Chapter 143:
En Passant Grandmaster
As Mimoko sat down across from Wiley, she put forth a proposal. "If I win, then you let Sheila do as she pleases with her life."
"We are making no such bet, is what I'd like to say, but if the president gets word of this, he'll hound me so I'll oblige. As for the match, standard time, you play white, nothing else," Wiley snarled.
"Then let us begin," Mimoko smiled as she opened by moving her pawn to b4.
"And just what is this supposed to be?" Wiley glared as he moved his pawn to e5.
"My form of protest. You shouldn't have put so much pressure on your granddaughter to be good at chess," Mimoko replied as she moved her bishop to b2.
"You don't know anything. Don't speak like some know it all!" Wiley snarled as he captured the pawn at b4 with his bishop.
Mimoko sighed and shook her head. "I'm not like Tanabe-kun or Iori-chan, so I won't play too unorthodox against you. But the fact that you raised Sheila-chan to the point where she hates chess and has even attempted suicide, diminishes my respect for you. Thus, I intend to beat you with a somewhat unorthodox opening," Mimoko stated as she captured the pawn at e5 with her bishop.
"So you're a coward then. That opening is fully playable, and things are relatively even," Wiley scoffed as he moved his knight to f6.
"Like I said, I'm not like those two. I can't quite bring myself to try and win with questionable moves as I don't believe chess is meant to be about disrespecting and desecrating your opponent," Mimoko countered as she moved her knight to c3.
"You really are weak. Do you know what Bobby Fischer loved most about chess?" Wiley asked as he moved his bishop to a5.
"I believe he said many things about chess, but "Chess is life" is probably the quote I most agree with," Mimoko stated as she moved her knight to f3.
"Wrong, what Fischer loved most was the moment he broke a man's ego. THAT is what chess is all about, breaking your opponent's egos and trampling all over them. The same goes for politics, we hate the other side and want them completely eradicated so that we can reign supreme. That's just the way the world works, but I guess it's natural for kids not to understand that," Wiley scoffed as he moved his pawn to d6.
"You're right, I don't understand it. But so what?" Mimoko asked as she captured the knight at f6 with her bishop.
"'So what'!? IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND YOU'LL BE BRAINWASHED BY THOSE DAMN MISERICORDIA FUCKERS THAT'S WHAT!" Wiley fumed as he captured said bishop with his queen.
"Why do you assume that? I have no interest in politics. The closest I'll ever get to it is playing politicians over the board in tournaments or pick-up matches," Mimoko retorted as she moved her knight to d5.
"Those bastards are evil. They murdered my family, Sheila's own parents, and now they brainwash Sheila. Just look at her! She looks like a gangster's whore! Her mind's also rotted to the point where she'd mindlessly march and murder any in her wake, just like those fuckers from back then!" Wiley retorted as he slammed his queen down on e6.
Sheila somberly gazed at the floor as Mimoko sighed and moved her knight to f4. "Does she really?"
Wiley's face contorted in anger as he slammed his queen down on e7. "She sold you out to Desperados, right? That's just as bad as being a part of it. Heck, we call that ordering a hit on someone. And you think she's alright!?"
Mimoko paused as she thought about how to respond. "Perhaps that's my character flaw. I tend to be more forgiving and compassionate, even towards my enemies. Perhaps that's why I've constantly found myself in dire circumstances. Villains like Michiko and Pewler take advantage of my kindness and manipulate it to suit their needs. Perhaps it's the same with Sheila-chan. But I get the picture that Sheila-chan didn't sell us out due to pure hatred. I think it's part of the reason, but I think she was more afraid of Pewler. Sandy-chan even stated that she believed her support of him was more rooted in proving she wasn't like you rather than genuine love and admiration. In fact, it sounds like that was also true for Mililani-chan," she stated as she moved her pawn to c4.
"Then she's a coward, no, she's clearly brainwashed by them Misericordia fuckers. Why else would she join them instead of the Ratiocinatio party?"
"Uh, cuz they're uncool and heartless?" Sheila glared.
"MISERICORDIA PROPAGANDA!" Wiley fumed as he slammed his pawn down on c6.
"This is why both parties suck, they're led by folks like him and Pewler. Though I guess he's got the edge now that Pewler's dead. The whole resignation scandal's also thrown the Misericordia party into disarray. All cuz Pewler didn't appoint a vice-president before he died, meaning the Speaker of the house, Dirk Dunleavy, who's from Wiley's party, is now president. Of course Pewler's running mate, Senator Fiana Kuninganna of New York, is raising a fuss and claiming she should be president as she was to be sworn in as vice-president just before your friend pulled Pewler into a DESPER match, but since she wasn't, Dunleavy's claiming he's got every right to assume the presidency. Ugh, I don't blame Carol for bailing on America, we're fucked," Mariano grumbled as Mimoko moved her pawn to e3.
"Politicians can't be politicians without being complete assholes that ruin everything," Iori glared as Wiley castled king's side.
"For once I agree, but you're still top of my shit list," Mariano glared as Mimoko moved her bishop to e2.
"Though you're not on mine," Iori snickered as Wiley moved his knight to a6.
