You've sort of put into words something I've been thinking lately. Looking back, I think a lot of the stuff I've been posting is no longer representative of my best work. Honestly, I may have to take a break from Detective Yamamoto just to reread/edit/rewrite a bunch of it that no longer works.

For what it's worth, you previous comment about the police holding off due to a potential important connection to one of the street racers was a much better angle than the one I ultimately took. I guess I was hoping to convey that the police were swamped and the intervention of Detective Yamamoto plus the severity of the situation actually got them working.

This story is over. I really like adding a little bit of supernatural ambiguity. The idea of the mermaid being a ruse to entice tourists is an interesting idea I hadn't thought of, however.

In retrospect, this is something I might have left a little too unclear in the beginning. Detective Yamamoto has a habit of not always charging people for cases when she deems it appropriate, but she does normally collect a payment for cases she solves, even if I don't give a specific number.
