Chapter 32:
Two in the Abandoned House
When the stream ended and Misaki happened to glance over at Sayuri and Shinobu, she found the two of them asleep, nestled close together.
“…Huh? Ghosts sleep? Misaki-san, did you know that?”
Yuka let out a startled voice as she quietly filmed the sleeping pair.
“I’m not sure about Sayuri, but Shinobu does take naps now and then. —Hey, how many pictures are you taking?”
“This is totally gonna go viral!”
Grinning to herself, Yuka kept her phone clicking without pause.
“No one would ever think they’re ghosts. Even looking at them now, they’re sleeping so normally it’s unbelievable.”
Misaki said that as she took a sip.
“Wait… huh?”
Yuka froze mid-shot and looked at Misaki.
“Oh—right. That kind of drawback…”
She was checking the photos when—
“Well, they’re cute—so it’s all good! People of the world, tremble before our mascot girls!”
After a while, Sayuri woke up.
“Ghosts sleep too, huh?”
Yuka immediately threw the question at her.
“Yeah. I don’t have to sleep, but I’ll nap when I feel like it. And when I’m really exhausted, I can’t recover unless I do.”
She floated up lightly and stretched wide in the air.
“Hey, hey—do you dream?”
Yuka’s eyes sparkled with excitement.
“I do. Especially after something scary happens, I tend to. And it feels like I see things from when I was alive too… but I forget everything once I wake up.”
Cross-legged in midair, she drifted gently back and forth.
“So you’re just like humans.”
Yuka snapped a photo of her with her phone.
“Well, I used to be human. So I still get pulled along by the habits I had when I was alive. Like, normally I’d pass right through a chair, but if I think ‘I’m gonna sit,’ I can sit on it. And if I focus on ‘I’m gonna touch this,’ I can touch things too. There’s no actual sensation, though—it only looks that way.”
“I see, I see.”
In the days that followed, the photos of the two sleeping faces received countless comments like “So soothing” and “This is precious.”
Very few people believed they were paranormal photos, though. Some even pointed at stains on the wall and insisted, with a straight face, “This is the spirit.”
Meanwhile, the photo of Sayuri sitting cross-legged in midair ended up shelved after Misaki’s review.
The reason was that her underwear was perfectly visible.
