When the Cold War turned hot, it did not, as many feared, engulf the entire world in flames—just most of it. After tragedies caused by nuclear weapons in proxy theaters, both sides banned their use.
The fighting continued for centuries. War became merely another inevitability, like death and taxes.
When Earth could no longer possibly survive war, peace came. Much of the world had been reduced to barren wasteland, covered by a poisonous, corrosive miasma.
One nation started a program to genetically engineer plants that would cleanse the miasma and a new breed of miasma-resistant humans to tend them—humans with cat ears and tails.
Not everyone was happy with peace, and a group of breakaway militants built a nuclear bomb.
Sprout is a catgirl bored with life in the wastelands. When she stumbles upon the bomb, she must carry it across Europe to where it can be dismantled, but to do so, she'll have to evade the militants and cross the treacherous wastelands.

Still trying to figure out the chapter schedule. For now, two chapters a week, but I may have to increase that to finish before the contest deadline.
