Chapter 2:

Sushi

Riddle Night

I didn't sleep well last night because of that odd phone call. I honestly don't think much of it, it's probably a prank call or something.
"Mom, I'm leaving."
"Have a nice day, sweetie."
"Oh Katie, wait! Don't forget your notebook!" I took the notebook. "Thank you, Lena." I smiled.

Lena is my older sister. She is older than me by 3 years. Lena has light brown hair and dark brown eyes, and she's really pretty.
"Okay, I'm going now." I waved at my mom and sister.

My school is pretty close so I always go walking there, and as I was walking, I saw that ginger cat again. Does this cat always hang out around here?  I opened my bag and gave it a piece of my bread. The cat stared and me for a second giving me its sparkly eyes, then started eating. The cat doesn't seem to have an owner, but it isn't skinny like most stray cats. Is someone feeding it?

"Good morning, Julie."
"Good morning, Katie."
"What do we have for first class?" I asked.
Julie looked at her schedule " The creepy teacher, Leo."
"And which Teacher is Leo again?"
"The English teacher, you dummy." Julie Laughed
"Sorry! I'm really bad with names."
"You were able to memorize my name quickly."
"It's because you always talk to me! I had to remember it!"
Julie giggled.
"That reminds me, Julie I want to ask you about something. When I was collecting the papers-"

Brrring!
"Looks like the bell rang. What do you want to ask me?"
" Never mind, I'll ask you late.r"

I could barely even concentrate on my classes and at some point, everything went black.

"Katie, Katie, KATIE!" I woke up in shock. "It's recess, aren't you gonna eat?" asked Julie " What's wrong? Did you stay up all night on your phone or something?"
I laughed, "Something like that."
"Didn't you want to ask me something?"
"Hm?"
"In the morning, you said you wanted to ask me about something."
"Oh, Right! When I was collecting the papers for the assignment yesterday I came across your paper,  it said you wanted to be a fashionista, is that true?"
"You saw that?" Julie blushed, " Yeah, it's true. But I don't think it's gonna work out."
"Why?" I asked.
"Well, I'm not good with these types of things; I don't know how to design stuff and I don't have a creative mindset."
"No, you'll be great! I promise!"
"Y-you really think so?" Julie started to tap her fingers together.
"Yes!"
"Thank you. But what about you, Katie?"
"What?"
"What did you write as your dream job?"
"Oh!" I smiled nervously. "Don't laugh, ok?" I started to blush, "I-I want to be a detective."
"THAT WORKS PERFECTLY!" Everyone stared at her because she was extremely loud. Julie cleared her throat, "Ahem hem, That w-works perfectly"
I was trying to hold in my laughter. However, a small chuckle came out.
"What are you giggling about?" Julie's face went red.
"I'm sorry, I can't hold it in any longer!"  I started laughing until my stomach hurt.
"Stop that!" Julie's face was getting even redder.
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I couldn't help it." I wiped the tears from my eyes. "You were saying?"
Julie looked frustrated; she turned her head to the window, "All I said was that it fits perfectly because you're always good at that mafia game."

"A detective you say?" Kai smirked, "Are you good at detective work?"
I froze, my face started to heat up, "WHY WERE YOU LISTENING TO OUR CONVERSATION?!" I yelled.
"I walking past and I overheard." Kai stated. "And besides, I want to know more about you, Katie."
"There is nothing there for you to know about!" I stormed out of the classroom.

Honestly, this Kai guy is so annoying; he doesn't give me any space! Last time I was in the library trying to do study for my exam, and he came out of nowhere and started talking to me! He started to talk about how he does his hair in the morning and how many girls he had at once. He's seriously so cocky. But I might be judging before actually getting to know him.

When it was time to go home, I went to the lockers to get my stuff. Then I saw Kai and one of the people he hangs out with, I'm not good with names but I think it was Rio? It seems that Kai told him something and made him laugh and they started coming towards me. I started to get a little nervous.
"I heard you want to be a detective." Rio laughed. "Are you really fit for the job?" I gave Kai a look and rushed out of the school building, I heard him call out my name but I ignored him. How could he tell people?! He went too far this time!! I was trying to hold in my tears but I could already feel them dripping down.

