The cruelest of wins

Mimoko watched as Okisato stared at Utami. "Why are you staring!? Move her to c1 and promote her to a queen and it's mate!" she angrily thought.

"Tanabe-san, why are you hesitating? Promote me to a queen and we win! I couldn't ask for a better, more fitting way to best this bastard of a brother!" Utami angrily thought.

To everyone's surprise, Okisato instead captured the pawn at e6 with his rook.

"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING!?" Mimoko shouted as she managed to pull Kigyoku's hand off her mouth.

"Inoue-senpai? Wow, you really are a piece of shit, student council president."

"Huh? You're the one trying to prolong the game-"

"Enoki-san would have died if I promoted her, yes?"

Mimoko and Utami went pale with horror.

"My, what makes you level accusations like that?" Kazuya sneered.

"I had my suspicions from the beginning, but your recent moves truly confirmed that you wanted me to mate you by promoting Enoki-san's pawn to a queen. I imagine you also planned to have Inoue-senpai witness it."

"No, why would Utami die if she's promoted into a queen? Would that not be a fitting way to beat me?"

"No, she's imprisoned in a pawn. The pawn itself would be destroyed and replaced with a new queen. I imagine you've confirmed all this for yourself, yes?"

Kazuya began to chuckle. "Not bad. Yes, after I heard what Nyoan was able to do, I did some experimenting and found that those imprisoned in pawns will die if their pawn is promoted, since the pawn itself is technically removed from play. Only if the pawn itself remains on the playing field at the game's conclusion does the prisoner inside it live. Oh the look on that guy's face when he mated me and his girlfriend exploded to bits, why not see the replay?" Kazuya sneered as a screen appeared.

On the screen, footage of a young man moving the pawn his girlfriend was imprisoned in to the 1st rank. Immediately after the man chose to promote her to a queen, the piece exploded and the girl's blood and guts rained down as a queen stood where it had been. Despite winning, the young man fell to his knees and cried as Kazuya handed him a fat stack of cash.

"My, what a sore winner. He got 1 million yen from me," Kazuya sneered as the screen vanished and he moved his king to g2.

"You really are a piece of shit. If you weren't trying to frame us, I'd have had a more gruesome death be your punishment," Okisato glared as he moved his pawn to d4.

"Oh? You think I can't make things end the way I want it to? You just blundered your win," Kazuya sneered as he moved his king to f2.

"No, it's merely delayed. I won't let you threaten Enoki-san ever again, either," Okisato glared as he moved his pawn to d3.

"And how do you plan to do that?" Kazuya sneered as he moved his king to g3.

"I have plenty of material to work with," Okisato glared as he moved his bishop to c6.

"Think I'll allow it!?" Kazuya laughed as he moved his king to h4.

"Well you're making troublesome moves," Okisato glared as he moved his pawn to g5.

Kazuya immediately captured the pawn at g5 with his king as Okisato moved his king to f7. He then moved his king to f5, prompting Okisato to move his bishop to e5, forcing Kazuya's king to g5. Okisato then moved his pawn to h6, forcing Kazuya's king to h4. He then advanced his pawn to d2, while Kazuya advanced his pawn to h3.

But as soon as Okisato moved his bishop to g6, Mimoko began to scowl. "He better not screw this up with a stalemate," she thought as Kazuya moved his pawn to g5.

Okisato began to grin as he moved his pawn to d1 and promoted it to a queen. "Looks like you'll be mated by a queen after all."

"If it's a stalemate, I'll just chuck Utami off the roof," Kazuya glared as he moved his king to g3.

"You're not getting the chance, check!" Okisato laughed as he moved his queen to g1.

"WHAT A FOOL!" Kazuya maniacally shouted as he moved his king to f3.

"You referring to yourself?" Okisato glared as he moved his rook to e3.

"No! You just stalemated yourself! All because you had to protect the deadweight in the pawn!" Kazuya shouted as he moved his king to f4.

"Yea Sure, checkmate," Okisato nodded as he captured the pawn at g5 with his h-pawn..

