Chapter 34:
En Passant Grandmaster
Okisato opened the game by moving his pawn to f3 while Gyro moved his pawn to e5. He followed up by moving his king to f2, much to Mimoko's horror and Gyro's pleasure.
"M- MMPH NGH MMPH NGH!? MMPH NGH MMPH NGH [T- THE BARNES OPENING: HAMMERSCHLAG VARIATION!? TANABE-KUN, THIS IS LIFE OR DEATH FOR BOTH OF US]!" Mimoko cried as Gyro moved his pawn to d5.
"Trying to look cool? Well it makes my life easier," Gyro chuckled as Okisato moved his pawn to e3.
"And what if I beat you with this Hammerschlag?" Okisato asked as Gyro moved his pawn to d4.
"Doubtful. You may be skilled, but against a grandmaster such as I, you won't be able to pull off a win with that move," Gyro scoffed as Okisato moved his bishop to d3.
Okisato went silent as Gyro moved his knight to c6, before moving his knight to e2.
"Not going to say anything? Well, not like I mind. Check," Gyro stated as he moved his queen to h4.
Okisato shrugged and moved his pawn to g3, forcing Gyro's queen to f6.
He then followed up by moving his king to g2, causing Gyro to scowl. "You might have found the best move, but I still have the advantage," he thought as he moved his bishop to d6.
"Now time to get down and dirty," Okisato thought as he captured the pawn at d4 with his e-pawn.
Gyro immediately captured said pawn with his e-pawn, followed by Okisato moving his bishop to e4.
"Fool, I've got the advantage," Gyro thought as he moved his g-knight to e7 while Okisatp moved his pawn to h4.
Gyro then moved his knight to f5 while Okisato moved his pawn to d3. He then castled on the king's side while Okisato moved his bishop to g5.
"What a foolish move," Gyro scoffed as he moved his queen to e5.
"How so?" Okisato asked as he moved his knight to a3.
"I need not divulge all my thoughts to you," Gyro glared as he moved his knight to a5.
"Then neither will I," Okisato shrugged as he slid his queen to e1.
"A trade it is then," Gyro scowled as hr captured the knight at a3 with his bishop.
"No, I'll still win the skirmish," Okisato declared as he captured said bishop with his b-pawn.
"Not in the slightest, Gyro scoffed as he moved his knight to c6.
Okisato paused for a moment before deciding to move his pawn to c3.
Mimoko stared at the state of the board and closed her eyes. "Tanbe-kun, you shouldn't have started the game with that reckless opening. While things have evened out, one wrong move and it's over. Mr. Gunnerson is not the kind of opponent that will allow you to get away with playing reckless moves against him. Tanabe-kun, please don't blunder," she thought.
Gyro meanwhile was deep in thought as he too stared at the board "I think I'll frighten him a bit," he thought as he decided to move his queen to d6.
"Talk about smoke and mirrors," Okisato glared as he captured the pawn at d4 with his c-pawn.
"It's called controlling your movements. Do you see these fine gyroscopes constantly spinning atop me? I'm able to do this because I can control their movement to a tee," Gyro stated as he captured the pawn at d4 with his f-knight.
"Sure, keep em moving," Okisato shrugged as he captured said knight with his knight.
"They do not affect my concentration, rather they strengthen it," Gyro grinned as he captured said knight with queen.
Okisato nodded and moved his rook to c1, not giving a care about Gyro’s explanation.
"Boy, I control the board," Gyro scoffed as he moved his queen to d6 while Okisato quickly captured the knight at c6 with his bishop. "You think I didn't see that!?" Gyro growled as he captured said bishop with his b-pawn.
"GOT HIM!" Okisato sadistically smiled in his mind as he moved his bishop to e7.
Gyro's eyes widened as he stared at the board. He had fallen right into Okisato's trap, and was now going to lose either his queen or a rook. "Tch! Damn you," he glared as he moved his queen out of the bishop's path to d5.
"Heh? Guess you didn't see that beautiful fork back when you decided to capture my bishop at c6," Okisato sneered as he captured the rook at f8 with his bishop.
"Y- You just- ...You weasel, so you have a hidden side too," Gyro glared as he captured said bishop with his king.
"Guess I'll go chuuni mode for this then. Check, feather-bastard," Okisato snickered as he moved his queen to b4.
