One wrong move

Students all gathered and watched as the principal was taken away in a body bag. Frantic teachers desperately tried to control the crowd, but to no avail.

"My, seems that foul celebrity, Mimoko Inoue, drove our poor principal to suicide," Shion Segawa sneered.

"Yeah, I heard she called him up to the roof, I saw it!" Shion's lackey, Kigyoku Gyakui, sneered.

"Bullshit! I literally just got here!" Mimoko fumed.

"Yet you seemed quite pleased when you saw our principal fall before you," Shion sneered as she displayed the photo she had taken of Mimoko.

Due to Mimoko's facial expression not quite fitting the narrative, Shion hoped to spin, Shion had edited the photo a bit to give Mimoko a more sinister expression. At a quick glance, it would look convincing, but upon closer inspection, it would quickly be called out for the fake it was. Yet a quick glance was all Shion was going for.

"I saw it. Utami-chan and a foreign woman with silver hair were viciously dragging the principal up to the roof. I was scared and ran to tell Kazuya, who assured me that he'd confront them, but he hasn't come back yet! I'm scared. I don't want him dying like Nagi-kun!"

As Shion burst into fake tears, Kigyoku stealthily slipped a note to Mimoko. Mimoko opened the note, which read, "Utami is being held prisoner. Come to the roof ALONE if you wish to save her."

Mimoko dropped the note and immediately rushed into the school, heading for the roof as fast as she could.

Maida took notice, but before she could pursue, she was approached by a policewoman.

"Oi, you a teacher here? Need ya to do me a little solid," she grinned as she motioned towards the sports shed.

"All according to plan," Kigyoku thought as she reached for the note Mimoko had dropped.

Before she could grab it, Iori snatched it away. "Sorry, but this looks like important evidence that could fuck up your plan, so I'm taking it."

Kigyoku scowled, but decided to leave things be. "Whatever, I'm sure Shion-sama will be able to implicate her as well."

On the roof of the school, the door to the stairwell swung open, causing everyone to turn.

"Oh? I wasn't expecting you to get here first, Tanabe," Kazuya scowled as Okisato stood before him.

Svetlana began twitching as she reached for her sledgehammer. "Kazuya, kill him now."

"But the plan-"

"KILL HIM NOW!"

Kazuya sighed and pulled out his DESPER. "Very well, we'll modify the plan. It's not like it will change the outcome though. Now as for the punishment, loser jumps off the roof of the school, nothing more, nothing less."

"Fine by me," Okisato nodded.

"Good, because pawn and move odds will be in effect and Utami Enoki shall be imprisoned in your b-pawn!" Kazuya maniacally grinned as he activated his DESPER.

The rooftop patio quickly turned into a large chess board. Okisato's pawn at f7 vanished, while Utami was imprisoned in the pawn at b7.

"Well that's a troublesome piece to put her in. I'm glad he agreed to fight me. If Inoue-senpai came, she'd probably end up losing Utami in the cruelest of ways. That bastard is lucky I'm going soft on the punishment for Inoue-senpai's sake," Okisato thought.

"If you think I'll play like that stupid bald catgirl just because I'm implementing odds, you're wrong," Kazuya sneered as he gazed at a mini-screen and moved his pawn to e4.

"So we have to stay on the board then."

"Yes, but we can walk around as we please and view the game through a mini-screen. Though the pieces will bump us out of the way. Don't worry, they won't send you flying off, just a slight nudge is all."

"I see," Okisato nodded as he moved his pawn to c5.

"You really don't have many choices since we're playing with pawn and move odds; well, that was one of the only two good moves you could make," Kazuya sneered as he moved his pawn to d4.

"But once I get past that hurdle, it's easy," Okisato glared as he captured the pawn at d4 with his c-pawn.

Kazuya smirked as he captured the pawn at d4 with his queen while Okisato moved his knight to c6.

"You think that will deter me?"Kazuya sneered as he moved his queen to d5.

"No," Okisato replied as he moved his knight to f6.

"So predictable, but now you'll face true turmoil," Kazuya sneered as he moved his queen to b3, threatening Utami’s pawn.

