Chapter 54:

Epilogue

Howl

After another week, Ferral had fully recovered from his injuries. Some scars still scattered around his body. His severed arm was replaced with a metal prosthetic one, despite the doctor and nurses insisting on a lighter plastic one. His right eye was now replaced with a new, fully functional replacement. However, they did not have his specific eye color so he went blue, once again despite being told to choose something more close to his other eye’s color.
It was a chilly fall afternoon, Ferral had gone by himself to the Central City Cemetery to finally pay his respects to Ezekiel and Belle. Their graves were next to each other, so it was easy to find both. As he stood over them, constantly opening and closing his fake hand, Ferral still held some guilt believing he indirectly had a hand in their deaths. Ms. Clare had to sometimes reassure him that he was in part to blame and that in the end, he avenged them. Though it was a little hard from him to accept it, he knew it's what they would've wanted him to do.
Just before he was about leave, he heard the crunch of leaves behind him, turning around Ferral was met with Dr. Atlas dressed in more casual attire. “Hello, Ferral.” Atlas greeted. Ignoring the fact he addressed him by name, Ferral scorned the doctor. “Give me one good reason why I shouldn't put you in the dirt along with everyone else here.” Ferral's words filled with vitriol. “Other than the gunmen already aimed for you, if you even sneeze in my direction, I simply came to talk.” Ferral scoffed and turned back around.
Atlas stood next to him, the two looked down at the graves. “These two were part of the good ones,” Atlas said, “Truly the definition of a sibling bond.” Ferral didn't respond, and kept opening and closing his hand. Atlas glanced at Ferral, giving a small smirk. “I hope you're prepared to endure what the outside world has to throw at you. You'll find that mankind won't greet you or the other experiments with open arms.” Ferral let out an annoyed sigh, “Do you have anything substantial to say? Or did you just come out here to annoy me?”
Atlas chuckled, “I do actually.” Again, Ferral didn't respond. “I understand why Dr. Amber found such interest in you. Not on a human level, heaven’s no, but on a scientific one. Your growth both in strength and intelligence has surprised me more than I could've imagined. And due to that, I want to see just how far you can go…both mind and body. Why do you think I never took you back during your time at the hospital?” That last comment caught Ferral's attention, he actually turned to look at Atlas as he continued. “Now, do not take this as an act of kindness. Rather, an opportunity for the both of us to see you evolve even further than what was originally planned. Try not to get too complacent, I want to see results. And I WILL still be keeping tabs on you, so don't think for a second you're free from me.”
Atlas turned and began to walk off. As he did, he stopped and turned his head. “Enjoy your time out in the real world, Mr. Ferral. But remember…you’re still a monster pretending he's a normal man.” Ferral clenched his fists hearing that last comment. Dr. Atlas walked off, leaving Ferral alone with what the doctor said circling through his mind.
