Chapter 19:

Nightmarish surprise

The Marionettist

Marek was finally released. Patricia asked the police captain to restrain Marek from this event. She knew that she had to go through this alone, if he was on the loose, he would sabotage the entire event just out of fear for her.

She came to pick him up from the police station. He was very angry with her. He was forced to sit behind the bars the whole time, worrying about her. Of course, he loved her, in such a situation, he won't allow his girlfriend to deliberately put herself in danger.

Patricia arrived in front of the station in his black car. He was surprised. He sat on the seat of the "fellow passenger". “Since when do you have a driver's license?” She smiled and stepped on the gas. "Who said I have one?" Of course, she was just joking, but Marek thought she was dead serious.

All the while he was clinging to his belt and death was in his eyes. Finally, when she parked the car in front of her apartment building, Marek got out of the car. He knelt on the ground, grateful and happy to have survived the hellish ride.

Patricia just laughed. “Didn't I tell you it was just a joke?” He just turned his head behind her and glared. "What? Was that just a joke? I thought it was the end of me. You...!” He jumped to his feet and grabbed her in his arms. They chased each other up the stairs until they reached the door. Well, just like little children.

Patricia took out the key, showed it to Marek, and unlocked it. He lifted her in his arms and crossed the threshold with her. A short corridor with a mirror, hangers to the right of the entrance door, and two doors to the bathroom and toilet on the left. A furry little rug on the stone ground. She had her own study with a large wardrobe, a bedroom, a living room, and a kitchen. The apartment was too big for her alone.

After taking off his shoes, Marek held Patricia and backed up until they reached the bed. In over an hour, they were lounging and cuddling. Time didn't matter, even though it was late they decided to throw themselves in the tub together.

Patricia owned a huge bathtub that could fit both of them. Marek sat down first and then Patricia next to him. She leaned her back against his shoulder and they enjoyed relaxing in the hot water.

He held her tightly around her shoulders and swore to himself that he would protect her forever. They kissed and cuddled. They even played with each other's noses. Serious tension was building between them and they disappeared into the bedroom for the rest of the evening.

Patricia returned to the sleepy little SPA town, but only for a visit. She was herself, no disguise. She fell in love with this place and, of course, Marek lived here in this wonderful environment. She got on the bus and was taken to the street where Marek's apartment was located.

He was still at work, so Patricia wanted to wait for him at his house. She still had the keys after all. Patricia picked up the phone and rang Marek to buy something to eat on the way home. He was surprised that she came back so soon, even though he finished late today.

Patricia didn't mind, she answered him, only that she wanted to surprise him. When Marek finally got home and parked the car, something was strange around his apartment. He looked up from below and saw no sign of any light. Suddenly his heart clenched and his stomach tightened.

He ran up the stairs and found the door to his apartment open again. He drew his gun and slowly walked inside. All the while he hoped it was just a joke on Patricia's part. Marek slowly opened the door with his right hand and kept pointing forward with his left. No one was inside, but he immediately saw that this was no joke.

The apartment was all trashed. He became enraged and started running from room to room, but Patricia was nowhere to be found. He noticed a large pool of blood on the ground. It broke him instantly. "Is she really no longer alive?" he whimpered. That question was the first thing that popped into his mind. This couldn't be true?!

The gun fell from his hand and he slid to the floor. The heart was squeezed between fear and frustration. He failed to protect her. Marek's mind was tormented that he might soon find her soulless dead body. He was in an unremovable shock. He just sat there for ten minutes.

A lot of thoughts raced through his head. He thought, planned how he would find her and if he would find her still alive. But what can he do now? He had no idea where the kidnapper is keeping her and what he was doing with her now.

He felt dizzy as soon, as he got up, maybe he should have had a drink, but he collapsed from the stress. He couldn't think at the same time. He lay on the ground for about half an hour, so he dug out his cell phone and called the guys from the police station because he was unable to do anything else.

As soon as his colleagues learned what had happened, the entire team immediately went to his apartment to help him. Even Stefan appeared between the doors. They examined everything at the crime scene, but as Marek expected, they again found nothing. Just one little thing. Nicely wrapped gift from Patricia.

They took Marek to the police station and left him sleeping on the couch in his office. Of course, he couldn't go back to his apartment for now, since it had become a crime scene. Marek was lying on the sofa with his eyes open and fixed on the ceiling.

A short blanket was draped over his torso and his right hand rested on his forehead. He had one foot on the ground. He was sure he couldn't sleep until he found Patricia or her body appeared. For now, he was focused on only one thing, and that was to find her.

He spent a week thoroughly checking the people in the city. No one was missing, everyone was at home. Even the old suspects were living a happily ever after. Marek fell into severe depression. He had to be given sedatives.

He sat on the couch with Patricia's photo in both hands and stared at her non-stop for several hours. There was that unwrapped gift on the table next to him. Sometimes tears welled up in his eyes, but he did not cry. He stopped eating properly only when he really had to or someone forced him. He became emaciated and weakened.

The superior tried several times to withdraw him from the case, forbidding him to investigate and interfere in it, since it had become personal. But he didn't have the heart to do it when Marek started desperately begging him not to do it.

Marek decided to take a shower late in the evening. He stood for a long time in the shower under running water. It flowed slowly down his once well-formed body. He leaned on the wall in front of him with both elbows and his mind was far away by Patricia.

His head was hanging down and his eyes were closed. He wished he'd been in the apartment when she needed him, when it happened. He blamed himself for being so late. He raised his head and began to imagine that she was with him.

She walked naked into his shower. She wrapped her arms around his waist and chest from behind and just hugged him. He even imagined and felt her tiptoe to lift her body and kiss his neck. He opened his eyes and leaned his forehead against the wall and slowly sank to his knees. He must find her at any cost!