"Huh? What do you mean by that?"
"You aren't the Desperado, that's why."
Mariano blinked in confusion while Mimoko sighed and castled on the king's side.as Wiley moved his knight to c5. Iori had already told her who the Desperado was, but decided to save the reveal until after someone had beaten Wiley.
"Well, you gonna retort?" Wiley asked as Mimoko moved her pawn to d4.
"No, I'm done arguing. As Tanabe-kun would say, it's pointless. So we'll settle things on the board."
"Who said you could just walk away!? Debate, debate, debate! That's what we do in politics, and when we have arguments in general!" Wiley fumed as he moved his knight to e4.
"Then you're lucky this isn't a fist fight, because I would have socked your jaw long ago," Mimoko huffed as she moved her queen to a4.
"Damn, that was a pretty fire line from her. Sucks this isn't being recorded," Iori growled as she shot Himitsudono a glare.
"As previously stated, the matches are streamed on the WWCF's official secret puzzle cafe channel."
"Yeah, yeah."
Amidst all the banter, the Desperado began to get nervous. Thanks to the summons, they were stuck here and worst of all, they feared Iori might know who they were. "Once the match is over I gotta bail. If the maestros find out I'm a Desperado, I'll be thrown in the WWCF's holding facility. I can't have that. There's still so many people I need to kill."
Back at the chessboard, the game continued with Wiley moving his queen to d8 and Mimoko responding by moving her bishop to d3. Wiley then moved his rook to e8 while Mimoko moved her queen to c2. This prompted Wiley to move his queen to e7 which Mimoko responded to by moving her pawn to h3. After Wiley moved his pawn tob6 and Mimoko moved her f-rook to c1, things were beginning to swing slightly in Mimoko's favor, but the game was far from over, and quickly evened out again after Wiley moved his bishop to f5.
"D5, c5, knight e6, bishop captures e6, bishop captures e4, bishop d7, bishop h7, check, and king h8. If this was a tournament match, I'd expect a draw, but Mimoko is determined to win. I bet it's crucial to Iori's plan too," Daria thought.
The game still showed no signs of a clear winner though. Mimoko moved her bishop to f5, and Wiley promptly captured it with his bishop, however, Mimoko simply captured said bishop with her queen. Wiley moved his king to g8 while Mimoko retreated her knight to h2. Then Wiley initiated a queen trade by moving his queen to e4, which Mimoko accepted and captured said queen with her queen. Wiley then captured said queen with his rook, prompting Mimoko to move her knight to f1. Wiley saw what Mimoko was planning though and quickly retreated his e-rook to e8.
"Ugh, so boring. This is why I play crazy openings," Iori groaned as Mimoko moved her pawn to g4.
"I looked up games with those openings and on average, they end in draws at top level," Sherbert huffed as Wiley moved his pawn to g6.
"Probably because those aren't my games. When I play those moves, I win," Iori gloated as Mimoko moved her knight to g3.
"Then I have my work cut out," Sherbert glared as Wiley moved his bishop to d2.
"Guess so, since you're not the Desperado."
"Of course I'm not! Katie isn't either!"
"Hmm?"
Katie began to get a bit nervous as Iori shot her a malicious smirk.
"It would be pretty crazy if it was her since that would mean she put up an Oscar-winning performance, but she's clean."
Katie let out a sigh of relief as did Sherbert.
The Desperado on the other hand was only getting more nervous. "Shit, if she really is narrowing it down. I was the only other one there. D- Did she already tell the maestros? Is this all theater? No, there must be some greater significance."
"Now as for you, you've been pretty antsy since everyone showed up," Iori smirked as she turned towards Hazel.
"I'm not a Desperado! I hate them!"
"Could be an act, but I know better. You were all giddy that hippie- er, now buzzed hippie, seemingly died, but since she didn't things are awkward."
Katie shot Hazel a glare as Hazel averted her eyes. "I- I wasn't thinking-"
"Yeah, yeah, I know you're not the Desperado. But I ain't smoothing things over between you and hippie, unless ya want me shaving you both bald for a video."
The game still showed no sign of a clear victor as Mimoko moved her rook to c2 and Wiley moved his bishop to a5. Mimoko then moved her king to f1 as Wiley moved his a-rook to d8. After Mimoko moved her pawn to a3, Wiley decided to move his king out to g7. Mimoko also decided to bring her king out and moved it to e2, prompting Wiley to move his rook to e5.
"Well things look like they will take a while, so Sheila, I have a question. Mimoko said you hated me and were glad to hear my son was murdered. Why is that?" Daria asked as Mimoko moved her pawn to f4.
"Because I hate that you raised your daughter in such a loving way. You didn't pressure her into pursuing chess, heck you even supported her when she started making chess her hobby. I was jealous. I wanted a parent like you, no I had parents like you, but they were killed. That fossil's wrong though. I'm not like the scum who murdered them, b- But if I called them out on it, they'd murder me too," Sheila trembled.
"Are things really that volatile in America?"
"With Pewler in charge of things, yes. But now that he's gone, I'm scared to find out. They might scapegoat me as a traitor since I'm that fossil's granddaughter."
