To clarify things.
Before the era of mechanized clocks, timekeeping was done by having a candle of a specific size burned in a specific manner. Assumption was that each candle burns for the same period. Of course, Tanai quickly standardized these candles across their home peninsula and started exporting sets of 'standard candles' all over the continent. The informal unit of 'Candle' became a factual standard.
With the advent of portal technology in the late 14th century, and the requirement of precise timekeeping and synchronization the name was simply re-used.
Same goes for a 'Drip' which is a reference of a drip of water from a water clock.
Triskol comes, etymologically, from a three-score - or sixty drips.
For you as reader - a 'candle' is about a hour, a 'triskol' is a minute and 'drip' is a second.
