Prologue

In 205x a brume fell over the land of Japan and its surroundings. People were unable to communicate both inside and outside the country and in the mistful darkness, they felt dread. Then, from the brume came spectres, invisible beings which terrorized and slaughtered humans. The few who survived reunited in skerries, safe "islands" of land surrounded by the brume.

As the months passed, some of the human survivors started displaying magical powers and began to fight back against the spectres.

In 206x, magical wielding humans killed the first spectres, causing the brume to recede where they were killed. With that, skerries expanded and connected. The magic warriors organized into the Nippon Liberation Force (NLF) and started the war known as the Reconquest.

In 207x, as the Reconquest succeeded and expanded the liberated country, Japan became known as Nippon Nouveau ruled by the Nouveau Head, born from the NLF. The organization under the new rule was essential for the continuation of the war.

In 208x, as the Reconquest advanced, Nouveau Head took control of now safe industries, power plants and valuable land and raw materials. With these resources at the government's disposal, prosperity began to return to the liberated country. Nouveau Head opted for an authoritarian approach which was widely accepted due to success of the Reconquest in bringing safety and economical growth.

In 210x, the Reconquest came to a halt as the NLF was not able to advance any more. More than 70% of main land Japan was liberated, of the remaining skerries, a few had government support, but most remained isolated. Moreover, a few islands and Hokkaido statuses were still unknown.

At the same time, a few rebel groups appeared, taking a position against the authoritarianism of Nouveau's Head. These groups opted to avoid direct conflict, creating freedom havens hidden away from the government.

In 211x, mutant beings with magical powers, known as deviants, started appearing all over the country. This prompted the Nouveau Head to officially stop the Reconquest and reorganize the NLF as the National special Unit of Magic-related Operations (NUMO), responsible for protecting the people from magical menaces.

Inside the NUMO, two agents quickly climbed the ranks and become the top operatives under the forces. Raikubo Haruka (雷久保 日花) and Yukiya Kazuki (雪矢 神月) are partners known for their efficiency, fighting prowess and care for the people. Inside the organization, they are known by a codename:
