Sincere Pretenses

Shizuka's got a problem, and her name is Collette. The two have been best friends since middle school, but Shizuka wants to be more than friends—much more.

Ever since entering high school, however, Collette has developed sadistic tendencies. She flirts with boys, enticing them to approach her romantically, only for her to openly mock their feelings. It's as if she disdains the very concept of love itself.

Recently though, Collette has turned her efforts toward Shizuka, seemingly aware of Shizuka's true feelings. But if Shizuka confesses, she'll be subjected to the same treatment as the boys, and their friendship will be over.

Denying her feelings is difficult, but she'll do anything to stay by Collette's side.

Anything.

This story starts off going to some dark places. At first, it might seem like it's criticizing the concept of LGBTQ+ pride, but nothing could be farther from the truth. I assure you, the ending is positive.

At its core, this is a story about two girls' learning to accept their feelings for each other—the good and the bad—and learning to accept that those feelings are a part of themselves. But also about going beyond self-acceptance and taking pride in yourself, even if you're not proud if everything you are, or everything you've done.

Pride doesn't come easy. It takes a lot of work. Sometimes, you need to put in the effort to be a better person, but a lot of the time, it takes even more effort to see how wonderful you already are.

We all deserve to hold our heads high and be proud of who we love.

Happy Pride 2024.
