Chapter 14:

Unintentionally, my heart became hers

Caffeine Cupid: a love brewed in coffee and chaos

At 6 o'clock in the evening, our group convened, having shed our school uniforms in favor of casual attire. I opted for a dark blue t-shirt paired with black jeans, arriving a tad earlier and finding myself alone. I leaned against a graffiti-covered brick wall and stood in a corner, my eyes fixed on the smartphone. I chuckled at a video of a clumsy kitten attempting to pounce on a feather toy, its tiny paws and wide eyes invoking a sense of endearing clumsiness.

The sound of breathlessness marked Cherry's arrival. "Is it just you here, Karma?"

"Yeah, the rest are always late," I sighed, a hint of annoyance in my voice.

"Oh, by the way, Cherry..." I began.

"Yes?" Her curiosity piqued.

"I was thinking about that new café downtown. Rumor has it their pastries are really something."

A smile tugged at the corner of her lips. "Yeah, I've heard the same. Not that I've been actively researching café reviews or anything. Just, you know, general knowledge."

A nervous laugh escaped me. "Haha, yeah, absolutely. So, maybe we could check it out sometime? I mean, if you're interested. No pressure."

Her reply was filled with a mix of intrigue and nonchalance. "Sure, that sounds... nice. I'm a fan of pastries. I mean, who isn't, right?"

"That's true, pastries are universally loved. And, um, the café's ambiance seems pretty cool, from what I've heard."

"Yeah, ambiance is definitely... important. Of course." She nodded in agreement.

"So, what day were you thinking? You know, if it aligns with your schedule," I queried, my neck stiffening awkwardly.

Her response echoed my sentiment. "Well, I'm quite flexible. I mean, my schedule is. I can make adjustments. Any day works for me, really."

"That's good to know because, uh, my schedule is also... pretty flexible. So, any day suits me," I managed to reply, my nerves still evident.

"You know, I've heard they serve really good coffee too," I added, attempting to keep the conversation going.

"Seriously? You're not just saying that to lure me in, right? Because if they have good coffee, I am absolutely sold!"

"Absolutely. You'd be the reigning caffeine queen," I chuckled, easing into the moment.

As our conversation flowed, I noticed Daichi waving at me from a short distance away. Returning the gesture, I watched as Cherry greeted him, her laughter filling the air.

"You guys are prompt, huh? Good for you," Daichi remarked.

"Yeah, sort of," Cherry replied, her amusement evident. "We were just passing time."

Daichi's whispered words held a touch of encouragement. "Keep it up, Karma. I'm rooting for you." A blush crept onto my cheeks, but I managed to maintain a poker face, aware that the rest of the group was about to join us.

Soon, the rest of our friends arrived, and we embarked on our journey to the karaoke lounge. As we stepped inside, a charged atmosphere greeted us—a symphony of conversations interwoven with the rhythmic beats of familiar anime tunes. The room was alive with vibrant neon lights, casting a captivating kaleidoscope of colors. Plush leather sofas and vintage microphones beckoned, promising a night filled with musical enchantment. In one corner, a sizable screen awaited, poised to display lyrics that would accompany the anime theme songs. Our group settled onto the inviting sofas, each finding a cozy spot amidst the laughter and spirited chatter.

Satoshi, the group's spirited extrovert, seized the microphone with a flourish. His eyes sparkled with anticipation as he belted out the opening lines with unwavering enthusiasm. The others cheered him on, their voices merging with his in a chorus of encouragement. Each note was infused with the sheer joy of letting loose, of shedding inhibitions and embracing the freedom to simply have fun.

As the song reached its crescendo, Satoshi passed the microphone to Tatsuya. His voice, smooth and soulful, painted the room with a warm undertone, a stark contrast to the upbeat anthem. Our eyes gleamed with admiration, captivated by the raw emotion he poured into every verse.

As the night unfolded, I couldn't help but notice the way Cherry's eyes sparkled whenever she laughed. I found myself entranced by her subtle smiles and the way she would glance at me when she thought I wasn't looking.

With a seamless transition, the atmosphere shifted from tender to exuberant as Daichi, bounded onto the stage. He had chosen a high-energy opening theme that perfectly matched his vibrant personality. His voice was a spirited force of nature, his wild antics and exaggerated expressions sending us all into fits of laughter.

We continued to take turns, each song a reflection of our individuality. Kobayashi's surprising choice—contrasting her gentle demeanor—served as a testament to her hidden strengths. As she and Cherry exchanged words, forming a new connection, my heart swelled with contentment.

When Cherry's turn arrived, her initial shyness gave way to a captivating. I couldn’t help but be captivated by the raw emotion she poured into each note. Her closed eyes and gentle swaying conveyed a deep connection to the lyrics, her heart intertwined with the music. The room collectively held its breath, releasing it in a sigh of appreciation as she concluded with a poignant, soul-stirring note.

During her performance, her gaze met mine momentarily, as if sharing the song's sentiments directly with me. Or perhaps, it was just a figment of my imagination?

The microphone found its way into my hands, my heart racing as Cherry's gaze locked onto mine. The song I chose bore a hidden message, a confession I had never dared utter aloud. With every word I sang, I felt drawn closer to Cherry, our connection deepening with each note. The world seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of us and the shared moment we were weaving together.

The song reached its crescendo, my voice growing stronger, my eyes fixed on Cherry. The lyrics gained new meaning as I sang with newfound purpose, pouring my emotions into the melody. I noticed a delicate blush gracing Cherry's cheeks, her gaze unwavering.

As the night drew to a close, and everyone shared their final songs, my mind was a whirlwind of emotions. I realized that the chemistry I felt with Cherry was more than just a passing attraction. My feelings for her had deepened, and the moments we shared had woven a thread of connection that I couldn't ignore.

As the karaoke party came to an end, I found myself standing next to Cherry. The words I wanted to say were caught in my throat, but the atmosphere between us was charged with unspoken sentiments. And as we exchanged a knowing smile, my heart whispered that perhaps, just perhaps, my unspoken feelings were reciprocated.
