Chapter 15:

Unveiled Truths and Whispers of the Heart

Caffeine Cupid: a love brewed in coffee and chaos

The gentle breeze rustled the curtains, allowing fragmented glimpses of crimson-dyed cirrocumulus clouds from beyond. The slightly ajar window welcomed the passage of the wind, which carried with it the transient beauty of the outside world. This fleeting scenery danced before my eyes, causing my hands, which held a book, to pause. The intermittent flicker at the edge of my vision grew annoyingly persistent, disrupting my focus. Amidst my struggle to concentrate, Cherry remained unperturbed. Her gaze remained fixed on the pages of her book, gracefully following each line with unwavering attention.

A sense of awe enveloped me as I stole glances at her. It was as if an angel had taken her seat right beside me. Leaning my head onto my desk, I gazed at her from my adjacent spot. The day was gradually drawing to a close, marking the early days of September. Despite the lingering warmth of summer during the day, a chill was setting in, with the brisk wind signaling the impending arrival of evenings draped in coolness.

Yet, my mind was consumed with thoughts that had little to do with the changing season. Thoughts about Cherry had taken precedence – how to express my feelings, whether she saw me as more than a friend, or if I was just a face in the crowd. The questions played a never-ending loop in my mind, threatening to overshadow everything else. Amidst this internal turmoil, I heard snippets of my friends' chatter in the background.

"Oh man, I haven't even started. I should probably make a checklist or something," Tatsuya complained.

"Same here. I just hope I don't forget my charger. Can't survive without my gadgets, you know?" Satoshi chimed in.

"What about you, Karma?" Tatsuya turned his attention to me.

Lost in my thoughts, I hadn't realized they were addressing me until Satoshi waved his hand in front of my vacant gaze. Shaking my head to refocus, I replied, "Yeah, what? Sorry, I just drifted off for a moment."

"Drifting off like a hopeless romantic. What a sight," Daichi's voice teased, punctuated with a smirk.

Embarrassment painted my cheeks a shade redder. I turned away, grateful that Cherry was engrossed in her book, unaware of my mortification.

"Shh, not here, guys. Just cut it out," I implored, my awkwardness laid bare.

"He's not even denying it, haha!" Tatsuya's laughter joined the teasing chorus.

"Anyway, what were you discussing?" I quickly changed the topic, hoping to shift the attention away from my blushing self.

"The upcoming school trip," Daichi answered, his gaze glued to his phone.

"Yeah, just general stuff. What to pack and all that," Satoshi added.

"Ah, right. I'd almost forgotten about it. But, when is it, though? We haven't been given the exact date yet, have we?" I inquired, my mind racing to catch up.

"True, sensei hasn't shared the date yet. All we know is it'll be sometime within the next two weeks," Daichi clarified.

Two weeks – enough time for my mind to be muddled with thoughts of Cherry and my impending confession. I fought to suppress these musings, knowing I needed to focus on the present.

No, Karma, not now. You can't let your mind wander. Not today, at least.

Sighing heavily, I reminded myself not to get carried away. As the bell signaled the start of lunch break, I decided to clear my head and take some time for introspection.

"I'm heading to the rooftop to gather my thoughts. Catch you guys later," I excused myself.

Seated in solitude on the rooftop, I contemplated my next steps. Daichi's words echoed in my mind.

Just remember, if you're late, someone else might swoop in.

I clenched my fists, resolving to act soon.

Act quickly, Karma. This is your chance.

But doubt gnawed at me – was she even interested in me romantically? My thoughts were a maelstrom, a torrent of emotions swirling within. The weight of my feelings was almost overwhelming.

"Dude, you seem off. Everything okay?" Satoshi's concerned voice pulled me from my thoughts as he settled down beside me.

"I'm fine, just deep in thought," I replied, attempting to sound nonchalant.

"You need any help or someone to talk to?" Daichi chimed in, genuine concern etched on his face.

Shaking my head, I forced a smile. "Thanks, guys. I appreciate it. I'm just... pondering about something."

