Chapter 14:

Body Found

The Marionettist

Suddenly the bad call came. A new body appeared. Patricia's stomach dropped and she got angry. With a slow step forward, she approached their bulletin board and with her left hand tore off a piece of paper on which the word "missing" was written under the photo of Viktoria Samson. She was staring at the floor while crumbling it at the level of her head. She looked after Marek and threw it in the trash.

They both stood silently without saying a word, after ten seconds of staring at him, she turned her gaze away from Marek and aimed to sit on the couch. Patricia buried her face in her right palm. She began to feel guilty about the day off. While she was enjoying her time yesterday, the girl died. Marek tried to comfort her.

He stretched out his hand to her, but she stopped him. “No, don't touch me now! Go away... take the car keys,... please." He obeyed her. After slamming the door behind her, her eyes fell on a smiling photo of Victoria pinned to the bulletin board. She approached her, holding her elbows, she had a very bad feeling. One of the policemen opened the door and told her that Marek was already waiting for her, that she should go to him.

A passer-by found Victoria at the edge of the forest. She was tied to a tree. Body parts were missing due to high animal activity. They searched for her right arm and left leg. This was the first time she had seen a dead body in this specific case. No emotions were visible on her. She behaved professionally, she didn't want to show it to the people around her.

She got distracted by the age of the victim, she only went to high school. An even greater sense of guilt began to wash over her. Marek looked at Patricia but was afraid to say anything. He knew she would scold him.

Stefan appeared there two minutes after them. He introduced himself to Patricia. They had heard of each other but had never met. The doctor could tell immediately from the stain that she had been strangled with a satin scarf that was lying close to the victim's body. As in previous cases, she was raped and tortured.

The police did their job, they looked for evidence and secured the place. As before, they found nothing. Marek immediately called his colleagues who were following our four suspects. They didn't see anything that looked suspicious. The case stood on the same level as before and did not move.

After arranging the bureaucracy around it, they returned back to the station. All they could do now was wait for the pathology results. Patricia didn't talk to Marek at all. He just watched sadly from afar, but he understood her feelings and also preferred to remain silent. This same scenario played out all day until they reached home. She just entered the bathroom and later disappeared into her bedroom.

The next day she didn't even leave her room. The dinner, which was cooked by Marek, remained untouched until the next morning. Even in the morning, it was very quiet. It was even worse at the station. She avoided him all day. When the early evening came, she changed back to "Goldilocks".

She took the secret microphone and the surveillance device. She just gave Marek a look and started with the "Goldilocks mission". Tonight she was walking through the city center around the river. Unfortunately, the great possibility of "being kidnapped" came, as the place of the victim was empty again.

On one side of the river, Marek hissed. His task was to catch the killer, and on the other side, two policemen were hiding for Patricia's protection. After spending two hours walking in the chill, overcast weather, their attention was caught by a dark person. Everyone immediately warned Patricia. She played her role very well. She didn't show that she already knew about the mysterious man.

They couldn't see his face. He was dressed all in black, with a scarf over his face and a hood on his head. Everyone was waiting to see what he would do. "Goldilocks" went to cross the bridge and the man approached her with a quick step. Marek and the policemen were alerted, ready to intervene.

The stranger was given an opportunity and took advantage of it. He tried to grab her. She was ready and elbowed him in the neck. At first, he took a step back but pulled out his knife. He attacked her again. She blocked him with her purse. He began to fight furiously with the knife. She could only defend herself and retreat.

The policemen were already running to help her. With a step back and a small leap to the side, there was a momentary opportunity for her to attack him. She punched that guy in the stomach. He touched with his hand that place. He dropped the knife and jumped after Patricia. He grabbed her shoulders and they started struggling.

She too was holding onto the collar of his shirt. He was strong and she was lightweight, he picked her up with no problem and tried to throw her over the railing of the bridge. She lost her stability and hit the ribs on her left side. The pain forced her to let go of his clothes.

She slipped out of his hands. At the last moment, she managed to grab the railings with her left hand. That one-jerk move caused her even more pain. She probably had broken ribs on the left side of her torso.

The police were too slow, it happened so fast, that they almost didn't make it to the bridge. Marek went straight after the attacker, but he raised his knife and wanted to attack Marek. He jumped to his side. The stranger wanted to escape, but Marek ran after him.

The remaining two policemen behaved unreasonably and clumsily. They did not fulfill their job, which was still to protect "Goldilocks". Instead of rescuing Patricia, they also ran after the attacker.

Marek quickly realized that the two policemen were running away with him. He made a decision. He had to save Patricia. He turned on his heel and rushed between the two idiots who had forgotten their task back to Patricia. They were still young and inexperienced. Maybe that was the main problem.

Even though Patricia tried to grab the railings with her other hand, she couldn't swing her body enough because of the pain. She was losing the feeling and strength in her left hand. The pain was increasing and her aching arm was too weak to support her body weight. At the last moment, Marek grabbed her by the dress around her waist and pulled her up with all his strength. He used too much force and she flew through the railing and fell on top of him.

When he finally opened his eyes, Patricia was glued to him and he couldn't breathe properly. Patricia also slowly opened her eyes. Her face was three centimeters from Marek's nose. She was terrified, and when Marek tried to sit up, she only hung her arms around his neck more. He held her so that she felt safe. She hugged him. He gave her a kiss on the forehead.

After five minutes the idiots returned. The attacker successfully managed to escape. The officers asked Patricia if she was okay and if she needed help. She couldn't contain her sarcasm. "But, I'm fine! I was just hanging here on the bridge. Not a problem! I had enough time to order one Hawaii pizza with pineapple and ham.
I think the import would be here much earlier than you two and maybe we'd chat a bit so I wouldn't get bored. You two are crowned idiots! What did you get wrong about the PROTECT me task?! Marek is in better physical condition for arresting and could have caught him. There were two of you and you let him escape. This is a great shame, and you can answer to the boss tomorrow.”

Marek was also startled along with those poor idiots. But they deserved to be reprimanded. At least one of them called an ambulance. Patricia may have broken ribs, so she needed medical attention. They came out pretty quickly. Doctors from the ambulance took her to the hospital for an X-ray of the torso. Luckily they were only bruised but not broken.
