Chapter 37:

Sending You My Heart

Our History

Today was quite peaceful for the most part. Except... I tried to ask Mrs. Nichols about the watch but she told me the same lie she told Jack. There’s no way I wouldn’t notice dropping it. Besides, I remember taking it off after going to my room. I have no idea why she would do something like but I don’t mind it. After hearing what she said last night, I feel like she is on my side. Not that I have anything against Ms. Chen.

Weird... I guess I got so used to calling her by her surname that now it feels strange to say her first name even though she is a lot younger than me. Whatever. At least she is better suited to Jack than all the other girls he has ever partied with. Maybe that’s why she is more dangerous. At least for me.

At this moment, my phone started to ring and a message from Jack appeared on the screen.

“Cancel the table reservation. I’ll have dinner with her parents. Come pick me up at her address, when I call you.”

He didn’t need to tell me whom he was referring to. Obviously, it’s none other than Mimi Chen. I looked at the message and couldn’t help but feel a little envious. I bet his future in-laws requested to spend some more time with him. Or rather, they invited Jack with that in mind. They seemed nice, but who knows, I only met them once after all.

I didn’t even know about the existence of Jack a few months ago but now every thought I have has a connection to him one way or another. He is lucky the saying isn’t true, otherwise, he would have hiccups all the time.

After canceling his reservation, I didn’t have anything else to do. Well, until I have to pick him up that is. He could have gone there with his own car to avoid this but I guess he can’t wait to see me again. Just kidding.

At first, I thought it was a little bit too much to order a bouquet on behalf of Jack and ask him to pick it up on his way to the dinner. Even Jack seemed to be surprised when he received my message. However, owing to this, I finally got the recognition of his father as well. It wasn’t my intention actually but when he complained about his son having no manners to just visit them last minute and even daring to go empty-handed, I had to point out that’s not the case. He seemed to appreciate my quick thinking and foresightfulness. So much so, that he even asked me to run some errands for him because he is certain I’m capable of handling them. At least that was how he put it.

I should be happy hearing him praise me at last but I cannot help but think how thick the skin on my face might be to even dare to think about taking one of the most valuable things from him. His son. Or maybe I just lost my mind.

I didn’t think it would take this long to finish every task. When Jack finally called me, I was still in the car on my way home.

“It’s alright. Just ask Carl to take you here. He knows the address,” Jack told me when he finally called me. I heard talking in the background, so I figured he was still at the girl’s house.

“You meant to say to ask him to come and take you home, right?”

“Yeah, but you might as well come, too, since you are already with him.” Since I didn’t say anything, he continued. “Or do you want to walk all the way home?” It’s funny how he called it home as if it was really my home.

“Fine. I’ll tell him to turn around,” I said and hung up. “Carl, we are going to Ms. Chen’s house. The young master called and asked us to pick him up,” I told him.

“We’ll be there in about thirty minutes or so,” he replied calmly and changed lanes.

I wrote a message to Jack telling him the time of our arrival to which he replied with a “can’t wait to see you” and even put a red heart-shaped icon after it. This simple gesture felt so good yet so shocking that I almost looked around if there was anyone who saw it, even though there was only Carl sitting beside me and he was too busy focusing on the road ahead to look at me.

I looked back at the screen of my phone and couldn’t help but touch the little heart with my thumb, almost stroking it as if Jack could feel it. No words can describe how good it feels when the person you like sends you something like this for the first time.

I kept staring at my phone like the sentimental and hopelessly romantic person I am until we arrived at our destination. After Carl stopped the car, I sent a message notifying Jack of our arrival and waited. It shouldn’t take long for him to say goodbye to the family and leave but it felt like ages. I kept looking out the window every few seconds to see if he was coming already or not which made my neck go numb.

Carl is as quiet as always, not saying a word and only speaking when it’s absolutely necessary. He probably does his job better than I do, minding only his own business and doing only what he is told to do.

After a few minutes, I heard the door opening on my side and saw some movement from the corner of my eyes. Its unexpectedness surprised me. But when I turned my head at the sound of the door opening, I was surprised even more.

The person in front of me was Ms. Chen and not Jack, who I was expecting.