Katie and Sandy gently patted Sheila on her shoulders.
"Are you forgetting? Compassion is a core tenet of the Misericordia mantra. If there's heartless scum that would senselessly murder folks because of who they're related to, they're heartless trash that doesn't belong in the party," Katie smiled.
"Yeah, you're one of the most compassionate girls I know. If they give you hell, I'll stand by your side, and kick their asses if they give you hell," Sandy nodded.
"I'll join you too!" Sherbert chimed.
"Ngh, I don't believe Sheila is treasonous, but if the party believes so, I shall support their decision," Clifford huffed.
Katie glared and promptly kicked him in the crotch, downing him instantly. "Perhaps Pewler's death was a blessing in disguise. It's now showing how morally bankrupt the core base of our party is."
"So you're gong to try and reform?" Carol asked.
"Now's a good time. Sure our party's definitely getting trounced in the election, but that will allow us to rebuild ourselves up as a true party of compassion and the people in time for the next election."
"Then I wish you luck, but even if you reform the party to the point where it issues a public apology to me, I'll never go back to America."
"Thanks for the reminder. With all these revelations that have came to light I've felt like my whole world view shattered. It also told me you were right all along. I'll never forgive your friend for humiliating me and Mililani, but I will at least apologize to you on behalf of what little influence I have within the Misericordia party."
"Apologizing won't bring back Christian, but I also think the entire party and all it's members shouldn't be blamed for the actions of a radical faction. I forgive you Katie."
Tears began to pour out of Katie's eyes as she nodded in approval.
Back at the chessboard, things still were still just as they were before. Wiley had spent a good chunk of time thinking and finally decided to move his rook to e7. Mimoko almost instantly moved her king to d3 while Wiley responded by moving his pawn to a6.
"Rook a1, rook a8, h4, a-rook e8, e4, rook a8, h5, rook b7, h captures g6, f captures g6, e5, rook f8? Hmm, things are starting to turn in Mimoko's favor," Daria thought.
Mimoko also began to sense that she had an advantage and moved her king to e4. Wiley decided to capture the pawn at e5 with his d-pawn, prompting Mimoko to capture said pawn with her f-pawn. Wiley moved his b-rook to f7, while Mimoko moved her knight back to e2. Sensing an opportunity, Wiley moved his rook to f2, but Mimoko didn't seem to care and advanced her pawn to d6. Wiley didn't let up though and decided to target the pawn on g4 as well by moving his rook to g2, however, Mimoko didn't care and advanced her king to d5. Committed to the attack, Wiley moved his f-rook to f2, but once again, Mimoko didn't care and advanced her pawn to e6. This led to Wiley making the fatal counterplay of moving his king to f8.
"And now I clean up," Mimoko thought as she moved her knight to f4.
This allowed Wiley to capture the took on c2 he had his eyes on, but Mimoko countered by capturing the rook on g2 with her knight. Even though Wiley swiftly captured said knight with his rook, that move would ultimately seal his fate.
"Check," Mimoko stated as she moved her rook to f1 causing Wiley to scowl.
"Damn her, now she's going to win. Still, I'll fight to the bitter end," Wiley thought as he moved his king to g7.
Mimoko then advanced her pawn to d7 while Wiley moved his pawn to b5, and after Mimoko moved her pawn to e7, mate was inevitable for Wiley. However, that was only barring no blunders.
"Check!" Wiley shouted as he moved his rook to d2.
Mimoko however was not making any blunders and moved her king to c6. Wiley didn't let up though and moved his rook to d1 while Mimoko moved her rook to f8. Wiley desperately moved his rook to e1, but it wasn't in time to stop Mimoko from moving her pawn to e8 and promoting it to a queen. Wiley desperately moved his rook to e6, but Mimoko countered perfectly and moved her king to d5.
Now with little choice, Wiley sacrificed his rook by moving it to e5, and after Mimoko captured said rook with her king, he moved his bishop to c7 on his next turn. However, that was all Wiley could do as after Mimoko moved her king to e4, he could no longer delay the checkmate and dejectedly moved his pawn to h5.
"I remember something else Fischer once said," Mimoko stated as she moved her rook to g8.
"And that is?" Wiley growled as he moved his king to h7.
""If I win I'm a genius. If I don't, I'm not." I guess since you lost, that means you're not a genius. Checkmate," Mimoko declared as she captured the pawn at g6 with her queen, winning the game.
Wiley sighed as he rose and pulled out his WWCF card. "Well done. You have legally and soundly beaten me, and as such you reap the following spoils of war. First, the badge signifying you've bested me. Second, a bounty of 10,000 points, and finally rematch rights for only 10 points."
"And you get to allow Sheila to do what she wants with her life," Mimoko smiled.
"Yes, yes. Now, enough of the charades. I'm aware there's a Desperado present, but who is it?"
"I thought maestros could check that stuff," Iori asked.
"We can see DESPER match data, but if the one activating the DESPER isn't playing, we don't have the authority to view that data. Only the president wields such power."
"In that case, I'll reveal the Desperado," Iori snickered as she stood over Clifford and pulled out a DESPER key.
