Shattered

It was as though I were watching, stuck behind glass and frozen in place. The green light tore through the air, connecting midway with the silver blade.
The scream that tore through my throat was silenced, the memory ephemeral, but the pain that echoed through my body was not. I could feel it as the metal was wrenched from his chest, then shoved back in. I could hear his screams, his everything, but he could not hear mine.
A one-way mirror, it had been described.
But no, that wasn't right.
This was something else.