"Huh?" HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUHHHHHHHHHH!? I- I lost!? But no, that means... I'M GONNA DIE! T- THIS IS JUST LIKE HOW YOU KILLED THE PRINCIPAL!" Kazuya stuttered as the board vanished and Utami was freed.

"UTAMI-CHAN!" Mimoko cried as she ran over to Utami and began untying her.

Kazuya, meanwhile, walked back towards the ledge. "NO! MY BODY'S MOVING ON IT'S OWN! I'M NOT SUICIDAL! THE CHESS CLUB IS FORCING ME TO KILL MYSELF AGAINST MY WILL!" he cried as he toppled over the edge.

Shion ran to the ledge and stared down in horror as Kazuya fell. All while secretly filming everything with her smartphone.

"Ha, those fools don't realize my death will be what spells their doom. It's a shame I couldn't take Utami with me, but this will be fine. Shion-sama, it is now up to you. A great man plants a tree knowing he will never live to see the day when he can bask in its shade, and that is what I'm doing. Make me a fine martyr-"

FWOOSH!

Kazuya's eyes went wide with shock as he found himself slowly and safely descending. "No, is this... AN AIRBAG?"

Sure enough, a giant airbag had been placed on the ground below the roof.

"Looks like I saw through your second plan too," Okisato called down from the roof.

Kazuya began to scowl as he got up. "You think this is it!? I can still use this stunt you forced me into to my-"

Before Kazuya could complete his sentence, he was slammed face-first into the ground by a policewoman. "Your ass is under arrest for kidnappin," Otona snarled as she violently cuffed Kazuya and stood him up.

"THE HELL!? THIS IS A SET-UP- UGH!" Kazuya cried as Otona kneed him in the jaw, shutting him up.

Otona then proceeded to rough Kazuya up a bit before cuffing him and dragging him away, much to Shion’s anger.

"And that is checkmate. What a loser, you got mated twice in a minute," Okisato snickered.

Shion immediately turned to face Okisato. "The hell did you do!? The police are under my mother's command, none should dare-"

"There are righteous officers that will skirt the corruption to arrest a vicious kidnapper and murderer like him," Okisato said as he walked towards the deactivated DESPER, while internally noting that Otona was more bad to the bone corrupt than righteous.

Before he could grab the DESPER, Kigyoku immediately snatched it up and began hightailing it as Shion followed. "I will remember this transgression," Shion glared as she slammed the door behind her.

"Hope it doesn't lock from her side. Well, we could easily get rescued anyway," Okisato shrugged as he turned to find himself face-to-face with an angry Mimoko.

Slap!

"THAT was for not telling me about this. You knew how worried I was about Utami-chan!"

"I did this for your sake too. You would have lost horribly if you played instead of me. it was pawn and move odds with Enoki-san imprisoned in my b-pawn. If she got captured, she'd die."

"And you think I couldn't have protected her!?"

"Perhaps you could, but even though you'd mate Kazuya, Enoki-san would have probably died."

"What do you mean!?"

"When you came, you saw me in a position where I would have won if I promoted the pawn Enoki-san was in to a queen. Would you have promoted it?"

"Yes, I- Wait... He said if the pawn was promoted-"

"Enoki-san would have died. I imagine he would have only told you that she would be killed if her piece was captured. You and Enoki-san would have both agreed to promote her to a queen, then she'd explode to bits much to your horror as Kazuya killed himself to become a martyr."

Mimoko began to tremble. "H- How evil. How could he do something like that!?"

"Because he's scum. In your current emotional state, I doubt you'd have realized he was trying to goad you into promoting Enoki-san and fallen right into his trap. Though don't worry, I saw through everything and pulled off a win. Now go cuddle with Enoki-"

"HEY!"

Everyone turned to face Utami. She was trembling and looked scared to death, however, there was a semblance of determination in her eyes as she stared Okisato in the eyes. "D- Don't c- Call me by my surname. I don't like it, U- Utami-chan, pl- please."

It had taken every ounce of strength for her to utter those words as she fainted.

"UTAMI-CHAN!" Mimoko cried as she rushed over to Utami.

"Not bad, Utami-chan. This will be the start of your journey to grow stronger," Okisato thought as he headed for the door. However, much to his annoyance, the door was locked.
