I give the novel an overall score of 7/10. There were interesting concepts in the novel, though I also felt some concepts felt underutilized and could be expanded.
As of the end of volume 1, it was a story that focused on the main character, Kuroha, and her relationship with her missing aunt, Inorin. I liked the idea that when Kuroha is in the Daikon game world, all her memories with Inorin are manifested into different weapons used to fight enemies. It creates openings to show Inorin’s past and why these memories were valuable to Kuroha.
Kuroha is definitely the best character. When dealing with unfamiliar characters, her rowdy personality is entertaining to watch, especially as she navigates the new world with confusion. I also like the powers that she uses. The different abilities manifested from memories of Inorin were creative, such as using natto as a web attack. However, this might be intentional for the story, but I was hoping some of her abilities could be reused throughout the story. It was cool seeing new abilities, but it also made it seem like she gets a power specifically to counter the one situation she is in, and never needs it again.
Peng is like a pet or child. Therefore, both it and Kuroha are unconditionally friendly from the start. Peng is like a representation of Kuroha’s nostalgic memories, so it makes sense they quickly bonded. However, being a penguin, it is limited to how it can interact with Kuroha. While I understand it is practically mute (aside from saying "Peng"), I felt Peng was more of a living weapon than a partner most of the time. Especially during battles, it felt like Peng provides the abilities, and Kuroha does the work.
I liked the conflict about how people who use their powers to fight the monsters ironically end up creating a larger threat. It made some good, intense situations where Kuroha really needs to decide which characters are actually her allies, and what is actually the right thing for her to do. Does she fight the black legs despite what she was told? Which people can be trusted? I felt that made the story interesting. I wished for more scenes like that.
My main issue when reading the story is that I felt a lot of scenes or actions tend to abruptly start or end. Like a passage would involve Kuroha doing something to kill an enemy, yet the text feels casual when explaining it. And then the story goes on with me feeling “Oh wait, the battle is over now? Okay then”. I feel some writing could be stretched a little more to give a better transition from one scene to the next. Additionally, some scenes could have more intense detail to get a better feel of situations, such as some of the action scenes.
Overall, I felt it was a nice isekai story that has a good premise and concepts, yet has the potential to improve. Kuroha still needs to find Inorin, and there are still more mysteries to solve in the game world, so a second volume would be needed to answer them.
