Chapter 3:

Free Them

Tales from the Forbidden Kingdom

With eager anticipation, Saru snatched the training manual, swiftly flipping through its pages until landing on page 3. "Oh, you were absolutely right! Look, there are indeed coordinates mentioned here," Saru exclaimed, their unwavering focus fixed on the direction they needed to proceed. "Our journey will lead us through Arcanis, the captivating capital of this town, renowned far and wide for its esteemed community of immensely skilled magic users." Yuki watched Saru with a beaming smile. "Wow, Saru, your knowledge is truly impressive," she remarked, her admiration evident. Saru gracefully knelt down, retrieving their sword and deftly securing it onto their back. The duo embarked on their path towards the capital, their footsteps filled with purpose. As they made their way into the town, Saru's attention was drawn to a charming tavern. Recognizing Yuki's occasional difficulty with eating, Saru decided to make a thoughtful gesture. "Yuki, why don't we stop by that tavern? I'll get you something delicious to eat," Saru suggested warmly, their concern for Yuki's well-being shining through. Yuki smiled and nodded, still a bit shaken from the earlier encounter. "Let's make haste," she replied, her voice slightly shaky. Saru's reassuring presence brought a sense of calm to her. Yuki blushed as Saru held the door open for her, appreciating the small gesture of chivalry. They entered the cozy tavern and took a seat, waiting for the bartender to attend to them. The older gentleman behind the bar approached Saru and Yuki, ready to take their order. Saru and Yuki glanced at the menu, considering their options. "I'll have the pizza and a beer," Saru stated confidently, his gaze shifting to Yuki. "And what would you like?" Yuki pointed at the menu, her shyness momentarily hindering her ability to speak up. Saru chuckled softly, finding her gestures endearing. "She'll have the chicken and a lemonade," Saru relayed to the bartender with a smile, understanding Yuki's preference. As the bartender walked away to fulfill their order, Saru leaned back in the chair, a playful glint in their eyes. "Chicken and lemonade, huh? That's cute, but a bit basic," Saru teased gently, lightheartedly poking fun at Yuki's choice. Yuki blushed at the remark, playfully nudging Saru's arm. "Well, I happen to like what I like," she replied, her voice filled with mock defensiveness. They shared a brief moment of laughter, enjoying each other's company in the cozy ambiance of the tavern, their earlier encounter fading into the background. After their meal, Saru felt a sense of determination to learn more about the kingdom and its affairs. They stood up and started walking around the tavern, searching for information. A group of former slaves who had recently broken free caught Saru's attention, eagerly waving him over. Saru approached them, observing their hopeful expressions. "Yes?" Saru inquired, acknowledging their desire for work. The slaves were grateful for the attention and spoke up, their voices filled with determination. "We want work. We're willing to do anything, even hard labor." Saru paused, deep in thought, considering their request. "I can take you with me, but I must warn you, the tasks we undertake can be dangerous," Saru responded, his gaze filled with a mix of caution and determination. The slaves lined up, ready to follow Saru's lead. "Alright, listen up," Saru addressed them, his voice firm yet compassionate. "As long as you're under my care, you don't have to huddle up like that. I despise the slave market in this town, and I can't wait until I free everyone," Saru declared, their resolve shining through. The former slaves felt a glimmer of hope as they joined Saru's group, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. With newfound purpose, Saru led the way, determined to make a difference and bring freedom to those in need.
