Chapter 1:

You are enough

You are enough

“I almost had him!”

I heard a girl’s voice while I was in a coma. According to my nurse, I was apparently hit by a massive truck in the middle of the 4 way road. It was seemingly a fatal situation but I have no recollection of it at all.

“You are lucky!”

My nurse always says to me as she checks my vitals.

“Ummm…yeah…”

I don't know what is the right word to say back every single day. Because number one, I have no memory at all, plus my body hurts. And number two, a girl appears in my dream every night. She always has her smile on looking at me as if I’m some kind of exhibition.

“You’ll be mine soon!”

The phrase ends my dream every night since I’ve been hospitalized.

A couple tiktoking sounds goes by and it’s 9am. My nurse is here again for daily check up.

“Had a good sleep last night?”

“Yeah, had better nights”

I replied my nurse but she seemed like she didn’t really care about what I said. I thought that she’d be more responsive since she seems concerned about me. I looked into her eyes to see if she had caught what I’ve said but her eyes had no light reflecting, almost like a dead fish’s eye…maybe she has a lot on her mind. After all, we’re all just humans trying to live to our fullest.

My nurse tries to be generous toward me but she never looks into my eyes. I always brush it off thinking that communication with patient is simply a portion of her job

The nurse is checking thoroughly at everything that I’m hooked up to.

“Let’s have today’s physical therapy on the roof at night. Your fragile skin will appreciate the night breeze instead of sun rays. Does that sound good?”

“Sure… is that like a new approach that hospitals take nowadays?”

“Yes! It’s important for patients to gradually develop themselves to the outside air but daytime is detrimental for a fragile body. And who doesn’t like the night breeze?”

“Yeah…I guess so. I’ll follow whatever you say.”

More time went by and night time came around. I’m on my cane because the way to the rooftop does not provide an elevator, so I cannot use my wheelchair. I felt annoyed and irritated because climbing up stairs with a cane was way harder than I'd expected. I turned the knob of the exit door and opened slightly but…

*Bang!

I hadn’t noticed how weak I was and the wind took the door from my grip.

“There you are…remember the night we met up?” The nurse bluntly asks.

“Huh? I don’t know…at the hospital I guess? I thought we’re doing physical therapy”

“You even ran in front of the truck for me.”

“For you?”

“Here, take my hand. I will help you up here.”

The nurse climbed on the ledge and started pulling me up on it. My weak body just obeyed her and I was also on the edge of the building. The hospital must be over 10 stories tall because the people beneath us were the size of an ant. My legs were wobbling and my only support was the nurse’s hand.

“Do you recognize the busy street?“

The headlight of the car, truck honking, and the girl I was chasing in front of me…

“Ah!” A throbbing headache rushes through my brain.

“Good, good. Now you remember me!”

My life after my parent’s death, leaving me with their debt. Don’t know how to pay it off so I’ve only been working minimum wage. But I’ve not been eating right because all the money goes toward paying off the debt. Nobody is around to help me nor care about my existence. Nobody to say that they’ll help me out. Nobody to say I’m good enough…

“Are you ok, sir?”

A girl appeared on my break from the job. The moment she looked into me. I felt annoyed. After a while of nobody caring for me, I’ve lost all sense of human emotion.

“Sir you are enough. Sometimes life is tough but you’ll get there.”

I dropped my cigarette that I’ve just lit. She sees me.

“You don’t seem ok but are you alright sir? Why don’t we meet at the 4 way road up the street?”

My memory came back and I’m looking at my angel that I thought I lost in a truck incident.

I looked at her hand then her clothes. It was not the nurse’s clothes anymore. The exact white one piece dress I saw back then.

“Let’s go into the night together.”

As we were falling to the ground, I heard one last word from her.

“Thanatos will save us.”