Gyro glared before suddenly widening his eyes in shock as he gazed at the board."Damn you... DAMN YOU, YOU PIECE OF SHIT!"
"Now we shall make a trade good sir, oh wait you're not a good sir, you're an ugly feathered bastard in CHECK!"
Gyro gritted his teeth in frustration as he moved his king to g8 while Okisato grinned and moved his queen to c4. As soon as Okisato took his hand off the piece, Gyro slammed his rook down on b8.
"Whoa, you getting shocked already?" Okisato taunted as he captured the queen at d5 with his queen.
"I'm merely trading a queen for a queen," Gyro glared as he captured said queen with his c-pawn.
Okisato smirked and simply moved his rook to b1, while Gyro moved his rook to b6.
"Tanabe-kun, this is where you absolutely CANNOT mess up!" Mimoko thought as she began to tremble.
"Now comes the slog," Okisato thought as he moved his h-rook to c1 while Gyro opted to move his bishop to f5, prompting him to to move his rook to b3 on his next turn.
This completely shut down Gyro's plan, prompting him to move his pawn to h6. However, that gave Okisato the opportunity to increase his advantage and capture the pawn at c7 with his rook. This caused Gyro to let out a frustrated roar as he slammed his pawn down on d4.
Okisato then decided to threaten the bishop by moving his pawn to g4, but as soon as Gyro moved his bishop to e6, he decided it was time to trade rooks.
"Surprised you're willing to give away rooks when you're losing badly," Okisato snickered as he captured the rook at b6 with his rook.
Gyro's only viable move was to capture said rook with his a-pawn, which he did, while Okisato continued his attack by moving his rook to b7, threatening the pawn at b6. Gyro quickly moved his pawn to h5, prompting Okisato to capture said pawn with his g-pawn.
"Amateur," Gyro scoffed as he slammed his king town on h7.
"No, it's amateurish to think that would work," Okisato snickered as he moved his pawn to a4.
Gyro let out a sigh of relief as he began regaining his composure. "Seems he can't mate me with just a rook. I've still got my bishop; a piece versatile enough for me to turn this around," he maliciously thought as he captured the pawn at a2 with his bishop.
"Seems I got excited too soon. There's still a ton of clean-up to do," Okisato thought as his normal expressionless persona returned while he captured the pawn at b6 with his rook.
"You play sloppily, that's why you're losing. Well, perhaps when you're electrocuted to death, you'll see this failure flash before your eyes multiple times, along with Mimoko Inoue's disappointed look. Oh, how agonizing it must be to be a damsel with your life resting in the hands of this idiot" Gyro sneered as he moved his pawn to f6 and glanced up at Mimoko.
Mimoko responded with an angry muffled grunt as Okisato stared in silence for a few seconds before moving his rook to d6.
"What a waste, I'll snuff out your petty pawns. At worst, I can aim for a stalemate" Gyro snickered as he moved his pawn to g5.
Tears immediately began to well up in Mimoko's eyes as she stared at the board. "Tanabe-kun, you baka. Baka!" she thought.
Gyro took notice of her mood shift and began to smile confidently. "Seems Mimoko Inoue can see it, my imminent victory, along with her death!"
"Why are you so confident? I'm about to take your pawn you know," Okiato sighed.
"Oh? Did you really think I'd be upset about THAT!? Go ahead and take the pawn! It will never reach my side of the board!"
Suddenly, Okisato burst into maniacal laughter. "Oh, you Desperado folks really are stupid. Guess you'll be eating your own words and getting an additional big shock before you die!"
"Deluded much? Capturing the pawn gives ME an advantage."
"Sure capturing it normally does, but I guess you forgot, ABOUT EN PASSANT!" Okisato sadistically shouted as he performed en passant and not only captured the pawn at g6 with his h-pawn, but also put Gyro's king in check.
Gyro immediately went pale as he realized he was screwed.
"Heh? What's wrong? Thought you said I could take the pawn, Mr. Feathered bastard in CHECK!" Okisato taunted.
The toy gyroscopes that had been spinning on Gyro's shoulders quickly fell to the ground with a thud as Gyro began to tremble. "No, no, NO! I WON'T LOSE!" he shouted as he captured the pawn at g6 with his king.
"But you're going to. Mate's inevitable now," Okisato maliciously smiled as he advanced his pawn to a5.