"Figured you try that," Okisato glared as he moved his queen to b6.

The two then exchanged queens with Kazuya capturing Okisato's queen with his, and Okisato capturing Kazuya's with his a-pawn. Kazuya then moved his knight to c3 while Okisato moved his pawn to e6. He then moved his bishop to e3 while Okisato moved his bishop to b4.

Kazuya then castled on the queen's side, allowing Okisato to capture the knight at c3 with his bishop. Kazuya promptly captured said bishop with his b-pawn while Okisato captured the pawn at e4 with his knight.

Then, trouble struck as Kazuya captured the pawn at b6 with his bishop. "Utami is nothing but deadweight, must be aggravating making dumb moves to protect trash like her!" Kazuya sneered as Okisato captured the pawn at a2 with his rook.

"What bad move?" Okisato glared as Kazuya moved his bishop to e2.

"Oh, you'll see, soon," Kazuya taunted as Okisato captured the pawn at c3 with his knight.

Kazuya seemed unphased by the bind he was in, as he moved his king to d2, nor when Okisato captured his rook at d1 with his knight.

"I know he's far less skilled than me, but these are horrible plays. Hmm, seems like I read him like a book after all," Okisato thought as Kazuya captured the knight at d1 with his bishop.

Okisato then moved his pawn to d5 followed by Kazuya moving his knight out to f3. This gave Okisato the chance to castle on the king's side while Kazuya decided to move his remaining rook to e1. Okisato began to ease up as he moved his bishop to d7, while Kazuya began setting something up by moving his bishop to e2. Though as soon as Okisato moved his rook to c8, Kazuya's plan became apparent as he moved his rook to b1.

"So now you're trading rooks, even though you're down one?" Okisato thought as he moved his rook to a4.

"You don't need to trade. After all, it's just a pawn," Kazuya sneered as he moved his bishop to d4.

"Well, guess I should be glad he's stupid," Okisato thought as he moved his rook to b4.

Kazuya promptly captured said rook, forcing Okisato to roll his eyes as he captured Kazuya's rook with his knight. Undeterred, Kazuya advanced his knight to e5, prompting Okisato to give him a reality check by capturing his pawn at c2 with his rook. Still undeterred, Kazuya moved his king to d1 while Okisato moved his bishop to a4.

As soon as Kazuya moved his king to e1, Okisato let out a sigh. "Well... Whatever," he shrugged as he moved his knight to c6.

Kazuya let out a chuckle as he captured the knight at c6 with his knight, followed by Okisato capturing said knight with his b-pawn causing Utami to shut her eyes in terror as she began moving.

"My, you're moving that useless piece?" Kazuya sneered as he moved his pawn to f4.

"Pawns aren't useless, they can cover lots of ground and promote into queens if need be," Okisato glared as he moved his rook to c4.

"Yes, of course," Kazuya chuckled as he moved his king to d2.

"You know, Enoki-san likes the queen," Okisato glared as he captured the bishop at d4 with his rook.

"Why should I care about that trash?" Kazuya taunted as he moved his king to e3.

"You know, I think you might be worse than your brother and father. I really regret that I agreed to your paltry punishment," Okisato glared as he moved Utami's pawn to c5.

"Are you going to try and beat me with her!? Like I'd allow that to happen," Kazuya scoffed as he moved his king to f2.

Okisato rolled his eyes and moved his rook to d2, prompting Kazuya to move his pawn to g4. "Were you planning on doing something with that bishop?" Okisato glared as he advanced Utami's pawn to c4.

"Well aren't you tempting fate," Kazuya sneered as he moved his king to e3.

"I see no threats," Okisato glared as he moved Utami's pawn to c3.

"No, I want her death to be just right," Kazuya thought as he moved his king to f2.

Okisato seemed unaware of Kazuya's malicious intentions as he moved his bishop to b5. "Seems like Utami-chan's going to be the one that mates you. How poetic," Okisato glared as Kazuya began to scowl.

"No, NO! I WON'T accept it!" Kazuya fumed as he moved his pawn to f5.

"Mate's inevitable, check," Okisato glared as he captured the bishop at e2 with his rook.

