Chapter 238:

Class Change

Museworld

It felt better stepping back out into Everfair’s world now that they were properly dressed for the setting.

Katie was today, if not always, an adventurer. Her leather armor and battle skirt suited her so surprisingly well it looked like the kind of thing she should’ve begun this journey with. Just above her tall leather boots, the hilt of a simple and sturdy rapier poked out from its sheath- already her most prized possession in this material world. She was suitably heroic for the quest she’d just been assigned- just by looking in her eyes one could be confident she’d complete it.

Frankie was a thief.

A thief, a rogue, a trickster- call it what you may, she felt it fitting to her mischievous roots. The light “armor” she’d picked was a little more embarrassing than what she’d usually choose to wear, but it was excellent for the heat, and a dark green hooded cape on her back still kept her somewhat modest, along with providing anonymity if she so desired it. Wanting to stay relatively unweighted anyway, she only took but one small weapon from the Royal armory, that being little more than a knife- though, for a knife, the thing was quite comically huge. She liked the reliability of a single weapon, even if the image of a dual-wielding rogue was tempting to her.

“What do we do first?” She asked the girl carrying all their stuff. Katie dug the parchment from their misfitting travel bag and opened it. While the short sandy document didn’t quite roll out onto the ground and down the road, the things that were written on it were a touch more grandiose than they had been imagining.

(Almost no space was provided.)

Frankie seized the scroll and threw it to the road.

“What the hell is this?! The man wants us to be his freaking lackeys? This is pointless busywork!”

Katie jostled the heavy bag on her shoulder.

“Lot of money, though.”

“We have a lot of money!”

“Aw, come on!” She lightly shoved her little sister. “I’m positive it’ll be fun.”

“What about this looks “fun” to you? It’s work!”

“So what if it is? Thanks to this, we’ll get to see more of this park than any we’ve been to yet, right?”

“Maybe that’s a good thing for you… look, I like this place, but can you really tell me we’re supposed to-“

In the middle of her agonized rant, Frankie had turned her eyes from the sky back to her sister, who looked strangely embarrassed and a little worried.

“I… hope you’re not unhappy. I really like this place.”

Frankie signed, putting her palm on her face.

“I… I like it too. I’m sorry. I just-“

“I know… it won’t be easy. But it’ll make a lot of memories, yeah?”

“I’m not so sure I need any more of those…” Frankie started to walk off back to the markets. “But if we’re already here… might as well.”

Katie smiled behind her.
