Chapter 6:

case close

Coffee, sugar and love

"We'll have to wait for the lab results," the inspector interrupted us

"but im dying to know where they found some traces of poison."radia said but eventually give up

Thirty minutes later

The inspector received a phone call and read aloud the results. "There are traces of potassium cyanide at the cups handle as well as the tissue papers used."

"Is it possible that the poison is not in the coffee, but in the donut itself or other objects that the victim touched with?" I thought and wondered. "Can you please enumerate the items that underwent testing?"

The inspector nodded and began to list out the items that had been tested. "We tested 4 cups, 4 left over donut, crumpled tissue and a set of fork and knife"

I raised an eyebrow in curiosity and asked if there were any other items that might have come in contact with the victim. The inspector shook his head and replied that those were the only items they had tested.

“One of the item is missing”radia said

“The coffee creamer”

Radia took three donuts and handed them to the girls, offering them up with a smile on her face. “With the inspector’s permission, you can have some of these “she said, trying to lighten the atmosphere in the room.

The girls stared at Radia with disdain and one of them spoke up, "You want us to eat while we're grieving for our friend? How insensitive can you be?"

Radia's smile faded as she saw the look on their faces, but she quickly recovered her composure and replied, “This will reveal who among you three poisoned the victim. I made these donuts myself, actually."

"Eat these donuts and we'll know who the suspect is?" The blonde girl asked with skepticism. "Is it that easy?"

Radia nodded and said, "That's right. Eating these donuts is an easy task, and I can assure you there's no poison in them." She added with a wink.

The girls still seemed hesitant to eat the donuts, but the inspector spoke up and said, "Don't be afraid. Eating these donuts is a simple task. It will help us in our investigation and help determine which one of you is the suspect."

"The girls started taking a bite out of the donuts, surprising everyone with how quickly they finished their surprise snack, with one exception. One of the girls only ate half of her donut, leaving the rest untouched.

Radia leaned closer to the girl and asked with a concerned expression, "What's wrong miss?"

The brown haired girl shrugged and said, "I guess I wasn't that hungry. I didn't want to eat the entire donut."

"Not eating your donut shows your guilt," Radia said, narrowing her eyes at the girl. "Are you trying to hide something?"

The red-haired girl stood up in defense of her friend and said, "If Jessie really had the poison on her hands, shouldn't it have been detected on the knife and fork she had used? But there's no such thing found!"

I turned to the inspector, who nodded in agreement. "That's correct," he stated. "We searched the room and her personal items, but we didn't find any traces of poison on Jessie's knife and fork."

"It could be that she wiped it out using the tissue paper," I suggested, my theory made sense, but would it hold up to the inspector's scrutiny? I held my breath, waiting for his response.

"No one suspects her of removing traces of poison on the utensils as if she were cleaning those," radia replied confidently. The inspector seemed to consider what I had said, but he wasn't convinced yet. He seemed to be thinking hard about something, and I waited patiently for his next move.

The blonde-haired girl spoke up. "Enough with the false accusations," she said forcefully. "How can you two be so sure? How can Jessie have passed the poison to Hiro? Where's your evidence?"

The red-haired girl and I stayed silent, waiting for the inspector to answer. We had to be careful not to give away our own suspicions.

"The cream sachet," Radia said as she walked over to the nearest bin. Jessie volunteered to get the creamer, and the moment Hiro touched it, his death warrant had been signed."

However, the brown-haired girl quickly countered, "But there's no poison found in Hiro's coffee!"

The inspector thought for a moment and said, "The poison is not in the creamer but on the cream sachet."

"As for evidence," I added, "Jessie still might have it. All of the items on the table were examined except for that one thing."

The girls remained silent as they all thought about what I had said.

But then, radia spoke up and said, "We can check for every trash bin here in the cafe, but if there's no sachet to be found, we know where it might be."

"Miss, can we-" The inspector began to ask, but the brown-haired girl cut him off with a sharp tone in her voice.

"There's no need to," she said coldly and fell to her knees. Her friends' eyes widened in disbelief

"If Hiro can't be mine then no one else can," the girl declared and laughed hysterically “so, I killed him…”

The blonde-haired girl slapped her friend across the face, then gently hugged her

"Don't say that… Hiro loves you only. In order for us to keep our friendship, Hiro rejected us all for the sake of our friendship."

Jessie was surprised by her response and began to cry like a child filled with guilt and sadness.

"I'm sorry Hiro," Jessie whispering between her sobs, "please come back."

I looked at her in concern as she wept, a deep pain in her eyes. I wanted to comfort her, but I wasn't sure how to approach her.

I stood there, not knowing what to say, as Jessie continued to cry. The blonde-haired girl held her close and soothed her.

Although her love for Hiro wasn't enough to justify her actions, it was clear that she was truly remorseful for what she had done.

The girls all gathered around Jessie and comforted her, trying to make her feel better. It was clear that they felt sorry for her and understood her situation, even if her actions couldn't be forgiven

After a few moments of silence, the inspector finally spoke up, "I want to thank you all for your help in solving this case. I promise to take care of everything from here on out."

Radia, who had been standing quietly in the corner, suddenly walked away without saying a word. I followed her

I made my way to the lounge area, hoping to find her. I saw her sleeping in the couch, her glasses were no longer on

She seemed very tired and her breaths were shallow. "How could someone sleep so fast?" I thought and gently woke her up.

"Radio," I whispered, "are you okay?"

Radio opened her eyes slowly and blinked a few times as if she had been sleeping for a long time.

"I'm okay, Errol," she said with a small smile. "Just a little tired, that's all."

"You scared me there for a second," I replied. "I thought something might be wrong."

I was surprised at how her expression changed so quickly. It was as if she was a completely different person just a moment ago.

I remembered what Luca had said to me earlier, "Look after Radia."

"Do you want to walk home?"

She was silent for a moment, and then she said, "Yes, please."

I nodded and started to walk with her. The sun was setting and the sky was getting darker. I wanted to make sure that Radia got home safely.

As we made our way home, Radia seemed lost in thought. She wasn't saying much, was it because she still thinking about what had happened earlier?

As we continued home on my bicycles, I wondered if Radia was just acting cool earlier. Was she forcing herself to be strong while I was in despair, not knowing what to do?