"Oh no!" Kazuya trembled in terror as he moved his king to f1.

"FINALLY! That idiot sure took his time, but now it should be an easy mate, and I'll do it as a mad queen. I couldn't ask for better poetic justice to spite Kazuya-nii with," Utami thought as the pawn she was in advanced to c2.

"No, not yet. The woman you respect so much still needs to arrive," Kazuya thought.

Suddenly, the rooftop door swung open as Mimoko ran onto the roof.

"UTAMI-CHAN! W- Huh!? What's the meaning of this!? Tanabe-kun why- MMPH!?"

"Sorry, but you need to stay quiet during the game," Svetlana glared as she restrained Mimoko and covered her mouth with her hand.

Mimoko shot Svetlana a glare, but her mood slightly improved upon analyzing the state of the game and seeing Kazuya capture the pawn at e6 with his f-pawn. "Hold on, the pawn Utami-chan's in can promote to a queen and mate! I guess Tanabe-kun did a decent job, but I'm still going to press him on how he got here before me. Now, promote Utami-chan into a queen and put that shitty brother of hers in his place!" she thought.

"Yes, promote her. If I didn't do my research, I'd be sweating buckets, but ever since I found out that someone trapped within a pawn will also die if the pawn is promoted, I sought to make this scenario a reality. The stage is perfect! Tanabe will move Utami's pawn to c1, promote her to a queen, mate me, and watch in horror along with Inoue as Utami is blown to bits and her blood and guts rain down on us. Then, I'll make my dramatic departure and jump off the roof, ascending to martyrdom, and blaming the chess club for my murder. Oh, I'm such an evil genius," Kazuya maniacally thought.

Mimoko watched as Okisato stared at Utami. "Why are you staring!? Move her to c1 and promote her to a queen and it's mate!" she angrily thought.

"Tanabe-san, why are you hesitating? Promote me to a queen and we win! I couldn't ask for a better, more fitting way to best this bastard of a brother!" Utami angrily thought.

To everyone's surprise, Okisato instead captured the pawn at e6 with his rook.

"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING!?" Mimoko shouted as she managed to free her mouth from Svetlana's grasp.

"Inoue-senpai? Wow, you really are a piece of shit, student council president."

"Huh? You're the one trying to prolong the game-"

"Enoki-san would have died if I promoted her, yes?"

Mimoko and Utami went pale with horror as a sinister smirk appeared on Kazuya's face. "My, what makes you level accusations like that?"

"I had my suspicions from the beginning, but your recent moves truly confirmed that you wanted me to mate you by promoting Enoki-san's pawn to a queen."

"No, why would Utami die if she's promoted into a queen? Would that not be a fitting way to beat me?"

"No, she's imprisoned in a pawn. The pawn itself would be destroyed and replaced with a new queen. I imagine you've confirmed all this for yourself, which is why you originally planned to face off against Inoue-senpai as she would have likely promoted Enoki-san without hesitation."

Kazuya began to chuckle. "Not bad. Yes, after I heard what Nyoan was able to do, I did some experimenting and found that those imprisoned in pawns will die if their pawn is promoted, since the pawn itself is technically removed from play. Only if the pawn itself remains on the playing field at the game's conclusion does the prisoner inside it live. Oh the look on that guy's face when he mated me and his girlfriend exploded to bits, why not see the replay?" Kazuya sneered as a screen appeared.

On the screen, footage played of a young man moving the pawn his girlfriend was imprisoned in to the 1st rank. Immediately after the man chose to promote her to a queen, the piece exploded and the girl's blood and guts rained down as a queen stood where it had been. Despite winning, the young man fell to his knees and cried as Kazuya handed him a fat stack of cash.

"My, what a sore winner. He got 1 million yen from me," Kazuya sneered as the screen vanished and he moved his king to g2.

"You really are a piece of shit. If you weren't trying to frame us, I'd have had a more gruesome death be your punishment," Okisato glared as he moved his pawn to d4.

"Oh? You caught on to that too? Well, unfortunately for you, I can still make things end the way I want it to," Kazuya sneered as he moved his king to f2.

