Chapter 10:

Cara's life (2)

Playing With Fire

It had been some years since Shane's mother had died. A lot of things had changed in the household: Melissa had become the maid, Shane had become cruel because of his father's influence, and Cara had grown up to be a beautiful child whom a lot of people admired.

One September, when Cara was seven years old, there was a party to which a lot of people had been invited. Among them was the Chikami family, too.

Now the Chikami family's head, Eboshi Chikami, had beef with David Kole and they did not get along so well with each other. She was mad at David because he had married Sydney when Eboshi and David were the ones who were dating each other for a while.

The Chikami family had only one child. His name was Yuri. Yuri was ten years old at that time and he was a fine child.

Cara quietly sat on a chair the entire time the people enjoyed themselves. She was told she was too young to enjoy something as lively as parties which were meant to be only enjoyed by adults.

On the other hand, Yuri Chikami was the center of attention for the kids. However, there was someone who was jealous of that. His name was Jason Pratt. He was a bit younger than Yuri and he could not understand why all the girls were flocking around him. This did not go unnoticed by Yuri, though.

"Hey, Jason," Yuri said to Jason as he walked towards him.

"Hey," he said with a straight face.

"Are you sick?," Yuri asked.

"No, I'm not sick," he said.

"Then why do you look so sour?," he asked.

"I'm jealous," he said.

"Of whom?," Yuri asked.

"Of you," Jason answered, looking at the ground to hide his face.

"Me?! Why?," Yuri said, laughing.

"Because you're getting all the girls!," Jason said.

"Oh, I'm sorry! I didn't actually want that to happen," Yuri apologetically said.

Jason nodded.

"I actually want the attention of only one girl," Yuri suddenly said.

"Which girl?," Jason asked.

"That one over there," he said as he pointed towards Cara.

Suddenly, Jason's face started to boil. He was furious at Yuri for saying that he wanted Cara's attention. This was because Cara was going to be Jason's future wife and it was on the papers, too.

"What's wrong? You look sour again," Yuri said, as he noticed Jason's expressions.

"Of course, I look sour! That's Cara! She's the one who's gonna marry me in the future!," Jason said.

"What? But we're only kids right now! You can't say stuff like that without thinking things through!," Yuri said.

"You might be a kid but I'm not!," Jason said as he walked away from Yuri.

Yuri couldn't understand his words. He directed his gaze towards Cara now. He was going to talk to her. He walked towards her.

"Hello," Yuri said.

Cara looked at him and blushed. Never had someone this beautiful said hi to her without her father telling them to.

"H-hello," Cara said as she stuttered.

"How are you?," Yuri asked.

"I-I'm fine. Thank you," she said.

"My name's Yuri. What's yours?," he asked.

"My n-name is Cara Kole. Nice to m-meet you," she said, her face red.

Across the room, Melissa's eyes that were already glued to Cara, saw Yuri talk to her and she remembered her orders. She was under strict orders not to let anyone talk to Cara and Yuri Chikami was now holding a conversation with her.

Melissa quickly made her way towards the two of them.

"Yuri Chikami, right?," Melissa said.

Yuri turned to look at her. He nodded.

"You need to get away from Cara. You can't talk to her," she said.

"Why?," Yuri asked.

Melissa didn't answer so Yuri looked at Cara for answers. But her face was red and she didn't answer.

Yuri nodded and left Cara alone. He walked away with Melissa. They talked to each other a lot that night.

"Mel, I'm so jealous of you," Cara said to her cousin in the morning when Cara and Melissa were alone at home.

"Why?!," Melissa asked, shocked.

"I don't know. You can do everything that I can't. I can't talk to anyone but the people my dad lets me talk to. But you, Mel, you're different! It's different for you," Cara said.

"Oh, Cara, don't say that! I never wanted you to feel that way. I'm sorry!," Melissa said, a look of apology in her eyes.

Cara nodded as she started to cry.

That night had made Cara realize that she had no control over anything in her life.
