The First Day

On a normal, sunny day, a fifteen year old freshman at Akiyama High named Suzuki Makoto was on his way to his first day of school. 'I gotta try to be at least a bit more social this year,' Makoto thought as he walked to class. 'Well, hopefully the students aren't all masters at basketball or something like that, because that would make it even harder to talk to them!' he thought.

"Good morning, everyone!" the teacher said.
"Morning~" everyone replies.
'I can do this, I can do this, I can talk to people this year, I CAN DO THIS!!!!!!' Makoto thought as he tried to make himself feel good about talking to people while working on his self-esteem. 'I can be like Ryuu in Battle of the Gods season five when he's finally able to get over his fear of his friends turning on him!! I CAN DO THIS!!!!' For context, Battle of the Gods is his favorite anime. It's about a twenty year old Kung-fu master named Ryuu and his friends who fight the Great Abyss Master to save the world and uphold justice. Makoto kept thinking about this until he heard the teacher say thus: "Suzuki Makoto, can you stand up and introduce yourself?"
"Uh, um, yes, Teacher," Makoto said, slightly unsure of himself. He went to stand in front of the class, and said: "Hi, everyone. I'm Suzuki Makoto, and I hope we can all get along."
But, just as he finished saying this, he noticed a girl he really liked was sitting in the row just in front of him. Her name was Asahina Yui, and she had always said that she didn't want a guy who was a show-off, yet who was pretty strong. That was exactly why Makoto wanted to be more confident this year, to show Yui that he was able to be her date. But, he didn't think that he was tough enough for her last year, so he never asked her out.

'How is she in every school I go to???' he thought when he noticed her. 'Ever since the start of middle school, I've always seen her everywhere I go!!' Then, Makoto noticed her smile at him, and he tried his best to smile back.
"Thank you, Suzuki Makoto." the teacher said, snapping him back to reality.
"Uh, well, I'll um, go back to my seat, then..." Makoto said, and as he said this, he got quieter. Then, classes started with the usual; math, science, and such.

Later, after school...

"I still couldn't talk to her..." Makoto said with a sigh. "I really thought I was gonna be able to ask her this year... huh?" Makoto stopped and looked down at the crosswalk. There, on the road, he saw a small pendant with an oriental dragon carved onto it.
'What is this? And why is it out here on the road?' Makoto wondered. It looked like it was made of gold, yet it was as light as plastic. 'Is this a toy or something?' Makoto wondered.
Then, out of nowhere, Makoto heard the sound of a vehicle moving, and when he turned, he saw...
A truck coming towards him. At full speed.
"AH!! Stop the truck!!!!" he shouted in terror. The driver noticed, but just as the truck was going to hit him, a bright light, brighter than the sunrise, bursts out of the pendant.
"It's too bright, I can't see anything!!" Makoto shouted.
Then, just at that moment...
Something happened.
Something that Makoto would never have expected.
