As you may noticed knowing languages is a thing in this world
They don't have any universal language that everyone knows so sometimes characters may struggle with understanding each other
Language of the traders slowly takes role of universal language but it is still far from being there. Educated people will probably speak it to some extend and most people can say few words in it but it is far from being universal. It is pretty common for neighboring groups of people to know each other language
Kareshi language
It is really interesting as it can be spoken or signed
interchangeably and people use it in both form in their everyday lives, switching between spoken and signed Kareshi
So yes, Eru is able to speak but probably to afraid and traumatized to make a sound. Therefore she uses signs for most of the time
Sami is actually diminutive of Alsamiradin but she rightfully assumed that barbarians would not be able to pronounce her name so she offered short form, that in her culture would only be used to address young children
