I would say Elaina does not believe she can be fully redeemed for what she did, even despite losing her grandmother. That was when she would have faced her guilt fully, at its precipice and at her lowest point back then. But now, I’d say she constantly reminds herself of her past abuse of magic, and her tragic loss, to drive her current desire to prove she and her powers aren’t something to be feared. Her time with Jacen reinforces this, since Jacen is really the first person who accepted her for who she is, even if he understands little to nothing about magic. You could say Elaina’s desire to subdue Vanessa Vilana (Bloodletter) and her goal of defeating Doctor Molecruel alongside Jacen are, in her way, the proof she needs to forgive herself—and to prove to her grandmother and the Supreme Ones that she isn’t the same when she was a kid, but a better version of herself. So, Elaina may not fully believe it, but victory against Bloodletter and Molecruel would be more than enough for a proper redemption. That is, if either could be achieved haha
Thanks a lot for your comment, by the way! Really got me thinking about Elaina’s character more. I feel I could write a whole character analysis on her way of thinking, but I hope my response made sense! I’m glad you liked the subchapter!
