Author's Note on the World of This Story:
The Institute for Unmapped Places has no address because it is not in a place. It is in the act of looking. The atlas is not in any library because it is not yet finished. The symbol on the cover — the opened circle — appears, for anyone who knows to look for it, in the margins of certain very old maps, in the decorative borders of certain medieval manuscripts, in the architectural ornaments of buildings in cities that do not match the chronology of their surroundings. This is not coincidence. The world leaves evidence everywhere, for everyone. The question is only whether you have learned to read the right atlas.
