Chapter 58:
Magical Girl - Cyber Ronin
I stared through the fourth storey window of the wrecked skyscraper, watching the two blood-stained girls slowly make their way out of the complex. The glass in the window half-reflected my own visage back at me: a cat with fur split evenly between black and white.
“Our lasses really pulled it aff, eh?”
A familiar voice broke the silence. One that originated from the yellow cat with spiky fur that stood alongside me.
“I knew they would. All along, I knew it.”
“Did thae premonitions o yers tell ye so?”
“No, nothing like that. I just had faith.” I turned my head and addressed our other companions. “I’m… sorry that your girls didn’t make it.”
“My heart will ache for my lady Ryou, but she accepted this risk when she entered this business. It would not do to be crippled by mourning,” said Higgs, lowering his head in a respectful bow.
“Nabiki would never forgive me if I sat around moping over her death. That girl knew what she was doing. I won’t disrespect her sacrifice by letting it stop me from my goal,” added Charm, shaking her head slowly.
“So, you two are certain about this? You’re going off on your own?” I asked.
“A magical guide’s life is dedicated to one purpose. Lending our power to one we consider worthy, and training them in its use. There is no other option. We must search for our next partners,” said Higgs. "Besides, now that Z and W's magical girls have been killed, I'm certain they'll be searching for their next pair. We cannot allow them to get ahead of us."
“I understand… but I’ll miss you both.”
“You don’t gotta miss a thing, honey,” said Charm. “We’re always gonna be with you in some way, ain’t we?”
“I suppose you’re right. Just… stay safe out there, yeah?”
“You got it, baby. And just call any time, we’ll come back for ya.”
Charm and Higgs both bowed their heads, then slinked away into the darkness. Electron and I were left alone.
“So… you’re really not going back to Fujiko?” I asked.
“Ah wis there tae steer her alang the right road. Nou she’s found it hersel. The lass disnae need me any mair.”
“You’re not gonna miss her? You two were together for six years, after all.”
“O course Ah'll miss her, but juist like tha’ pair, Ah've got wark tae dae. Besides, ye're hardly one tae talk. Ye're no plannin tae go back either.”
“Ah- it was that obvious?”
“A've kent ye for long enough tae ken when somethin's on yer mind. There’s somethin ye hae tae dae first, isna there?”
“...my brother and I need to have a bit of a family chat for a while. Could be days. Could be years. Either way, it’s not something I should be dragging Toki into.”
“Ye dinnae think tha’ two could use yer help?”
“Actually… something tells me they’ll be just fine on their own…”
For just a few seconds more, Electron and I stared out that window, watching as the two girls we had raised all this time disappeared into the distance.
Yeah. I think they’re gonna be alright.
