Chapter 94:

Maestro Himitsu vs Mimoko

En Passant Grandmaster

Himitsudono smirked as he watched the match.

"That was a low blow to deal Inoue-senpai," Okisato sighed as he walked up to him.

"I was merely following the maestro's orders, nothing more."

"But that revelation will likely lead to Inoue-senpai's defeat."

"You think she's not skilled enough?"

"Peter told me that the maestro here was easily one of his most formidable rivals. No way Inoue-senpai can beat her when her mind is in an emotional mess, especially since this new revelation changes everything."

"You didn't seem surprised when the maestro revealed herself, did you know about her identity beforehand?"

"No, but as soon as Inoue-senpai's mom entered, everything made sense. Why she and her family were attacked, why we never saw the maestro we were asked to save, everything clicked as soon as she entered."

"Hoh? You didn't believe her act?"

"I saw through it the moment she entered. You have ways to keep non-WWCF members out, yet she could enter, plus you agreed to garb her in the maestro's attire. She was undoubtedly the maestro."

"Very good, but knowing that won't make your match any easier."

"Yeah, I'm dreading it. I'm going to age rapidly for real," Okisato trembled.

"And is this an act."

"No, I'm getting the same chill I get whenever I face Peter; she's strong."

At the board Mimoko clenched her fist. "Why, WHY!?"

"Girl, converse through the board. Show me that you'll be 'correcting my mistakes at every turn' like you said," Daria glared.

"I'll make you tell me everything," Mimoko glared as she moved her pawn to-

"That I shall, but ONLY if you best me," Daria nodded as she moved her pawn to d5.

Just then, Peter entered the cafe. "So the maestro is back in action then," he grinned.

"Yeah, but there's a line. I'm up next after Inoue-senpai," Okisato stated.

"Hoh? Well this should be amusing."

"I don't think so. Inoue-senpai's probably going to lose."

"Why do you think that?"

"Because her mind is a mess."

"A good chess player can easily-"

"The maestro's actually her mother, and she just found out now."

Peter went silent. "So you're saying she'll play sloppily?"

"No, but one mistake against an opponent like the maestro, and its over."

"True. I guess I shall hope Mimoko Inoue defies your expectations."

"What about me?"

"Are you implying that you're going to beat the maestro?"

"I don't have a choice," Okisato sighed as Daria moved her pawn to e3

Mimoko nervously moved her knight to f6 as Daria advanced her pawn to d4. She followed up by moving her pawn to e6 while Daria moved her pawn to b3.

As soon as she moved her knight to e4, however, Peter began to scowl. "I see what you mean. Her mental fortitude is clearly rattled," he glared as Daria moved her bishop to d2.

The game continued on in silence with Mimoko moving her knight to c6 and Daria moving her pawn to a3. She then moved her bishop to e7 while Daria moved her pawn to c4. She then decided to castle on the king's side while Daria moved her queen to c2.

"F5, knight c3, a5, c captures d5, e captures d5, knight captures d5, bishop e6!? Ugh, Inoue-senpai's really off her game. Then again her mother is playing really well. I can see where she got her chess prowess from," Okisato thought as Daria moved her knight to f4.

Mimoko responded my moving her bishop to f7 while Daria moved her pawn to d5. She then moved her pawn to a4, giving Daria the chance to capture the knight on c6 with her d-pawn. Mimoko attempted to counter by capturing the pawn at b3 with her a-pawn, but Daria simply moved her queen to the safety of c1, prompting Mimoko to capture the pawn at c6 with her b-pawn.

"It is painful to see her in such a state," Peter sighed as Daria moved her knight to e5.

"Even the greats have bad days," Okisato sighed as Mimoko moved her pawn to g5.

"Yet you believe this is worse than that," Peter scowled as Daria captured the bishop at f7 with her knight.

"Yeah, I mean just look at Inoue-senpai's face. She's clearly distraught, likely due to the fact that she just learned her mother was the maestro," Okisato sighed as Mimoko captured the knight at f7 with her rook.

"So I take it you're planning to best the maestro for both your sakes?" Peter asked as Daria moved her knight to h5.

"Like I said before, I don't have a choice," Okisato sighed as Mimoko moved her queen to d5.