"No, your defeat is merely delayed. I won't let you threaten Enoki-san ever again, either," Okisato glared as he moved his pawn to d3.

"And how do you plan to do that?" Kazuya sneered as he moved his king to g3.

"I have plenty of material to work with," Okisato glared as he moved his bishop to c6.

"Think I'll allow it!?" Kazuya laughed as he moved his king to h4.

"Well you're making troublesome moves," Okisato glared as he moved his pawn to g5.

Kazuya immediately captured the pawn at g5 with his king as Okisato moved his king to f7. He then moved his king to f5, prompting Okisato to move his bishop to e5, forcing Kazuya's king to g5. Okisato then moved his pawn to h6, forcing Kazuya's king to h4. He then advanced his pawn to d2, while Kazuya advanced his pawn to h3.

As soon as Okisato moved his bishop to g6, Mimoko began to scowl. "He better not screw this up with a stalemate," she thought as Kazuya moved his pawn to g5.

Okisato began to grin as he moved his pawn to d1 and promoted it to a queen. "Looks like you'll be mated by a queen after all."

"If it's a stalemate, Svetlana will just chuck Utami off the roof," Kazuya glared as he moved his king to g3.

"You're not getting the chance, check!" Okisato laughed as he moved his queen to g1.

"WHAT A FOOL!" Kazuya maniacally shouted as he moved his king to f3.

"You referring to yourself?" Okisato glared as he moved his rook to e3.

"No! You just stalemated yourself! All because you had to protect the deadweight in the pawn!" Kazuya shouted as he moved his king to f4.

"Yeah sure. Checkmate," Okisato nodded as he captured the pawn at g5 with his h-pawn, winning the game.

"Huh?" HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHH!? I- I lost!? But no, that means... I'M GONNA DIE! T- THIS IS JUST LIKE HOW YOU KILLED THE PRINCIPAL!" Kazuya stuttered as the board vanished and Utami was freed.

"UTAMI-CHAN!" Mimoko cried as Svetlana released her, allowing her to run over to Utami and began untying her.

Kazuya, meanwhile, walked back towards the ledge. "NO! MY BODY'S MOVING ON IT'S OWN! I'M NOT SUICIDAL! THE CHESS CLUB IS FORCING ME TO KILL MYSELF AGAINST MY WILL!" he cried as he toppled over the edge.

Svetlana ran to the ledge and stared down in horror as Kazuya fell. All while filming everything with her smartphone.

"Ha, those fools don't realize my death will be what spells their doom. It's a shame I couldn't take Utami with me, but this will be fine. Shion-sama, it is now up to you. A great man plants a tree knowing he will never live to see the day when he can bask in its shade, and that is what I'm doing. Make me a fine martyr-"

FWOOSH!

Kazuya's eyes went wide with shock as he found himself slowly and safely descending. "No, is this... AN AIRBAG?"

Sure enough, a giant airbag had been placed on the ground below the roof.

"Looks like I saw through your second plan too," Okisato smirked as Svetlana angrily turned to face him.

She immediately brandished her sledgehammer and charged for Okisato.

"УМРИ, КУСОК ДЕРЬМА![DIE YOU PIECE OF SHIT]!" she shouted as she brought the sledgehammer down on Okisato's head.

However, a turquoise glow suddenly emanated from him, which caused the sledgehammer to bounce off him and Svetlana to stumble back towards the edge of the roof and fall off, landing on the airbag as well.

Before she and Kazuya could react, the policewoman that had pulled aside Maida before, suddenly pounced on the two and cuffed them, grabbing them by their hair and slamming them face-first into the ground. "Your asses are under arrest for kidnapping," she snarled as she violently cuffed the two.

Crowds of students and teachers stared in bewilderment at the spectacle unfolding before them, however things only got crazier as a caravan of black SUVs and a limousine pulled into the school.

Buff foreign men in military attire quickly exited the SUVs, and lined up before the door to the limousine. One of them opened the door and a large man with a reddish beard clad in military attire stepped out wielding a pointed staff.

Okisato began to scowl as he recognized the man immediately. "Shit, now things might get really bad."
