Chapter 7:

Act 7

Emilia and the Red Shoes

I thought I had died, but I finally woke up. The first thing I saw was a beautiful and elegant nurse, all smiles, and a place completely different from what I was used to, as always happened when I woke up. But this time it seemed too different; the room was all white and well lit, it felt like I was in heaven.

"Emilia! I'm so glad you're awake! Congratulations! You're finally completely cured!" the cheerful nurse said.

"Cured? What do you mean?" I was in shock; I had just woken up, didn't know where I was, my mind was confused, and suddenly a woman was telling me that I was cured.

"Yes, you're free from your illness; you can leave the hospital. We have completed the treatment. Your reckless act of administering a higher dose than you needed caused us quite a bit of trouble, which added a few more years to your treatment, but we're happy that you're alive and fully cured."

She said so many things that it was difficult to understand everything; I heard her, but my brain processed it later.

The nurse seemed very young and full of energy; she looked around, not knowing what to do, and said, "Well, stay here for a moment; I'll be back to talk to you. I have a gift for you."

It was great news to know that I was healed. I realized that my head was hurting; the memories were all jumbled up, it was very different from the other times I was used to, but at least I could finally leave the hospital and fulfill my dream. I would be able to reunite with Marco and the others, but where were they?

A shiver ran down my spine; my hand was cold as I wondered, "Where are they?"

The nurse was probably on her way to report my condition to the doctor in charge. I couldn't wait for her to come back. So I began to slowly get out of the machine; I didn't have the strength to move, but I had to find something inside of me.

I fell to the ground and began to crawl. My legs were weak and strange after years of not using them. I used a nearby bench to help me up and frantically left my room.

The hospital was chaotic, the hallways crowded with people. I had to keep dodging with the little strength I had, seeing many strange things, full of lights and sounds I couldn't describe. Screens that looked like televisions but were floating, people wearing glasses with lights. Languages I had never heard before and letters I didn't understand. The further I walked, the more desperate I became. Everyone seemed to be busy, moving back and forth. I saw several robots carrying things, and these robots had Mauricio's name on them.

I didn't understand what was happening around me, what the others were doing, and I had no idea where my friends could be.

Then I stopped walking when I reached an empty corridor with an iron bar and a large glass window that covered the entire corridor as if it were a suspended bridge.

I leaned against the bar and had a beautiful view of the city. It was huge, full of huge buildings, and especially lights everywhere. There were so many things flashing everywhere. Everything had changed.

That's when I realized I was probably way ahead of my time. Many, many years ahead. I couldn't help it; I cried as I slowly remembered the past, everything that had happened, my friends, but most of all I remembered Marco and that my last words had been an argument. If I had known that these would be my last moments with them, I wouldn't have been angry with anyone.

I knew they were all dead and I was alone.

Just when I was healed.