"I'm home."
"Welcome back, sweetie! How was school today?"
"It was fine."
"Fine? Why was it not good?"
I smiled at my mom, "No, It was good."
I shouldn't have lied to my mom but I can't help it; I don't want her to worry about me. She is already going through a lot.
 "I'm going to my room."

I was watching tv shows on my laptop when I heard a knock on my door.
"Katie, Kai is at the front door; he wants to talk to you."
"Tell him I'm busy!" Lena gave me a weird look, "What? Are you two in a fight? Or are you in a bad mood?"
"Just tell him I'm BUSY!!"
"Okay! Okay! Sheesh! You are definitely in a bad mood!"
I glared at Lena and she slammed the door.
"No, you're in a bad mood." I said to myself.

It was the next day, and I'm truly still mad at Kai. I don't know how I'm gonna face him.
"Hey, Katie." said Julie "How are you?"
From the corner of my eye, I saw Kai. And when he noticed me, he came over to me.
"Katie, I want to apologize about yesterday-" I gave him the cold shoulder.
"Julie, let's go to class" I took Julie by the hand and started walking.
Julie looked confused, "Huh? What's going on? Am I missing something here?"

"So, you and Kai are in a fight?"
"Y-yes."
Julie shook her head, "You guys should make up! There is no time for arguments!"
"Yeah, I know" I sighed. "It's just that... He went and told people about my dream. I don't want people to know about it. Especially my mom; She would freak out if she ever found out."
"Why don't you explain to him why it made you so upset?"
"Should I?"
"Yes! So he understands what he should not tell people."
"Yes, I think you're right! I'll do that if I don't chicken out."
"What, You're scared?"
"Kind of..."

School was finally over and I went walking as normal. And after a few steps, I saw the ginger cat again.
Meow. Meow. Okay, okay, I'll feed you. Instead of giving it bread, as usual, I crouched down and gave it a biscuit instead. I decided to observe the cat while it was eating. The cat is so peaceful.
"Do you like cats?" I Turned around and saw Kai. I wanted to leave but I decided I should face him.
"Katie, about yesterday, I'm sorry!"
"That was so not cool! It was hard enough to tell my friend, and you went and overheard?! Not only that, but you even told your friend about it!"
"I know! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!"
"It's fine now. Just please don't tell anyone else about it. It's embarrassing." I started blushing.
"I won't."
"Then we are good now."
"Really?
"Yes..."

Kai crouched down beside me. He held the cat's paw
"I see you've met Sushi."
"Sushi?"
"I gave her that name"
"You know this cat?"
" Yes, I always give her food before and after school but it seems like someone is feeding her as well. Was it you?"
"Yeah."
"Thank you for taking care of her!"
I blushed "I-it's no problem"
Kai picked up the cat, "Here, why don't you hold her"
I started to panic, "I'd rather not! I don't want to hurt her by accident or anything!!"
"No,  you won't hurt her. Here." Kai gave put the cat on my lap.
"No! I can't; I'm scared if I-" I looked at the cat then felt at ease.  "She's really cute." I stated.
Kai had love in his eyes when he was looking at the cat. It seems like he really likes this cat. I knew he had a good side to him, and I shouldn't have judged him so soon.

"Why don't you adopt the cat?" I asked.
"I wish I could but I can't; my mom is allergic to cats." Kai frowned.
He seemed really hurt so I suggested something, "Why don't we visit her after school together every day?!"
Kai was shocked then he smiled, "I'd love to."

The next day after school, me and Kai started walking together to see the cat.
"Did you bring Sushi anything?" Kai asked.
"Yes, I brought her some tuna." Kai grabbed the tuna from my hand. "HEY!" I yelled.
"Tuna isn't good for cats; it could cause them mercury poisoning."
" Ah, I'm sorry! I don't have much knowledge of animals."
" No, it's fine! I'll bring her the food from now on, okay?"
I sighed, "Okay..."

When we arrived at the destination, Kai and I froze. We saw something very grim. I turned my head and I couldn't look at it any longer. Instead of seeing Sushi the cat on the garbage can. We saw a pool of blood under it where Sushi was crushed.
