Chapter 38:

Village Under Attack

Beasted

Patty was unsure about his departure and looked at Zeev. He hugged her to calm her down. Will it be okay without Romulus? ...They would sadly find in no time.

Romulus was heading for the mountains. His cabin, down in the valley was destroyed and now he had no place to go. He would seek a cave first for some shelter. He was sitting on a stone overlooking the path he walked till now, which was quickly disappearing under piles of fresh snow.

Was it the right choice to leave? Well, Zeev took something precious, that he longed for. At the village was nothing else holding him there. The werewolf villagers hated him, Zeev didn't like him either, only Patty... but that's history now.

Romulus decided to continue on his journey for a new life. Maybe he should travel even further and blend into a new, different werewolf pack. Maybe they will accept him. He still had his doubts because of his... special genes.

The winter was raging over his head but he didn't feel cold because his coat protected him perfectly. His fur was waving in the snowy wind and the ice-cold air made his breath condense into a steamy cloud.

His ears twitched and began to move around. Romulus could hear distressing sounds coming from the valley... the werewolf village? Did something serious happen? Should he care? No. He shouldn't. He isn't any part of it anyway. But... Patty...

His consciousness and heart spoke. Despite her choice, he shouldn't abandon her like that. He promised to protect her. Is this one more promise he broke? Becoming Zeev's mate didn't change his feelings towards her. What if she is in danger?

Romulus turned on his heels and raced down the snowy mountain on all fours to be there quicker. He prayed for a miracle... to be wrong in his suspicions... He returned into a disaster. Everything was smashed, burning, or completely torn down. Traces of blood everywhere with limp bodies lying around.

He dreaded to walk over to Zeev's and Patty's cabin. But he had to...

Half of their cabin was missing. What the hell happened here? ...was racing through his mind. He began to sniff in the air to pick up Patty's or Zeev's scents. What's going on? Why can't he locate them? His sense of smell was clogged with coppery odor, burned flesh, gunpowder, and death.

He was getting desperate and whimpered for himself. Sat down on his hind legs grabbing his head with his arms. This is his fault! He let them down, he abandoned Patty and now she might be probably dead...

Romulus hyperventilated still looking around at the havoc. Cries and light screams of pain surrounded him, pawing on his ears. He didn't know how to help. His head sank from the disappointment of himself.

A familiar voice ripped him out of his misery. Patty! She is alive. He ran over to the collapsed cottage and beam after beam he dug his way towards her. Her scent became more and more prominent. She was still alive, a little hurt but she seemed to be fine. Such luck!

He threw the last beam to the side and embraced her in his strong paws shedding tears. Patty felt them caressing her face warming it up a little bit. She didn't expect him to be her rescuer. "You... came... back." With a shaky hand, she reached to his werewolf face touching his muzzle.

For a second she smiled and then fell unconscious making Romulus go into full panic. Her breathing got shallow and Romulus thought she was dying. He began to run around with Patty in his arms seeking help. But everybody there needed some.

He sat again on his hind legs cradling her in his arms and rocking back and forth like on the mountain range not long ago. He can't lose it now! He can't let her die like that. He needs to do something about it! What did Zeev do last time? RIGHT!

Romulus placed her on her back and tried to replicate what Zeev did. He gave her first aid but tried to be more gentle because he wasn't sure about the pressure and his strength. Romulus didn't plan to crush her rib cage with his brute werewolf force.

Patty's breathing came back to normal and Romulus sighted out of relief. He did it! He really did! A new sense of power overflew his body. He could lend a helping paw to the other werewolves as well! GOOD!

Romulus found some blankets and wrapped Patty in one and then he ran around the village and was helping the others, one at a time. Soon most of them were fine again. Sadly there were few for whom the help came too late... Romulus worked hard till the next day.

In the morning Patty was walking around with meals she could prepare and handing them over for anybody hungry. They had to come back on their legs because now they had not only to rebuild everything but get back their alpha!

Romulus sat on a log with Patty on his knees so she would be warm and not catch a cold. There was no real shelter to hide right now. He was questioning what happened yesterday.
She looked up at him. "It was the military..."

Shocked he didn't even want to breathe. How did they find their hiding spot? Patty lowered her gaze. "It was Natalia. She betrayed her own kin... She came together with them in tow and helped them to attack the villagers."

Romulus felt like he was the cause of it. Patty noticed his gloomy expression. "It wasn't your fault. She was against me for a long time. This was bound to happen." Patty caressed Romuluse's face. He leaned into her warm palm rubbing his cheek in it.

"Natalia first attacked the elderly werewolves. Everybody went to that side to defend them, even Zeev..." For a second Patty got silent. "It was a trap! I was surprised by an explosion and buried under. Zeev turned to our cottage. I could hear him and got captured by..." *sigh* "Your crazy doctor..."

A cold chill ran down Romuluse's spine. Anybody... just not HER! He was a huge strong super werewolf but that woman was the only thing in the world he feared. Romulus gently squeezed Patty in his arms placing his chin on top of her head and then looked down.
"We will save him!"