Daria quickly moved her bishop to c4, causing Mimoko to hold back her tears as she moved her queen to a5, forcing Daria's king to e2. "Why... WHY!? Why did you hide this from me, Okaa-chan?" she thought as she moved her knight to d6.

"This is check. How will you respond?" Daria asked as she captured the rook at f7 with her bishop.

Mimoko opted to capture said bishop with her king, leading Daria to capture the pawn at c6 with her queen. Mimoko then made a questionable move by moving her king to g6. This prompted Daria to move her pawn to h4, prompting Mimoko to initiate a queen trade by moving her queen to a4. Daria accepted, and captured said queen with her queen while Mimoko captured her queen with her rook. That wasn't the only trade that took place though as Daria swiftly captured the pawn at g5 with her h-pawn while Mimoko captured said pawn with her bishop.

Now in great control of the board, Daria moved her a-rook to c1 while Mimoko moved her knight to c4. This didn't phase Daria in the slightest though as she moved her bishop to h8, prompting Mimoko to move her pawn to c5.

Then, things got bad for Mimoko. After Daria Moved her knig to d3, Mimoko opted to capture the pawn at e3 with her knight. This led to said knight being captured by Daria's f-pawn. Mimoko attempted to retaliate by capturing the pawn at a3 with her rook, however, Daria simply captured the pawn at c5 with her rook.

Mimoko then advanced her pawn to b2, putting Daria's king in check, however Daria simply moved her king to c2. She then let out a frustrated grunt as she captured the pawn at e3 with her rook and watched Daria capture the pawn at b2 with her bishop. Mimoko attempted to go on the attack once more by moving her rook to e2, yet Daria simply moved her king to b1, prompting Mimoko to move her pawn to h6 on her next turn.

"Knight g3, rook e8, rook c7, rook e7, rook c6, check, king f7, knight captures f5, rook e6, knight captures h6, check, king e7... It's just as I feared. Inoue-senpai is going to lose. That means I'm going to have to beat that monster of a maestro," Okisato thought as Daria moved her knight to f5, forcing Mimoko's king to d7.

Daria then moved her rook to c5, but as soon as Mimoko moved her bishop to e7, she shook her head in disappointment. "Mate is inevitable now," she thought as she moved her knight to d1, prompting Mimoko to move her bishop to d6.

Daria simply captured said bishop with her knight, but insead of capturing it, Mimoko moved her rook to e2. "So you're giving up then? I'm disappointed," Daria scowled as she moved her knight to f5.

Mimoko remained silent as she moved her king to e6.

"Well, perhaps you simply don't wish to waste both our time. Mate in 4," Daria declared as she moved her rook to d6, forcing Mimoko's king to f7.

She then moved her rook to c7, forcing Mimoko's king to f8. She continued the attack by moving her rook to d8, forcing Mimoko to move her rook to e8, however Daria simply moved her bishop to a3."

"It's over," Peter sighed as Mimoko was forced to move her king to g8.

"Checkmate. And with that, you lose, dear challenger," Daria stated as she captured the rook at e8 with her rook, winning the game.

Mimoko's dam burst as she sank to the floor.

"Why are you crying," Daria scowled.

"BECAUSE OF YOU!"

"Besting you does-"

"NOT THE MATCH! Okaa-chan, why did you hide all this from me!?"

"You lost, so I am at no liberty to tell you."

"OKAA-CHAN! DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MUCH HELL I'VE BEEN THROUGH!?"

"I've been through hell as well, now please don't make a scene, I still have business to attend to," Daria glared as she turned to face Okisato. "Now it's your turn, boy."

"Very well, though if I win, will you at the very least explain everything to Inoue-senpai, not as the maestro, but as her mother?" Okisato asked as he sat down.

"Very well. If you can best me, I'll tell her everything," Daria nodded as the board was reset. Once that was done, she opened the game by moving her pawn to e4.

A maniacal grin formed on Okisato's face as he moved his pawn to f5.

Mimoko immediately broke out of her sorrow as she stared at the play. "Tanabe-kun... You wouldn't," she scowled as Daria glared and captured the pawn at f5 with her e-pawn.

"I would!" Okisato grinned as he moved his pawn to g6.

Mimoko stared in disbelief as Daria promptly captured the pawn at g6 with her f-pawn in annoyance, as Okisato captured said pawn with his h-pawn. "You idiot!"
