Chapter 95:
En Passant Grandmaster
Daria stared down at the board and back up at Okisato. "Mocking me is ill advised. Though it seems you are a glutton for punishment so I shall become as cruel as need be," she glared as she moved her queen to g4. Okisato let loose a maniacal grin as he moved his king to f7. "So the first challenger wallows in sorrow, while the second succumbs to insanity. Pathetic," Daria glared as she moved her knight to f3.
Okisato seemed undeterred as he moved his knight to c6. Daria then brought her bishop out to d3 while Okisato moved his rook to h6.
"What the hell is he doing!? He's not taking this seriously at all!" Mimoko thought as Daria moved her knight to c3.
"Now my genius comes to light!" Okisato declared as he moved his knight to f6.
Daria let out a sigh. "Queen f4, pawn e5, knight captures e5, check, knight captures e5, and finally queen captures e5," she thought as all the moves she predicted became reality.
Okisato began to scowl a bit as he moved his pawn to d5, while Daria advanced her knight to b5. Okisato countered the assault by moving his pawn to c6, however, Daria simply moved her knight to c7.
"He's losing that rook," Mimoko thought as Okisato moved his knight to g4.
"Delaying the inevitable won't do you any good, check," Daria glared as she moved her queen to f4, forcing Okisato to move his king to g8.
Daria then promptly captured the rook at a8 with her knight as Okisato moved his pawn to g5. Daria then moved her queen to d4, as Okisato decided to make a bold play, and capture the pawn at h2 with his knight.
"I see you're trying to take my rook, but I won't allow it," Daria thought as she moved her rook to g1. Okisato responded by moving his bishop to g4. "Reckless, your gambit will yield no profit," Daria glared as she moved her pawn to f3.
Undeterred, Okisato captured the pawn at f3 with his bishop.
"That's... Actually a good move. If Okaa-chan captures the bishop with her pawn, she'll lose her queen," Mimoko thought as Daria moved her bishop to f5.
Okisato then moved his bishop to d6 as Daria advanced her king to f2, before shocking everyone and moving his bishop to g4.
"That idiot. He just threw away a bishop," Mimoko glared with disgust as Daria promptly captured the bishop at g4 with her bishop, while Okisato moved his queen to e7.
"Not going to trade bishops? Well, then that was an even stupider move than before," Daria snarled as she moved her bishop to f3.
Suddenly, Okisato burst into maniacal laughter.
"Have you lost it, boy?" Daria glared.
"Yeah, he's-"
"Yes, YOU'VE just lost it!" Okisato laughed as he moved his bishop to c5.
Both Daria's and Mimoko's eyes widened with shock as they gazed at the board.
"Finally, the insanity pays off," Peter grinned.
"Dammit, I was careless, shit," Daria glared as she moved her queen to e3.
"Check, Maestro," Okisato snickered as he captured the queen at e3 with his bishop.
"This is far from over, boy," Daria glared as she captured the bishop at e3 with her d-pawn.
Okisato continued to have a maniacal smile plastered on his face as he captured the bishop at f3 with his knight. Daria didn't seem amused in the slightest as she captured said knight with her king.
"Check!" Okisato snickered as he moved his queen to e4.
Daria clicked her tongue in frustration and moved her king to e2, but after Okisato moved his queen to g4, she was forced to move her king to e1, and then back to e2 after Okisato moved his queen to g3 on his next turn.
"Looks like you're on the ropes, maestro," Okisato snickered as he moved his rook to f6.
Now starting to feel pressured, Daria moved her king to d1, while Okisato moved his rook to f2.
Mimoko began to tremble. "I don't believe it. How is this possible!?"
"You see what I see?" Peter asked as Daria moved her bishop to d2.
"I think I do. I've been with Tanabe-kun long enough to know how he thinks," Mimoko grumbled as Okisato moved his queen to h2.
Daria didn't seem the least bit worried as she promptly moved her pawn to b3. "This isn't over just yet. The possibility for victory still exists and I still have my-"
"Check."
"-Rook. So this is it," Daria sighed as she moved her bishop to e1.
"Looks like she's realized her imminent demise. Barring no blunders, Okisato Tanabe will win," Peter declared as Okisato moved his pawn to d4.
"Yes, I can't believe it. His stupid Důras gambit truly paid off," Mimoko glared as Daria captured said pawn with her d-pawn.
"At high-level chess, matches usually boil down to playing perfectly, which tends to result in draws, usually by repetition. However, insanity can be a natural counter to a genius intellect. Think of it as forcing a supercomputer to be unable to process the moves due to how bad they are, and thus, it falls into the trap," Peter grinned as Okisato captured the pawn at g2 with his rook.
"So you're saying that I'll need to overcome this insanity to truly become the best in the world?"
"Yes, in order to be the best, you must overcome both intellect and insanity, the latter being far more difficult, without being a little insane yourself," Peter maliciously smiled as Daria moved her king to c1 .
"Is this why you have such an interest in Tanabe-kun?"
"Yes. It is easy to find good chess players, but not so easy to find one that is both good and insane at the game. Okisato Tanabe has the potential to become a truly formidable rival," Peter grinned as Okisato captured the pawn at d4 with his queen.
"But if he's capable of this, why has he never beaten you?" Mimoko asked as Daria moved her rook to b1.
"Who do you think crushed him with plays like these before?" Peter maliciously grinned as Okisato moved his rook to g1.
"Th- Then YOU taught him all those reckless moves!?" Mimoko gasped as Daria moved her pawn to c3.
"Yes, I tend to enjoy making insane moves, myself, to liven up the game and make it more of a challenge," Peter grinned as Okisato captured the pawn at c3 with his queen.
"Complete and utter defeat," Daria smiled as she moved her king to d1.
"CHECKMATE! Seems not even a maestro can handle a madman's Důras gambit!" Okisato snickered as he captured the pawn on e1 with his rook, winning the game.
