Chapter 4:

Crash

Vampire Lanterns

Yan sitting in the backseat with one of the girls leaning with both hands on the backrest looking back at the cabin with the two stalkers. Veiled in the darkness only their small clouds of condensing breath emerging from time to time from the mouths illuminated by the moon was seen by him.
He couldn't catch his own breath back. He was still in full panic mode but a sense of relief slowly flooded his body. He needed to recuperate his thoughts to start to ask questions. The girls from work were all serious and silent.
They needed to get out of this forest as soon as possible. Behind the wheel clutching it, sat the blond with green eyes and Yan was positioned right behind her. The other woman in the passenger seat with red hair and caramel-brown eyes was nervously glancing into the mirror to check if they were being pursued. The brunette with blue eyes was the same as Yan leaned against the backrest hypnotizing the rear end of the car.
Angela speeded with the car slowly losing control. The serpentins were getting too much for her to handle. To exit the mountains they had to drive through multiple of those. The car was sliding on the iced road from side to side worrying the rest of the crew inside.

Despite complaints from the girl next to Yan... Elena, Angela didn't slow down, even when Danica, the red-haired girl started to bang on the panel. They all were panicking, but Angela was determined to escape as far as possible with Yan finally in her clutches.
It wasn't long till she lost control and flew from the road into the dark abyss of the woods. The impact of the car smashing sideways into one of the trees echoed through the whole forest. It even reached the places where the cabin was.
Luka transformed immediately and took Mirko on his back for a ride. They were worried that Demyan's human form was dead and their plan to save Petrona would go up in flames. Luka followed the trail of blood mixed with gasoline. They were dreading the sight which was awaiting them.

Meanwhile, Yan woke up into a complete silence. With a slight concussion, Yan felt how a stream of warm liquid was flowing slowly down his forehead. He touched his head, looked at his hand and a coppery scent was emanating from it. It was his blood.
Angela woke up as the second and looked around. The airbags saved her from getting seriously injured. Both Danica and Elena weren't that lucky. Their side took the most damage. A quiet whining began to fill up the car.
It came from Elena, the brunette who sat next to Yan... She had almost all her bones broken and twisted in an inhumane manner and inner bleeding. Danica was also pretty beaten up, but much luckier.
Angela didn't want to lose the chance and jumped out of the car. She proceeded to open the jammed door on Yan's side at first with her bare hands, but when that didn't work, she took a stick and pried it out.
Firstly, she checked on Yan's injuries and then when she was sure he was mostly okay, she pulled him outside. Yan was disoriented and confused initially as she was dragging him behind her.
He remembered the girls and tried to go back but Angela didn't listen. She told him to forget about them, that they will die soon anyway. Yan couldn't believe what he heard and still kept being stubborn. "At least we should try to save them. We have to!"
Angela snapped at him. "If we go back, your stalkers will find and kill us! They will be soon goners. They would want us to escape... Trust me! COME!" She pulled him along again. Yan's heart was torn, but she was probably right. A last glance and then he stopped to protest and followed her into the dark woods.

Not long after, Luka and Mirko arrived on the scene of the accident. One side of the car was wrecked and when they looked inside a gruesome sight awaited them. Elena was barely alive and Danica was drenched in blood crying still buckled up in her seat.
Luka pushed his head inside from the back to check if Demyan was inside. Mirko followed soon after from the driver's side. Luka scanned the whole car and his eyes met with Danica. As soon, as Danica spotted the werewolf with his handler, she started to get hysterical and her cries changed into screams.
Luka was sniffing around to pick up Demyan's scent. He knew he was alive and he had to find him. Mirko was fixated more by the girls. He felt pity and bad for their situation. He sighed. Mirko couldn't leave them to their fate, which was death.
He pointed that out to Luka. He huffed and puffed and changed into his human form. Danica was witnessing the whole thing and stopped to scream. Now just looking at them and waiting for whatever was coming for her.
Mirko climbed inside next to her and put down his hood revealing his handsome face to her. "Don't worry, I won't hurt you. I want to help you and your friend. Will be that okay?" Danica slightly nodded.
He unbuckled her seatbelt and stretched out his hand to help her out. Everything was hurting Danica, but she finally was out of that damn car. She looked back at her friend and then at Luka.
Mirko turned to him. "What's wrong? Why aren't you helping her?!" Luka sighed heavily. "I can sense it's too late for her. She probably didn't even have a chance to begin with. Her body is too damaged to survive long."
After hearing Luka's ordeal, Danica stretched out her hands towards her best friend from childhood and began to cry. How could that be possible? Luka continued. "We should go. We can't do anything for her anymore..."

Mirko silently helped Danica up on her feet. He felt very bad for her and looked up to reflect.
Something in the sky caught his attention.