Tatsuya patted my back. "No worries, bro. We're here for you. Feel free to share whenever you're ready."

The lunch break meandered by as my friends lent their ears and offered comfort. School hours concluded, and we embarked on our journey home, a chorus of laughter and friendly banter accompanying us. But amidst our camaraderie, Ryuu's appearance cast a shadow on my mood.

"Cherry, your mom will be late today. She's prepared dinner already; it's in the fridge. And remember, if you need anything, just call me," Ryuu informed her, standing with us at the crossroads.

Confusion and irritation welled up within me.

Who is this Ryuu, and how did he have such intimate knowledge of Cherry's life? Why is he always around her?

These thoughts gnawed at me, creating a sense of unease.

Cherry responded calmly, her voice betraying none of the thoughts racing through my head. "Sure thing. Thanks for letting me know."

As Cherry offered a casual reply, my unease intensified.

Finally, she bid us farewell and began walking away. I couldn't hold back any longer; I needed answers.

Before Ryuu could depart, I halted him. "Hey, Ryuu. Can I speak with you for a moment? It's important."

His surprise was evident, but he agreed. "Sure, what is it?"

I glanced around, confirming that Cherry was safely on her way home. This was my chance to confront Ryuu, to clarify his role in Cherry's life. "What is your relationship with Cherry? Who is she to you?"

Ryuu's response was curt, delivered in an icy tone. "And why does that concern you? It's none of your business."

"But it does concern me!" My frustration spilled out, my voice growing louder.

Tatsuya, Satoshi, and Daichi exchanged glances, clearly taken aback by my intensity.

"It does concern me because I'm in love with her," I confessed, the weight of my emotions evident in my words.

"I need to know what she means to you. I can't bear to see someone else showering her with affection. If you're together, just tell me already. I'll back off if she's happy with someone else. I won't disrupt her life," I choked on my own words, tears threatening to spill.

A stunned silence enveloped the group. Ryuu took a moment to absorb the gravity of my words before replying.

"You should back off regardless. I know Cherry far better than you do. You don't stand a chance."

The agony within me surged, but I refused to back down.

"I need answers, not your opinions. Tell me who she is to you. Tell me if you're in a relationship with her so I can let go. I won't interfere if she's already happy with someone."

Daichi and Tatsuya restrained me, sensing my distress.

"That's enough, Karma. Calm down. You need to collect yourself," Tatsuya urged, his voice gentle yet firm.

Unwilling to relent, I continued to glare at Ryuu. "Leave me alone. I want answers from you."

"You really are relentless, aren't you? Just like Cherry said." Ryuu's smirk was infuriating, pushing me further.

Confusion gnawed at my mind as I tried to process his words. "What do you mean?"

His laughter rang out, unsettling and oddly knowing. "Why on earth would I date a caffeine-addicted lunatic like her? You really thought I was romantically interested in her?"

A wave of disbelief and relief swept over me. "You mean she's not your girlfriend?"

Chuckles still in the air, he revealed, "She's my younger cousin, dude. I'm just overprotective of her, which is why you've seen me around her. I'm just making sure she's alright. And yes, I did suspect your feelings for her from the start, hence my caution."

Stunned by this revelation, my friends chimed in. "A plot twist for the ages," Daichi remarked.

Ryuu's gaze bore into me as he continued, "But, man, you've got it bad for her. I never saw it coming."

“You seem like a decent guy, and I trust you won't hurt my little Cherry. Otherwise, you'd be nursing a few broken bones right now," Ryuu's tone was serious yet not devoid of a mischievous edge.

He approached me, wrapping me in an unexpected hug. The world around me spun, emotions mingling in a whirlwind of confusion and realization.

"Go ahead and tell her how you feel, make her yours," he advised, patting my back.

By the way, in case you're hesitating because of the fear of rejection, I'll let you in on a secret," Ryuu leaned in, whispering.

"She likes you too."

With those words, my heart soared. The puzzle pieces finally fell into place.
