Synopsis

For the last 160 years, the Empire of Avalon has been ruled by Yvaine, a living legend who freed the realm from the influence of a Tyrant. But over time, her status as a hero has faded, each generation beginning to want new rulers. War has not helped the matter, the last ten years embroiled in conflict and loss has harmed morale. Gilfred Dalmaine, her ward and a captain of armies, has returned from the war a hero, but shaken.

Meanwhile, Marian, a widowed healer, moves to ther capitol city of Valhaven with her four children. As she settles into her life, she finds a place with the Imperial Healers, and maybe another chance at love. But she's hiding secrets which affect not only her life but the the Empire as a whole.

The only question is: will she be able to get out unscathed?