"NOOOOOO! I CAN'T LOSE! I WON'T LOSE!" Gyro frantically shouted as he moved his king to f5.
"Sorry, I gotta get a queen. Hang out with the rook if you don't mind," Okisato taunted as he moved his pawn to a6.
"EAT YOUR DAMN WORDS, TRASH!" Gyro shouted as he moved his king to e5.
"Psych! You think I'd hang my rook for you?" Okisato taunted as he moved his rook to d8.
"I'LL TAKE YOUR ROOK!" Gyro shouted as one of the toy gyroscopes on his hat fell off while he moved his king to e6.
"Nah, back to e5 with your king," Okisato taunted as he captured the pawn at d4 with his rook.
Gyro clicked his tongue in frustration as he did just as Okisato said and moved his king back to e5.
Okisato then simply moved his rook back to d8 as a wave of desperation overtook Gyro. "If I can't win, I'll draw! Yes, I'll trick him into stalemating me with two queens!" he thought as he moved his bishop to d5.
"Alright Desperado, you want me to leave you with nothing? You got it. Check," Okisato snickered as he captured the bishop at d5 with his rook. "Guess you got my rook after all. Feeling happy?" he taunted as Gyro captured said rook with his king.
He then moved his pawn to a7 while Gyro began to tremble, but mustered the strength to move his pawn to f5.
"Now you're dead; queen and check," Okisato smirked as he moved his pawn to a8 and promoted it to a queen forcing Gyro to move his king to e6. "Sorry, no stalemate for you," he thought as he moved his pawn to h5.
"I WON'T LOSE!" Gyro cried as he moved his king to f6.
"You're gonna drag this out. I hate a dragged out game. But then again, I said I'd leave you with nothing, and that's what I'm gonna do," Okisato maliciously smiled as he moved his pawn to h7.
Gyro quickly moved his king to d4, followed by Okisato moving his pawn to h8 and promoting it to a queen, forcing Gyro to move his king to e3. Okisato then moved his queen to a5, prompting Gyro to capture the pawn at d3 with his king.
"Yes, YES! Now I can force stalemate!" Gyro thought as Okisato captured the pawn at f5 with his queen.
"Is he that deluded that he thinks I'll stalemate him?" Okisato thought as Gyro moved his king to c4. "I'm not stupid enough to blunder a win here. Mate in 2," Okisato glared as he moved his queen to a1.
Of the two possible moves he could make, King b4 or King b3 Gyro opted for the former. "I won't lose! I'm gonna DRAW!" he cackled.
"No, you're losing and getting mated next turn. Check," Okisato glared as he moved his queen to b2.
Now reality finally began to sink in as Gyro began to go pale and sweat an ocean. "Was Mimoko Inoue crying back then because she foresaw all this!? No, even if she could, there was no guarantee the oni-tiger would be able to pull it- What am I thinking, she saw the path to victory! Damn her, DAMN HER!" he thought as he reached for his king. "Maybe he'll mess up. Maybe he'll mess up," he uttered as one last grip of delusion consumed him as he moved his king to c5.
Okisato quickly put an end to those delusions by slamming his f-queen down on b5, winning the game. "CHECKMATE BA-KA!" he maniacally laughed as he gave Gyro the middle finger.
The delusional smile plastered on Gyro's face instantly turned into a terrified frown. "No, NO! I CAN'T LOSE! THE ULTIMA-MASTER THE-"
Gyro suddenly felt time slowing down as a trap door opened beneath him, and dumped him towards the electrified water below. "So this is the end. I can only hope my colleagues prevent Mimoko Inoue from playing the Ultima-master, or that the Ultima-master can beat her or at least survive with a stalemate. I guess I should take solace in the fact that I will never have to live in the Mimoko Inoue era of chess," he thought.
With a mighty splash, broken by a loud scream, Gyro fell into the electric lagoon and was electrocuted to death. As his corpse floated away, the DESPER let out a puff of smoke as Okisato leapt off the vanishing platform and onto a walkway. Mimoko suddenly felt herself falling and let out a muffled scream before being caught in Okisato's arms.
"How'd I do, Inoue-senpai?" Okisato asked as he ripped the tape of Mimoko's mouth.
"For now, I'm just happy you won," Mimoko tearfully smiled.
