Spirits, Comedy, and Bunz

Honestly, 'En Egui Exorcist' is a masterclass in writing humour into a world using the insanity already present in it. From start to finish, Gurg delivers a hilarious quip one after the other, keeping the reader laughing in the face of certain death. Between the levity of very human interactions and the action-packed magical combat scenes, this story is a rollercoaster of entertainment that will keep your heart pumping from start to finish.

Hoshino, a smartassed rookie exorcist, starts the story off with comedy by distributing matcha buns to his colleagues at a crime scene and coining his popular catch phrase of 'deez bunz'! He is quickly thrown into the thick of it, dealing with an agitated spirit and showing just how challenging the job could be. But, as we see time and again, when met with insurmountable odds and life-or-death situations, Hoshino responds with a witty remark and a 'go-screw-yourself' attitude. The character is likeable, relatable, and honestly, very human for a world filled with horrible monsters and a risk of death, making the reader wonder if he was bolted in the head one too many times before the story even begins.

As I said in the beginning, this story is absolutely RICH with comedy. Every chapter brings at least one or two jokes or relatable situations that engage the reader in this fantastical world. It feels like this could be happening down the block, and with a click of record, the reader could be posting these videos on YouTube by the end of the day. The real-world references tie the reader into the story and give little easter eggs into the thought process of Hoshino, Hazama, and Ishigami. Whether it be jokes about needing to drink too much coffee to simply exist, or being a macho-mother-father, Gurg keeps the laughs coming and doesn't let up!

Now, when it comes to combat, this is the area in which Gurg truly exceeds expectations. The way that he describes his fight scenes is gritty, visceral, and yet beautiful and satisfying. He has a way with words that puts you in Hoshino's shoes and lets you know exactly what is going through his mind as he pushes past his limits. Combat isn't just one and done! It goes on for chapters, taking time to build suspense and really sink the reader into the moment. And, when that final shot comes, there is more to follow! Just when you think you're out, like any good video game, the boss finally shows themself and the true battle begins. Trust me when I say that if comedy isn't your thing, then the action is more than enough to make EEE worth a read.

I've decided to give 'En Egui Exorcist' 5/5 stars because it truly shone as a fantastic and gripping story that keeps you wondering until the end! Twists and turns are commonplace, comedy is plentiful, and action is intense. Gurg has a talent for writing likeable characters, and this story is no exception. So, when you're ready, grab yourself some bunz, a nice bottle of sake, and put on your best French maid uniform before diving into this gem of a story!
