Demons live separately from humans. Sometimes the less intelligent demons will wander into human society and cause problems, and usually they are unaware when a humanesque demon dwells among them for a time, so there isnt much experience with them. And demons were a threat in the past and are believed to still be a threat to humanity.

As for Lilac being saved... we'll have to wait and see 👀

Demons are seen as entities of pure evil that will destroy humanity, so they are treated more like pests than actual people. Which only some of them are people. There are a lot of lesser intelligent demons that are more animal like
