Chapter 11:
Tsurihito's Bride
We quickly got out of the waters and removed our diving gears. What Teiji said was true, though I hoped it to be false. My friends got out of the waters one after the other when their oxygen tank ran out of gas.
Its about 2 AM now... we have waited for two and a half hours. My friends stopped emerging from the sea about half an hour ago. We counted the heads. We were about seventy students, but only 57 were here with us. Somethings wrong. 13 people are missing.
Wait no, its 14 people... sensei haven't emerged yet. What was happening...
"No..." Takuma fell down on his knees. "This can't be happening... Miko and Maya-chan is not here..." His fists clenched, as he looked down at the wooden deck. "You... it's all your fault..."
He looked at me. That's when I realised, that if I haven't gone after Airi-chan, they would not have disappeared. It's all my fault... what do I do now? I wish I have died with them... carrying this burden, along with Airi disappearing is too much for me to carry.
But it might all end here. I saw Takuma charging at me with his fists. But hopes were lost as soon as I felt it. Satoshi, the class rep and some others stopped him before he could do anything to me.
"This won't solve anything, Takuma." I heard Teiji. "We all are worried about it."
"The heck you are!!!", I could see tears on his eyes now. "You wouldn't have gone by his decision if you were!!"
I was shocked. Why was Teiji not answering? Is Airi-chan that unimportant to them??
I mustered up my courage to speak up. "Because Airi-chan-"
"Shut up with your 'Airi-chan'!!! It's all because of her too!!!"
I felt a stab on my heart. Adrenaline rushed inside me again. Now I was angry, but Teiji was keeping me down.
"Let me go, Teiji. I will teach this womaniser a lesson.", I struggled his grip. I don't use these kinds of words. I don't know why I did now.
"Shut up Katsuhito. Keep you mouth shut. This won't do any good." Satoshi yelled at me.
"Sensei is gone too because of you!!", Takuma again stabbed me by his words. Satoshi gripped both his hands tighter. Takuma screamed in pain.
"You two say another word, I will take care of both of you myself. Now shut up!"
No words came from us or others. I looked around. All of the students looked at me, not Takuma, with disappointed faces. Those eyes, the ones whom I called my friends just a few moments ago, now looked... so distant... some of them fell in tears. How many friends have I taken away from them? How many lovers have I separated? How many talents have I wasted? How am I going to carry such a burden my whole life?
I am dying of remorse about their loss, but who is going to do the same for mine? Why is no one even thinking of Airi-chan? I don't know now... and I don't have the energy to think about that...
"We will go the the hotel for tonight.", Satoshi gathered all of their attention. "We will start searching tomorrow, but we won't go to the sea."
Satoshi explained what happened to the bus driver— who was a local— what happened. He didn't ask much, anything at all and took us where we came from. The atmosphere of the bus was so heavy that I felt I am going to suffocate. Airi-chan would help me during this times but she was gone too...
"Breathe, Katsuhito.", Teiji was constantly reminding me, examining my condition. I was forgetting to breathe, such a simple task.
Teiji was sitting beside me in the front of the car, and Satoshi and Takuma was at the back, where Takuma sat with his hands on his face. I feel bad for calling him a womaniser... I was at fault, he didn't deserve it... I want to apologise, but I feel like I am going to die in this atmosphere.
We entered into the fancy hotel, but this time nothing was fancy. It looked dull, monochrome. There wasn't a single sound from our side. The receptionist old lady sat at the far back, with her glasses low on her eyes.
"You guys are late, dinner is running cold.", she said softly. But that was heard by all of us. Her eyes narrowed. "Isn't there less of you now?" I could see her faintly smiling before it faded away.
"Just a rumour... someone said." She looked down at the reception book. "Guess I shouldn't make fun of it. But I guess you got your lesson. This place is not normal."
"We will be going to our rooms.", Satoshi explained, before looking at us. "Do anyone of you want to eat?"
There were no answers from us. Who could eat in such a mood?
