrugged, my response measured and honest. "No, not really. It's really peaceful when I'm by myself. I can work on my calligraphy in peace. And can we change the subject? I really don't like all that pity talk," I requested, my gaze resolute.

Hachimura, sensing my discomfort, quickly acquiesced. "Ah, right, my bad," he conceded, redirecting the conversation.

As our dialogue took a different turn, Hachimura's mention of my home visit piqued my curiosity. "Anyway, Hachimura, remember when you were at my place, and my mom invited you to stay for dinner? I've been curious about how you knew where I lived. I've never given anyone my street address besides Hiroshi," I ventured, my tone casual yet genuinely inquisitive.

Hachimura's attention shifted, his focus now on my calligraphy strokes. "Wow, Takumi, your brushstrokes are amazing, man. You're really into calligraphy," he observed, effectively sidestepping my question.

I wasn't about to let the topic go so easily. "Hey, don't try to change the subject," I protested, determined to get an answer.

Before Hachimura could respond, the bell rang, its familiar chime signaling the end of the class. Our exchange was abruptly interrupted as we began to gather our belongings.

With the day's end upon us, Hachimura suggested we head home. "Well, looks like school is over. We better start heading home," he remarked, his relief evident.

I wasn't about to let him off the hook just yet. "Fine, but you're not off the hook that easily," I retorted, my resolve unwavering as I prepared to depart.
