Chapter 3:

Revenge

The Virus

I woke up early in the morning or it was that I couldn't sleep most of the time at night. I had slept on a sofa and Hardik slept on the other one. As I sat on the sofa, yawning and rubbing my right eye, I looked at Hardik. But, he wasn't there on his sofa but before I panicked I looked down and guess what? He had rolled over and was sleeping soundly on the floor. I stood up and went to bathroom to wash my face. I came back and kicked him to wake him up. He didn't. He just laid there, sleeping. Then, I looked at the time, it was slightly above 9:35 A.M. the number 5 and 6 on the clock was covered with blood, obviously, it was of the zombie. It's dead body was still there where I hit it, then I felt how disgusting it was to sleep right there, in the same room. It's blood was now drained out everywhere covering a pie area on a floor of white tiles.

Then, Hardik woke up, rubbing his eyes, then, opening them wide enough to see me and his  surrounding. He was not even shocked to see that he had rolled over on the floor. It was like that he remembers sleeping on the floor. Yup, he was kinda dumb!

After he was fully conscious, we started collecting all supplies that were available in the apartment. In the end, we only got food for almost four days and the water in the fridge would have lasted at least three days. We got worried. Both of us definitely didn't had enough courage which is required to step out in the havoc. We knocked the topic off and decided to think of a plan in the next few days while our supplies lasted.

I took two glasses of water in the living room and gave one to Hardik and kept one for myself.

"These are the last two glasses of water, and our food is over too." I said.

Yes, we finished all supplies in two days as some kind of beast and the best part was we didn't even think of any plan. But we did listen to the radio but we didn't got anything. Our phones had a message that it is an apocalypse and we should stay at home. We know that, very important information they gave us. "Dumb!" We called them. We did saw some news on the T.V. before the signal broke, the entire state of Rajasthan was dead, the neighbouring states were also closed and isolated, preventing the virus to spread.

We, then, thought of a plan by combining our two-celled minds and came up with a plan, we thought that we would go out at night when zombies are sleeping.

We prepared ourselves at night and Hardik opened the apartment's door and peeped outside and started walking in the corridor. We had decided to go on the second floor which was a restaurant and look for food supplies there. We still didn't realised that zombies don't sleep at night. Eventually, we crossed an apartment, it's door was open and we saw some zombies lying there.

"See, I told you zombies sleep at night." Hardik said, proving himself greater than Einstein.

I nodded but soon realised that they were not sleeping, they were moving slowly like trying to grab on something.

Hardik, the very courageous man, went to check them.

I tried to stop him but he was overflowing with confidence. Then, Hardik kicked one of them like a football. The zombies looked at him slowly, Hardik looked at zombies and then, he looked at me. I dragged him and closed the door. In the silent night, the door made a big echo noise when I banged it close.

"They were sleeping, but you disturbed them." I said.

I patted him on his back telling him to move on.

Suddenly, we felt the hustle and Hardik saw zombies coming and said,"looks like we disturbed the sleep of them all."

We ran but it all came to a dead end of a hallway with a window. We turned back and saw zombies coming.

"We have to do it." I said.

"What?" Hardik asked

"The jump, don't worry we will fall onto the big ledge of the restaurant." I said.

Hardik looked out of the window and said," dude, are you sure? Because we might die before even reachi-"

I jumped and fell on the big ledge of the restaurant just as I expected, Hardik saw no other choice and followed me.

We, then, grabbed on the ledge and hung over the window of the restaurant but unfortunately, we saw zombies.

"Are you serious? Now, how do we get food? Leave food, how can we even survive, we can't just hang on a window." Hardik said.

"There are just couple of zombies, we can escape without being seen." I said.

Hardik counted," 14,15,16 and 17 zombies. Yeah, definitely just a couple."

"We can try waiting, they will go away in maybe 2--" I said and started thinking.

"Hours?" Hardik said.

"Days." I said.

"Great." Hardik said.

Thankfully, zombies doesn't think of anything beside eating human beings or else imagine seeing two boys hanging on the window outside and talking.

Suddenly, an utensil came flying on us causing us to fall to the first floor's ledge.

"My heart is in my mouth." Hardik said.

"Not any different here." I replied.

"Who was it?" Hardik asked.

"Like I know." I said.

Hardik peeked in the apartment below us and said,"Hey, I recognise this apartment, it's Mayank's."

We entered the apartment through the window, hoping no zombies there. The door of the apartment was open and it added to our anxiety but we closed it. We didn't saw any blood or human.

We entered a bedroom by opening it's door and came out after two seconds. Hardik's knees gave up and he fell on the floor. I let out a huge hesitated sigh due to the shock, we were devastated by the sight.

"Mayank....no......oh noo" Hardik was at the verge of crying, I could feel the pain in his broken voice.

We saw Mayank's body lying there without an arm and both legs were also gone, blood everywhere in the room. I went to the kitchen and brought water for Hardik, even my hand was shaking, I was sobbing. He refused for the water but I insisted but he refused again, now in anger.

Mayank was Hardik's best friend, they were friends for as long as Hardik remembers.

"I'm gonna kill every single one of them." Hardik said, taking huge breaths to stop crying.

"You can't, you are not some kind of hero." I tried to calm him but he was beyond that.

"Now, here we part ways." Hardik said.

"What?" I asked.

"Don't follow me." Hardik said.

"Why ?" I asked.

"Because, my goal is not survival anymore." He replied.

"Ok, but we are gonna stay together." I said.

"No"

"Yes" I insisted.

After 10 minutes, I, somehow, managed to make him agree for staying with me.

He, then, went to a room and brought a gun, a pistol to be exact.

"Oh, that's.....................nice, where did you find it?" I asked.

"Mayank told me about this once." He said.

I didn't said anything further to not bring that topic up again. Hardik opened the door of the apartment and went out but before I came out, he pushed me and locked the door.

"Sorry, but you gotta stay alive." He said.

"Wait! Wait.......open the door, please." I begged but no answer or response came.
