Some interesting points being brought up here, and i think i will throw my hat in the ring to sustain a interesting discussion and represent a view that had the opposite experience, although I'm glad we all agree on the pristine character writing.
It mirth be because I'm a movie buff and consume things in quite a visual manner but i do like the way you paint a room through the people occupying it, almost in a screenwriting way. harvesting that character writing strength. Like the way you described Paul with his writing and the attitude towards the space around him immediately set a vivid image of what kind of room he would create for himself, likewise with the bar in a later chapter. Not much flowery language was given to the bar itself, but the type of people and their activities very much inferred what type of space they would occupy and create for themselves.
i'm not saying one should ignore the criticisms appear, there migth be some good middleground somewhere but i do think there is some merit to this approach. INteresting to see how this develops as we go on.
